Ren, I received the following information from a correspondent who stated that descendants of Elizabeth Neville and Francis Hampton went to Holmes Co., MS where my Nevels/Nevill families lived. The correspondent is a Hampton descendant. I am not sure if this information answers your question, but there is a reference to a book that might give you some answers. Jan _____________________ >>As you probably know, the Hampton line goes back several generations in the US and back as far as the 1500's in Great Britain. What I have is from a relative who found a book on the Hampton's while she was doing research and vacationing in South Carolina. Up to this point we only knew that William was connected to the line but not sure how. William, by the way, is my ggg-grandfather. Well, here goes.... The Reverend Thomas Hampton II is the first, born 1623. (He was the son of a William and Joane Hampton) i.Thomas Jr. b.1654 d.1703 married to Elizabeth Bridle. Thomas and Elizabeth i.Francis Hampton b.1690 d. 1747 married Elizabeth Neville (no dates) Francis and Elizabeth i.John Hampton d.1790 married Lydia John and Lydia i.William Hampton b.24 Dec 1782 Newberry, SC d.11 July 1845 Emory, MS. married Sarah Wilson Tucker b.1796 Newberry, SC d. 29 June 1877. William and Sarah i.Herbert Tucker Hampton b.22 Feb 1813 d.24 Dec 1889 married Mary Ann Finch b.22 May 1817 d.29 July 1883. Herbert and Mary i.Sarah Davis Hampton b.13 Jan 1857 d.18 Apr 1923 married William Starke Melton b.5 Mar 1847 d.3 Feb 1905. William and Sarah owned a good bit of land and some slaves. The Emory Methodist Church founded 1841 is built on the Academy lot originally owned by the Hamptons. I believe that these people came in from South Carolina. The lines you have in Mississippi are very early so I think that your people probably came up from the lower part of the state probably by river. This was common for some of the wealthier settlers. In Holmes county my folks are mostly in the North Eastern part (T16N R3E) although they owned land in Yazoo, Carroll, Attala and other counties. Sorry I don't have more dates on the Neville line but maybe there is a lead for you somewhere in this. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Thanks ..... Benny >>Jan, the name of the book is "The Venturers, The Hampton, Harrison, and Earle Families of VA, SC, and TX" by Virginia G. Meynard. The passage I have a copy of goes like this... Francis Hampton b. 1690 d.Dec 1747 Isle of Wight Co. VA. He was married to Elizabeth Neville and they had 6 children. In 1747 he deeded his possessions to his 3rd son Benjamin, other children had moved to Frederick Co., VA. Other children were John, Martha, Mary, Thomas and Benjamin. _____________________ At 02:31 PM 7/27/97 -0700, you wrote: >Hi group......."reportedly" John Neville b: 1661 who married Elizabeth >Bohannan, had a daughter Elizabeth who I show married to Joseph Bohannan >and Thomas Faulkner.
