Bob, Jan, Shirley, others, I believe that the Goodman who was born in 1783 (son of Jesse and Elizabeth Parks) was too young to be the father of Stephen (b. ca 1798) and Gideon (b. ca 1793). There was another Goodman, son of a Thomas. Halifax County, N.C. Deed Book 17, page 24. April 3, 1788: Thomas Neville to Goodman Neville for natural love and affection he hath and does bear to his son Goodman Nevill & heirs of his body lawfully begotten , & if he die without such issue to my son John Neville - - grants tract of 140 acres land in Halifax County, etc. Index to N.C. Wills 1665 -1900, lists Goodman Nevill, 1837, Will Book 4, page 154, Halifax County. Another reference from Records of Estates, Halifax County, N.C., by David B. Gammon: Nevill, Goodman. The widow, Nancy Nevill entered her dissent to the will of the dec'd Aug 1837. Inventory Nov 28, 1837 by Reddin Nevill, exr. Year's provisions allotted to the widow, Nov. 17, 1837. Account of sale Dec 22, 1837. Also, I found reference to marriage of a Stephen Nevill & Mary Peebles, 28 Mar 1820 in Halifax County, N.C. Jesse Burt, bm. I hope that some of this is helpful.
