A few weeks back I remember reading about a website <http://leo.vsla.edu> which had frustrated the efforts of one of the listmembers. My brouser IS Java enabled so I tried myself and got a pleasant surprise. Most of these Neville individuals are not new, but, for anyone interested, I deduce that copies of these wills can be obtained from microfilms on repository at the Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA. And there is much more there... NAME Nevill, Grace. DATE 1706. [Will probated 24 Sept. 1706] SOURCE Deeds, Orders, Wills, etc., 13, 1706-1710 (Reel 6) p. 6. Will pro. 24 Sept. 1706. p. 9. If you've read this far, the strangest one of them all comes from a different section of the Electronic Library (Unlike the ones above, these files are only viewable as G4 TIFF picture files, and I am reminded of the prohibition against sending attachments to the list) This is, then, my rendering: SUBJECT VIGINIA COLONIAL RECORDS PROJECT DOCUMENT 04778 SURVEY REP'T 5009 DEPOSITORY Principal Probate Registry CLASS Will - Register Books 247 PYNE TITLE Will of John Nevell DATES 1697 REFERENCES Probate Act Book 1697, 205. EXAMINED 9 May 1961 EXPOSURES 1 This entry is on the fourth folio, verso, of 247 PYNE. Will of John Nevell, bound on a voyage to the Straits. To his wife and two daughters his whole estate: one third to his wife Mary Nevell, one third to his daughter Mary Nevell, and one third to his daughter Elizabeth Nevell, paying £50 apiece to his sisters Elizabeth Nevell and Martha Carpender. (thus the text; the relation of the bequests is not clarified.) Signed 2 November 1696. Witness Jno Sabbartory, Stephen Thexer, Hannah Finnch. Probate 2 November 1697 to Mary Nevell, relict of Vice Admiral John Nevell, late of the parish of St Margaret, Westminster, Co. Mdx., but deceased in Virginia. - "buried St. Johns church Hampton VA." Granted, it would appear that this John had no sons. But the whole entry intrigues me. 1/ I am looking for a "Sir Thomas Neville" on the eastern seaboard about this time and here we have John, a Vice-Admiral. 2/ For about an hour I thought we had a Virginia - Maryland connection (which many of you are looking for). After all, St Margarets, Westminster IS in Maryland (and for those who don't believe me, the hamlet of Westminster, MD, was renamed or superceded, at least, by the village of Cape St. Claire). To the best of my cursory research this MD county was always Anne Arundel (across the bay from West Chester!) but NOT Middlesex Co. so I am forced to suppose that we are talking about St Margaret's, the church parish associated (still today) with Westminster Abbey in West London, England (now Greater London but then Middlesex County). Since this is my first post to this list (although I have read all of yours back through 1997) I'm another part of Paddy Chitty's Ontario puzzle. Where she's looking for the ancestors of Moses, I'm looking for the ancestors of James & Eve. Her search has taken her to Cecil Co. MD and New Rochelle NY, mine to the Nansemond VA > Halifax/Orange Co. NC Nevilles (We're probably NOT connected, although our ancestral cousins only lived a few farms apart up here...).
