I am pasting what I have of the correspondence. Jan ------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 21:26:21 -0500 From: "Howe Jim, MT3310G" <[email protected]> <[email protected]> Subject: James Nevill of Indiana ca 1835 I am researching the line of James Nevill, born March 9, 1796, in Kentucky (reputedly, Barren County, Kentucky). Neville was married to Margret, maiden name unknown, who was born Oct. xx, 1797, in either Virginia or Kentucky. Marriage date unknown. Had at least four children: William, born 1824-25, Ky.; Stewart, born July 7, 1832, Ky.; Benjamin Franklin, Oct. 16, 1834, Ky.; and Larminda, born Nov. 30, 1836, Indiana. Nevill emigrated to Bartholomew County, Indiana, in approximately 1835. Family tradition claims he came from Barren County, Kentucky.I have not been able to prove this. Family stayed in Bartholomew County and remains to this day. I have not been able to find James' parents. Any help would be appreciated. Jim Howe [email protected] ----------------------------- To: [email protected] Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 08:37:24 -0500 Subject: Re: James Nevill of Indiana ca 1835 Jim, I have a lot of information on the Barren Co., KY Nevilles, but can't place your James there. What records have you found on this family? Where did you get the exact birth dates? Do you have this family on the 1840 and 1850 census in Indiana? I didn't see any James in Bartholomew Co. on the 1840 IN census index. Was he the man on the 1840 Johnson Co., IN census? The two counties are adjoining. Shirley ------------------------- Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 22:19:02 -0500 From: "Howe Jim, MT3310G" <[email protected]> <[email protected]> Subject: Re: James Nevill of Indiana Shirley: Regarding James Nevill of Bartholomew County, Indiana...you are correct, he was in neighboring Johnson County in 1840 for the census. In actuality, the border between the two counties varied until around 1900; James never moved but his county of residence did! There are very few records. His birthdate (3/9/1796) and deathdate (6/11/1865) come from his tombstone as does wife Margret (b: 10/?/1797 d: 6/14/1863). He left no will in either Bartholomew or Johnson County. Two land grants in Bartholomew County exist: one in his name, dated 1849, and another in a different name that apparently passed to him when the land was purchased from that individual. Land purchases and birth of daughter indicate move from Kentucky occurred 1835. Daughter Larminda was born in November 1836 in Bartholomew County. No county of birth has been found for previous children; only state of Kentucky. There is no indication James served in military (no pension applications or records), although he would have been age 16 in 1812 (War of 1812). Records indicate a James Nevil DID serve in 1812 and 1814/1815 in that war with Kentucky militia. I don't know if that was my James or not; the Nevilles of Barren County had military connections so it might have been James (married to Phebe Renick) instead of Indiana's James. Family tradition (heard by grandfather, still alive today at age 92) always said family came from Barren County. No marriage record there for a James Nevill and Margret (though records there were disorganized when I visited). Any ideas? Jim Howe [email protected] ---------------------------- Fri, 30 Jan 1998 13:06:45 -0800 (PST) To: [email protected] From: [email protected] (Shirley L Wilcox) Jim, you haven't said what, if any Barren Co., KY records you have checked nor what Johnson & Bartholomew County records. Have you figured out any possible associations with other families? People often moved in groups or followed each other. Are there any names that continue to pop up being a deed witness, living nearby on the census, etc. Sometimes you have to study whole neighborhoods. Did any of the children marry someone from KY that might have been a child of an aquaintance or fellow traveler of the parents? Have you tracked all of the children on the census? Sometimes an elderly relative will be found living in one of the households that gives a clue for another surname that can be searched. Are you tracking all the children? Have you found death dates for them? Some IN counties have death records that go back to the 1880s. Perhaps a death record or an obituary for one of the children of James will give the names of parents. What were the age categories on the 1840 census? Were there other children born between William & Stewart? Developing a profile of the family will help you in identifying a family on the 1830 census of KY that might be a match. One thing that VA & KY have are yearly tax records for everyone, not just those who owned land. If he was in Barren Co., the tax records would show James up through 1834 or 35 and then he should disappear. If he owned land in KY he probably sold it shortly before moving. What record did you find for a James serving in the KY Militia during the War of 1812? If it was Capt. Job Glover's Co., KY Militia, that James was the one who married Phebe Renick according to pension records. Shirley
