    3. Paul, Welcome to the list and thank you for the great post! I guess you know Paddy's friend Carmen Matterson, another descendant of James and Eve DeShired Nevills. Carmen says that James was probably James Thomas Nevills or Thomas James Nevills. Has your research led you to the same conclusion? Have you ever considered James Nevill who served in Washington Co., PA during the Rev. War as a possibility for your James? Philip Nevill served in the same county, and may be the same Philip Nevill who is found in MD Rev. War records. In the 1790s a Philip Nevill appeared in the Spanish Natchez Territory records (present day Mississippi in the area along the MS River around Natchez. James Nevill appears in one record of property with which Philip is also associated. Since Philip's daughter Mary (Polly) Nevill McFall Ashley stated that she was born in MD, I think the Philip Nevill in MS is the same as the one found in PA and MD records in the Rev. War. Some of those who went to Natchez were looking for land and others were disaffected with the outcome of the Revolutionary War. James disappeared from the records after a 1790's reference to his land on Bayou Pierre. Later the land was bought by William Mackey, but Philip was given as the owner, not James. So far, no record of transfer of the land has turned up (much information may still be in the Spanish Archives in Madrid or the Cuban archives). I have no idea what the relationship between Philip and James might be. I think it is possible Philip was an indentured servant who came to MD shortly before the war (have a reference to a Philip Nevil who left London for MD in early 1770s), and who may have joined the patriots' cause to escape indenture. James is a puzzle. We don't know if he died shortly after coming to Natchez or got there and didn't like the climate and went somewhere else. Philip named his son Thomas, which could be a family name on his side of the family. I have posted records which back up the above information and will be glad to do so again, but I just wanted to see what you thought about James Nevill who was in the Washington Co., PA Rev. War records. One other little tantalizing detail: according to a group sheet from a Philip Nevill descendant, one of Philip's daughters, Nelly Nevill Travillion, named a son Philip Bass or Barnes Nevill. Paddy has pointed out that the Barnes surname is linked with her Nevills. Several Barneses are buried in the same cemetery as the Nevills in Harford Co., MD where Paddy's Nevills lived.
