He appears on the personal property tax lists for the first time in 1787, which allows us to make a birth estimation. I suggest those interested in him take a look at the Amherst County deeds. The early ones were transcribed & published by Rev. Bailey Fulton Davis in The Deeds of Amherst County, Virginia 1751-1807 and Albemarle County Virginia 1748-1763. This James is likely the man for whom an administration bond was issued 27 November 1832, Nelson Co., VA to Lafayette Nevil who would have been his nephew (Nelson Co. Wills D:203).
