Just some speculation on the Yelverton/Yelvaton name confusion: I have only recently been looking into the VA Nevilles with more than passive interest. I recently read the volumes by Gertrude E. Gray, "Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants." Found them in Santa Clara, CA. of all places. Visiting the newest grandson. Nice library there. One entry in Vol. II, page 110 caught my eye. This would be in the original Grant Book I, Page 352 if I read my scribbles correctly: ----------------------- Mr. Yelverton Payton of Stafford County, 270 acres on Broad Run in Fauquier County. Surv. John Moffert, adj. heir or heirs of Nathaniel Chapman Dec'd, Solomon Jones, William Grant, William Downing, land of Jones taken up by Capt. Neavill, on Mother Leather Coat Mountain. 22 July 1779. ----------------------- This is the first time I have seen both the names Payton and Neavill in a single entry. I do not know which Neavil is the Capt. here nor do I know the territory around MLC Mt. Also, when did the Paytons move into the area and from where? But, If the families were together in 1762, at the time of Yelverton's birth, could Dad William Nevill have named his son after his Payton friend? Has anyone seen the original record and is it spelled Yelverton or Yelvaton Payton? BTW, I have gone back to Yelverton again. Best, Tom
Tom, just wondering if you found out anything else on Yelverton. Do you have a list of his children and what happened to them?
