Reese, Ruth Nevels and I have done some research on the Granville Co. families in an effort to find the father of a James and Martin Nevill / Nevels who first appeared in Jefferson Co., Mississppi Territory in the 1790s. They were born ca. 1770s. We have not found a link yet. I compiled our data on John Nevill a few years ago and posted it on the Neville List. If you use the search engine for past years in the Neville-L archives, you will find the data. If you don't, let me know, and I will put my files on this computer and forward them to you. Most of my information came from print sources, so you may already have what I have. When my husband and I were on a trip a couple of years ago, we stopped at the library in Granville Co., but did not turn up anything that would link the Granville Co. Nevills with Nevills in other southern states or Mississippi. I will see what I have in that file that might help you, if you are interested. One of our reasons for looking at the John Nevill you are researching is because he would have been of the right generation to be the father of our Mississippi ancestors, Martin and James. Another reason is because we found a passport giving the man we believe is our James Nevill/Nevels permission to travel on the Holston River into Tennessee. On the same flatboat with him are Francis Jones, William Huff, Rector, and Humphrey Beardin. The Holston was the first step on the river journey to Mississippi (Holston R. > Tenn. R. > Ohio R. > Mississippi R.). A few months later James Nevill and Humphrey Beardin are found together on a Mississippi oath of alligence. I have found the name Humphrey Beardin in the Granville Co./ Halifax Co., NC area. For these reasons, we continue to be interested in the Granville Co. Nevilles. Ruth and I have also researched the other Nevilles in Granville, Halifax, and Orange Co. but have not found a link with any of those families and your John Nevill, although there is almost surely a family connection. When I was in college about 40 years ago, I dated Terry Estes of Springfield, Tennesse, whose father was Tom Estes. His family may be related to yours. His Estes grandfather was interested in my Nevels surname. He knew of some Nevels connection with his family and told me about some Nevels living in the area around Robertson Co. (not sure he meant the same county). Unfortunately, I can't remember any details of what he told about the Nevels and Estes families. Would he have been referring to your family?
