RE: Descendants of John Neville, passenger on the "Ark" or the "Dove" ( I forgot which) I received a letter today along with some information on who is eligible for membership in the Ark and Dove Society. Membership is open, and new members are invited to join! The "Society" uses for their membership qualifications, the following:"Neville authorities": 1. Mrs. John Hart Wilson. "The Neville Family of England and the United States". Typescript (1964) at MHS (I assume this means Maryland Historical Society) 2. Robert Fleming Neville Jr. "Neville Family of Maryland and Virginia", Mobile Alabama, 22 June 1937. This Typescript was enclosed with their application #353. 3. Joseph Berry Neville "A 360 Year History of One Neville Family", manuscript at MHS. 4. William Fletcher Boogher. "Neville Family of Maryland and Virginia", typescript on file at The Society of the Ark and The Dove. 5. Blanche Adams Chapman. Wills and Administrations of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1647-1800. GPC. 6. BlancheAdams Chapman "Marriages of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1628-1800. GPC. 7. Maurice Neville Blakemore. The Blakemore Family and Allied Lines. Richmond: no pub., 1963. The Society recognizes those who descend from the following descendants of John Neville for membership. 1. James Neville b. c 1640 2. Ellen Neville b. 1642, spouse of John Lambert 3. John Neville b. 1647 4. William Neville 5. and Rachel Neville who married Michael Ashford. The Society uses and quotes the Boogher genealogy report basically word for word for qualifications. When I wrote to the Society I questioned those descending from James Neville as James was not named in his reported fathers will nor has any proof been offered that James Neville was a son of John Neville and Bridget Thorsley. To that question, I was advised that the informational package should clarify my question. Unfortunately the "Society" did not offer any proof for James Neville being the son of John and are very happy to accept membership applications from his descendants. The "Society" has the Boogher report down through the fifth generation and basically endorses those ancestors addressed by Boogher and Joe Neville. I will go through the information furnished me and make any additional notes to my file on World connect or if something new jumps out, post it to the List. Meanwhile should any of you descend from John Neville and his three "Society" recognized wives, Bridget Thorsley, Ann (who ever she is) and Johanna Porter, and wish to join the "Society" please write to: Mrs. Matthew S. Take care.....Ren PS....I don't think I am aware of the 1937 Robert Fleming Neville Jr. report attached to application 353. If this is a new one for you also, let me know and I'll see if I can get a copy and reproduce it for those interested........ -- ======================================================================== Ren and Judy Neville 925-516-4976 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field..... shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30 "My fathers badge, old Nevil's crest, the rampant bear chain'd to the ragged staff" Henry VI, part 2, verse 1........William Shakespeare http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=johnneville Ne vile velis "Form no mean wish"
Ren, Thanks for checking into the Ark and Dove Society. Glad you got a good response. We all know some of the earlier generations are a little bit shaky, but they haven't been proven wrong. The Robert Fleming Neville Jr. manuscript called "Neville Family of Maryland and Virginia," Mobile Alabama, 22 June 1937, is new to me. I'd be interested in a copy if anyone is able to obtain one. --Glenn Gohr archives_guy@hotmail.com
I would be interested in joining the Ark and Dove Society. Would love to have a copy of the 1937 transcript. Should I go through Mrs. Atkinson for it?
