    1. [NEVILLE-L] John of Isle of Wight Co, VA
    2. Shirley L Wilcox
    3. I have made only a superficial study of the Isle of Wight Nevilles using published sources, but from that I believe that some of the material that has made its way to the Ark & Dove Society is incorrect. People with the same first names have been rolled into one person. Instead of saying that John Neville married Elizabeth Reynolds ca 1689, they should say this couple was married PRIOR TO 1689. The reference is to a 1689 deed that indicates this couple was married PRIOR to that date. In fact they had been married quite some time as their daughter Martha was also married PRIOR to 1689. Blanch Adams Chapman, Isle of Wight Co., Marriages 1728-1800 (1933) p38 JOHN NEVILL & Elizabeth Reynolds, sister of Richard Reynolds, 1689. D.B.I. p25 p3 Benjamin Beale Jr & MARTHA NEVILLE, daughter of JOHN NEVILLE, 1689. D.B.I. p23 There are several deeds in the 1660s that show John & Elizabeth were already a couple. The earliest deed with them both mentioned is dated 1664. John had land as early as 1663 in Nansemond Co. As a rough estimate of dates, if John was 21 in 1664 (as we know he was married by then), he would have been born ca 1643. John Bennett Boddie, Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight County Virginia (Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1993 reprint) p541 JOHN NEVILLE of Nansemond & wife ELIZABETH sell to Arthur Skinner 125A in Isle of Wight formerly granted to JOHN NEVILL. 16 May 1665. (Will & Deed Book I) JOHN NEVILL of Nansemond, planter, and ELIZABETH his wife, sell to John Marshall of Isle of Wight, for 1000 pounds tobacco, 400A granted 6 March to Henry Bradley & Bradley sold to NEVILL, 2 Feb 1663. Rec. in Nansemond, John Lear, Clerk. Rec. in I of W., Jno Jennings, Clerk. Teste, Arthur Skinner, Wm Burgh. (Will & Deed Book I) p586 JOHN NEVIL of Nansemond, planter & ELIZABETH his wife, sell to John Marshall of I of W for 100 pounds tobacco, 250A in Nansemond Co, adj Nansemond River, part of 450A granted by Gov. Berkeley, 6 March 1662 & sold by him to JOHN NEVILL, 2 Feb. 1663, in Nansemond. John Marshall for love & aff. for his son Robert Marshall grants him land purchased from JOHN NEVILL 25 Jan 1664. Dated 6 Jly 1680. I don't know when this John Neville died. At the time of 1704 rent roll there is just one John Neville in Isle of Wight Co. My guess is that the older John had died and that the man on the 1704 rent roll is his son John Neville Jr. It was probably this younger John whose Isle of Wight will was probated 27 July 1730. 3. Hello List- With all of the new books recently mentioned I am hoping someone will come across a listing for my SUSAN J. NEVILLE who was born 1820 Virginia. She is my brick wall. I don't know where in Virginia she was born, nor who her parents are. She first appears in 1850 in Vermillion County, Illinois married to Benjamin Warren Madden with 4 children. I don't know where she and Benjamin were married. The oldest child was born in Indiana, and the rest in Illinois. Her husband was born and raised in Ohio. Any help on this would be so greatly appreciated !! Libby Stone

    3. Dear Tom & Jean: Thought you would like to know, I go into the hospital on Monday, the 4th to have a mass removed from my colon. A recent colonoscopy showed a mass which so far, after the biospy, indicated that it was precancerous; However, the doctor said they would not know for sure until after they removed it. In addition, my primary care doctor called tonight and said, after reading the radiologist report, he thought that there might be a mass in the bladder area. We hope that there is only one mass; however, we also hope that it has not matastized. The surgeon said he saw no indication that the mass had grown outside the colon. Good news and bad news. Keep the Neville stuff coming. 3. I have read the information furnished by the Society on the ancestors of John Neville. There is, as expected, a lot of conflicting information in their files as they accepted the word of those before us as gospel. There are a couple of incidents that I am having a problem with. Either my file is really out of whack or this is information, right or wrong that I have never seen before. One example: Unplaced "John Nevill married in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, c 1689, Elizabeth, sister of Richard Reynolds (F:34, cites deed Book 1:25) John Nevill died in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, leaving a will dated 30 Sep 1726, proved 27 July 1730. He named his legal daughter Penelope, and daughters Elizabeth, Martha, Florence, Mary, Patience, Sarah and Ann. His wife and son John were executors. John Marshall, Mich'l Murfrey, and John Garrey were witnesses. (E:109 cities Will Book III, p. 213" In my file I show the children of John Neville and Elizabeth Reynolds as Martha, Benjamin and John. Under son John, I show him married to Elizabeth Sikes with the above mentioned children. I do not have the references quoted and am wondering if my file (and perhaps yours) are not correct or perhaps the reason this reference is unplaced is because they have it upside down.........corrections/comments appreciated -- ======================================================================== Ren and Judy Neville 925-516-4976 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field..... shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30 "My fathers badge, old Nevil's crest, the rampant bear chain'd to the ragged staff" Henry VI, part 2, verse 1........William Shakespeare http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=johnneville Ne vile velis "Form no mean wish"
