Randy: Thanks for the information. I totally understand the frustration of trying to deal with multiple given names repeated in a line. I also understand that your research is a work in progress like most of mine. When you get yours to the point where you can share a tree structure, please let me know. I'm focused on the Holt side of the children named in Jesse Neville's will and would be very much interested in any information on their descendants/locations. Thanks. RE: Joseph Neville d. 3-4-1819, will dated 9-4-1817.... Darn......got about 75% of Joe's will in my notes then this darn machine decided to exit for dinner and for some reason what I had typed went with it. It's fun to try and figure out what else I lost, but in my case, I don't need your help, I can answer that one myself. I'm wondering if one of you has his will in your computer and can cut-paste and send it to me thus alleviating the agony of having to to figure out which slave went to whom....thank you Ren Neville (beschutzer@earthlink.net) -- ======================================================================== Ren and Judy Neville 925-516-4976 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field..... shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30 "My fathers badge, old Nevil's crest, the rampant bear chain'd to the ragged staff" Henry VI, part 2, verse 1........William Shakespeare http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=johnneville Ne vile velis "Form no mean wish"
Sue, We are having a problem with connecting to the North Carolina Nevill Families. The Holts that are descended from one of these Holt Families married after 1920, I don't have the exact date. I don't know exactly where they are on this now. The Nevill, I am descended from is Nicholas Thomas Nevill he was born about 1823 in Alabama. His father is Dodson Nevill b. 1790, possibly in North Carolina. Living with him in 1840 is Richard Nevill b. 1803 North Carolina & his wife Sarah b. 1803 N. C. Richard & Dodson are in Madison County TN in 1840. Dodson is in Lincoln County, TN in 1830. In the adjoining county is Benjamin, Pleasant and some other Nevills, none are closely related but are from North Carolina. 1850 Madison County, TN =Zachariah Nevill b. 1825 his wife, Eliza b. 1826 NC, Lydia b. 1842 NC, Cuzzy M. b.1844 NC, Griffin T. b. 1848 TN, Jane Statum b. 1829 NC, James Statum b.1849 TN, Lydia Nevill b. 1775 NC are in the home of Zachariah Nevill in 1850 Madison County. They are living next to Richard Nevill in 1850 Madison County. Regards, Randy Lee Nevill -----Original Message----- From: Randy L. Our work on Zachariah Nevill/Ezakiah Holt is cross checked by separate documents. This is part of the Madison County Nevill Family that I am descended from. We are still working on the Alabama Nevill Families at present, which is still a problem. I will have more on Zachariah by the end of the week. I believe he is living near Benjamin Nevill in 1840 North Carolina, know as Hezekiah Holt. I feel Lydia Nevill is living with Benjamin Nevill at this time. She is with Zachariah Nevill in 1850 Madison County TN. The Holts I will resume this fall. These families are related and close friends, I am not sure of any illegitimate children. Orphans have always been taken in by my family, the last during the great depression. I just sent the 1880 census of my John Nevill to some other family, he has a number in his house hold and none are his children. Regards, Randy L. Nevill -----Original Message----- From: Sue Thompson [mailto:sthomps61@alltel.net] Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2002 8:31 AM To: NEVILLE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NEVILLE-L] Jesse Nevill,Tempty Neville Holt, Temperance Holt Randy: Just input. While Dr. Mann's manuscript does say that Temperance Holt married her cousin, Jesse A. Holt, this information is not true and he identifies his error later on. When he did his research he didn't have the information on James Holt (son of Thomas and Ann Arrington Holt) and didn't know that James was already in Tennessee with his son, Jesse A. Holt or that Jesse A. Holt was already married to Elizabeth Davis and in Tennessee when Temperance's children were being born. Boddie used Dr. Mann's information in his genealogy sketch of the Holts but this information is wrong. No one really knows who the father of Temperance Holt's children were before she married Joseph Parker. Again, it is possible that Temperance Holt's children were illegitimate children of a Neville. If so, whoever wrote the entry in the Bible record could have been attempting to cover this fact up. That's one reason I was so excited to see your Temperance Neville Holt as being the daughter of Jesse Neville and married to Thomas Holt. If this marriage is between the Thomas Holt who was born circa 1780, son of Thomas Holt and Elizabeth Smith and Temperance Neville, born circa 1782, daughter of Jesse Neville, then this Thomas and Temperance Neville Holt might be the parents of the Ezeckiah Holt/Zachariah Nevill but then, who is Hezekiah Holt, the son of Polly Holt? As to Helen Tice's statement: "*I know nothing about Hiram Holt, but I have no reason to think he could have been a sibling of Adam N Holt et al. Could he have been a son of William Holt and Polly Brinkley Holt?" Hiram Holt was probably the first son of Temperance Holt. As stated in my last email, he shared in the division of the property left to Temperance's children after her death. He was not the son of William Holt and Polly Brinkley Holt. He was named in a deed with Hilliard Holt and with Thomas Neville as a trustee. The only other Holt unit he could have been from would be Mary (Polly) Holt or Harvey Holt. Since he is named with Temperance's other children in two documents in court records, it suggests he was Temperance's son. <smile> I really need to see an actual outline of your family tree to determine the family units. The Holt and Neville families named their children identically so often that without it, I can't identify the different individuals. All of the family did not live in the same immediate area. In fact, three of Thomas and Ann Arrington Holt's children moved out of Halifax County and out of NC. My Hiram did not live in the Heathsville/Brinkleyville area and neither did Adam N. Holt from what I can see posted. Because someone is not mentioned in a will is not an indication that the individual wasn't a part of the family unit. They could have already received a share of the estate or it might have been intentional that they not receive anything. Sue Thompson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Randy L. Sue, On the old census prior to 1850, individuals are difficult to figure out. This is the problem we are having with North Carolina and common names to different families. The McNeill family below use the McNeel & McNeil spelling in later records. 8 Catherine A. Parsons W F Feb. 22, 1858 Horshoe Dropsy of Chest 49y, 7m, 29d John & M. Neville Hardy Co. This Catherine Parsons (w/o James William Parsons) was a daughter of John Neville, s/o Gen. Joseph of Hardy co. Va. She was born 1809, and died Feb.22, 1858 in Randolph co. now Horshoe Run, Tucker co. WVa. (this excerpt is from the" History of Tucker co." by Fansler. John also had a daughter Mary Neville who married a Parsons, and a daughter Agnes "Nancy" Neville who also married a Parsons. They lived in Randolph co. Va. now Tucker co. WVa. Here is an excerpt from Gen. Joseph Neville's will of 1819 Hardy co........ To my grandaughter Mary Neville, I give one negro Gairl of the Name of Jane, her and her increase, if any to the said Mary Neville and the heirs of her body, if no such heirs to descend to her sisters or their representatives - To my Granddaughter Nancy Parsons, I give one Negro Garil named Violet on the same conditions as the one given to my Grandaughter Mary Neville above. Are these granddaughters that Joseph gave slaves to daughters of John Neville son of Joseph? He had daughters Mary and Nancy. He also had a daughter Catherine who would have been only 10 yrs. old at the time of the will. I also saw on the internet that Mary Neville did not mary Jonathan Parsons until Dec.18, 1829, if that is true then she would have still been Mary Neville at the time the will was read. Also, I saw that Agnes "Nancy" Neville married Feb. 27, 1816, if that is the case then she would have been Nancy Parsons at the will reading. Catherine Neville would have been too young. My Elizabeth who I believe to be a daughter of John Neville would be 28 at the time and married to her second husband . She was left out of this will it would seem. The will was written in and witnessed by Elizabeth's husband David Gilmore on Sept. 4, 1817, the day that Elizabeth and David married in Hardy co.. I wonder if they may have gotten a wedding present in lieu of the will, just a th! ought!!!
Sue, We found a number of errors in what I sent you. Sue, It will be a couple of months before we are working on the Holt family again, the Holts are first cousins of my Dad's. I have a cousin on this side that is now on vacation and I will not pursue the Holts until she returns. Briefly, this is what I have seen. I need to digest your information and would appreciate your input to the following: 1 - Who was the father of the Thomas Holt who you think married Temperance Neville? Am I correct that you think that the Tempy Holt named in Jesse Neville's will is Temperance Neville Holt, daughter of Jesse Neville? 2 - Could I please see a family outline of your Neville/Holt family units for the individuals discussed below? It would help me identify the relationships you believe existed. We seem to be researching the same family lines. Sue Thompson sthomps61@alltel.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Randy L. Randy: Just input. Randy: Thanks for the follow-up. Sue, We have worked on this for some time. We feel that Tempty and Temperance are two different people. Also it looks like Ezeckiah Holt and Zachariah Nevill are the same person. He was Ezakiah Holt in North Carolina 1840 and Zachariah Nevill in TN 1850. He is the son of Tempty Nevill Holt, if we are correct, Grandson of Jesse Nevill. Below is some information from various e-mails, and documents. Randy *Jesse Nevill's Will bequeathed a named parcel of land to Mary Holt's children and another named parcel to Temperance Holt's children. The will does not name the children *Two extant documents (a bond and appointment of successor guardian and an inventory) name five "orphans' of Jesse Nevill, viz. Adam, Joab, Malinda (or Malinder), Ezakiah, and Eagley( or Eaglet). One document uses the surname "Nevill" and the other uses "Holt" when naming the beneficiaries. Neither says what property came into the guardianship originally. The original guardian was Harvey Holt, brother of Mary(Polly) and Temperance Holt, daughters of Joseph Holt. The successor guardian was Thomas Nevill. * To date I have not ascertained exactly what property was in the guardianship which benefited the Nevill/ Holt children. Thus we cannot tell whether those named were children of Mary, Temperance or both, by comparing such to the named property designated for each set of children by Jesse N. in his will. *There is apparently a court record in 1822 or 1823 which refers to Mary Holt's children without naming them. *Mary(Polly) Holt's Will left her estate to her daughter, Eaglet( Eagley). However, the surviving children of H.N. Holt ( Hezekiah, Ezakiah, or Bis) shared in the disposition of Polly's estate. If Adam was , in fact, a son of Mary(Polly) Holt, why did his three surviving daughters not also share in the division of the land ? *There is some triple hearsay information, obtained by a granddaughter (Annie Bledsoe Bain) of Adam N. Holt from Mr. E.C. Shearin of Enfield, that Adam and Bis Holt were brothers and were sons of Polly Holt. How Mr. Shearin knew what he apparently told "Cousin Annie", I have no idea. *Dr. William Mann told me that he has an original Bible record that indicates that Temperance Holt married : 1. Jesse Holt and 2. Joseph Parker *In the 1840 Census, Adam N. Holt and his family and slaves are shown on his property near Enfield. Mary (Polly) Holt is shown on the next property and H.N. Holt appears in the same vicinity with his family and slaves. *The daughters of Adam Holt and Annis Smith Holt were Victoria C. , Julia, and Donna. Helen Tice's information re Victoria and Julia's husbands should be reversed. Victoria C. married George W. Heptinstall, a Methodist minister. Julia married Samuel Young *William Holt and Polly Brinkley Holt were not the parents of Adam N. Holt and his siblings. Of this, I believe we can be certain. *I know nothing about Hiram Holt, but I have no reason to think he could have been a sibling of Adam N Holt et al. Could he have been a son of William Holt and Polly Brinkley Holt? * The petition posted by Helen Tice does not say that W.H., Hiram and Ann Marie Holt were children of Mary(Polly) Holt, daughter of Joseph Holt. We need to know whose land was being divided to make any sense of the petition. We do know that Eaglet Holt was named by Mary(Polly) Holt in her Will as her daughter. Thus Eaglet should have shared in any division to benefit children of Mary, daughter of Joseph Holt. Eaglet was not named in the petition You may be interested to know that my mother, Julia Holt Mitchell Brown died last Dec.8 at age 98. *The Sarah Neville that is supposed to have m. Benjamin Neville Jr. was the daughter of a Jesse Neville b.5 July, 1759 Fauquier County, VA. This Jesse had 4 children ;Sarah m Benjamin Neville ,Tempy m. Thomas Holt ,Jack and Jesse Jr. This information from his will in Halifax County, NC The will is # 952 page643 aug. Court 1819 Halifax County, NC Abstracts of wills 1758-1824 The Benjamin mentioned above. Note; this puts Benjamin and Jesse in the same family group. The Benjamin in 1840 maybe a brother of Jesse Nevill b. 1759, The Benjamin in 1840 was to old to have been his son. *Genealogical Abstracts of Wills / 1758 - 1824 / Halifax County, North Carolina by Margaret M. I believe Tempe Nevill was the daughter of Jesse Nevill and married Thomas Holt. After Tempe died her father Jesse must have been responsible for the children, because when he dies they are named as Jesses descendents and custody is given to Harvey Holt. Later Thomas Nevill Jr was appointed guardian. In Deed Book 33, Page 607: Halifax County, North Carolina We the undersigned commissioners in obedience to the HALIFAX COUNTY prefixed order of court to us directed to divide the lands belonging to the heirs of the late Polly Holt decd do report and say that Lot No. 1 was drawn by Archelaus Holt and Elizabeth Holt in right of A. N. Holt, decd, recorded according to the map above. Lot No. 2 was drawn by Eglet Holt as set forth by the map above and we do report and say that we have ?????? and equal number of acres of land and it is our opinion that it has been divided as equal in valuation. He married Annis Smith and they had 3 daughters. He died around 1847-48. I believe he belongs to the family descended from Thomas Holt who married Ann Arrington and moved to Halifax Co from Virginia around 1760, but I cannot find proof. He was apparently orphaned and was the ward of Jesse Neville. Any help would be appreciated. *In the 1840 Census, Adam N. Holt and his family and slaves are shown on his property near Enfield. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we explore this Benjamin III Nevill (ca 1742-1832) and wife Lucretia Smith. I believe this Benjamin was married twice, the last time to Sarah Nevill, the daughter of the mysterious Jesse Nevill above who had kids Tempe, Sarah, Jack and Jesse Jr. Benjamin III and Lucretia are the parents of Hardy Nevill (my Hardy Nevill, father of Osmond . this family ends up in Alabama .) This Eaglet Holt was b 1808 (see Eaglet Holt above b 1812). I believe this is the Eaglet that marries Elias G. Nevill, son of Thomas R Nevill and Sally Green. This Thomas R is another brother of Hardy and Elizabeth above, a son of Benjamin III Nevill and Lucretia Smith. I did have one other discovery . We know that Hardy and Rebecca had a son whose name we do not know. Their son Holcotts will names his brothers and sisters, and lists the children of an unnamed deceased brother as Rebecca C., Thomas F, William, Alice, Sallie, Dayton and Robert P. I was reviewing Hardys wife Rebeccas will, and in it she names each of her children that we already knew of, but she also leaves money to a Richard B. Previously I had thought this was her grandson, son of Osmond J, but I bet it is the name of the missing son. That would make another son for Hardy, a son named Richard B. This maybe the Richard B. Nevill in the Alabama, Census. This is a different Richard Nevill from the one In Madison, County. There is also another Zachariah Nevill in Alabama, whose descendents also move to Texas
The children of Temperance Holt remains a mystery on the Holt side as well. However, Temperance Holt was not the mother of Joab, Malinda and the others mentioned. Polly Holt, her sister, was the mother of these children. Temperance married Joseph Parker in May of 1822. Before she married, she had Joseph W. Holt, Hilliard Holt, Eaton Holt, Nancy Holt, Hilby Holt. She had James Harvey Parker with Joseph Parker. Our research is also suggesting that Temperance's first son was Hiram Holt. BC Holtzclaw did a genealogy on the Holt family but he has several mistakes in it. He says that Temperance Holt's first children were by Jesse A. Holt but this is inaccurate since Jesse A. Holt was already in Tennessee and married to Elizabeth Davis before Temperance's children were born. We don't know who the father of Temperance or Polly's children were. We suspect that they may have been illegitimate children fathered by a Neville but we aren't sure at this point. There is another document registered in the Feb Term of 1866 as follows: "On motion it is ordered by the Court that Andrew Gunter, Braswell Britt, Wright Willey & W.K Pittman be appointed commissioners to divide the lands described in the petition into equal parts or shares, and to allot to each of the petitioners J.W. Holt, Eaton Holt and James H. Parker one share. ???(couldn't read name) Parker and wife Nancy one share, and to W.H., Hiram and Ann Marie Holt (Wallace) one share, and if no division, to sell, etc." These five shares are all given to children of Temperance Holt: J. W. Holt, Eaton Holt, James H. Parker, Nancy Holt (who married a Parker) and the children of Hiram Holt (W. H., Hiram and Ann Marie Holt) who was deceased by the time this petition was submitted to the court. Unfortunately, the land's owner is not identified on this court order to divide. I'm in the processing now of trying to find the original petition and subsequent report to the court on this document on the microfilm as I'm sure it will shed some light on who the father of these children were (other than James H. Parker who we know was the son of Joseph Parker). Is it possible that Temperance Holt was a Neville who married into the Holt family? Is there anyone on the Neville list who can verify a marriage between a Temperance Neville and a Holt? or.. is there anyone on the Neville list who can confirm that the Holt children by Temperance and Polly Holt were illegitimate children of a Neville? Any input greatly appreciated. Sue Thompson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Randy L. Rebecca......to my knowledge, the line of Solomon Corbin Neville Jr., and General Joseph Neville are two separate lines (trees). Some think that Joseph Neville goes to the patriarch John Neville of the Ark and Dove variety while Solomon Corbin goes to the patriarch William b. 1615 in England that to my knowledge has not been linked with John and Bridget Thorsley. IF anyone has a link between these two lines, please share......(pretty please) otherwise I would have a problem with the Reay's of Hardy Co., ending up in a canoe ride in Montgomery Co., TN with those "other" Neville's :) Rebecca Lucas wrote: > Does anyone know about this Martha Cash Nevill, d/o Solomon Corbin Neville? > I am trying to learn more about the Reay family since Elizabeth Neville d/o > John Neville/Mary Hider b. 1765 son of Gen. I have done some research on Simon Neville but like you can not place his parents. Have you found a marriage date of Alexander Neville and Catherine Armstrong? Hi, If you are referring to John Christopher Neville and James T. Neville, sons of Robert Buckner Neville and Clarissa Jane Berry, I can prob. help although I do not show them as twins. Their father and his brother Joseph G. b. 1822 were twins, they also had brothers named John and James but their b-days would be before 1820. If you can be a little more specific I can prob. help. John C. and James T. lived in Ballard/Carlisle Co. KY. DC Browning >>> huthun@wavegate.com 07/12/02 08:47PM >>> This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. This post of Rebecca's doesn't seem to have made it to the Neville list. Rootsweb has had some of the lists down for restructuring. Possibly it fell through the cracks. I am resending it. --Glenn Gohr (List Manager) ----- Original Message ----- From: Rebecca Lucas To: NEVILLE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, July 13, 2002 10:24 PM Subject: Elizabeth Neville Reay Gilmore grave Hello again, I just came back from a trip to West Virginia where I located the grave of David Gilmore and Elizabeth Neville Reay Gilmore. ( I believe she was a granddaughter of Joseph Neville who died in Hardy co. Va. in 1819) They are buried at Israel United Methodist Church cemetery in Kerens, West Virginia. Their tombstone reads "Saviour Lead Me" David Gilmore - died June 27, 1872 aged 76. Under this it says "Elizabeth - His wife- Died April 5, 1873 - Aged 81. This would put her birthdate at 1791 or 1792. Becky in Ohio
