    3. Hi Group.....In McAllisters book, he shows some letters from one J.W. Headden, a Neville relative, who evidently compiled a letter co-authored with Dorah Meckler and Mrs. O'Neill. In reading the material, I can't quite make the connections (which is nothing new). Does anyone out there have the routing of J. W. Headden to his Neville anscestors........thanx you all (these are southern Neville's)...take care........Ren Neville

    2. Ren Neville
    3. Hi group......boy have things been quiet. Question: Does anyone out there have any "proof" that Joseph Neville B: 1707 m. Ann Bohannan, was the son of John Neville b: 1661 m. Elizabeth Bohannan? Have asked this before, but think there are a few new members since the last post Also, for those of you who are descended from William Neville b: 1739 m. Winifred Oldham (reported brother to above Joseph Sr) what are you using for "proof" of parenthood or perhaps, do you think William's (Josephs) parents were other than which is normally assumed. P.S. Anybony having any luck with Bridget Thorsley connecting her to John in England? See ya.......Ren

    1. Denis Neville
    2. I have compiled information on Dennis Neville which documents one Neville family who lived in PA, KY, MS, and LA in 1700's and 1800's. This infomation has been collected over a period of several years with a great deal of help coming from Ruth Nevels of Mississippi. According to parish records in LA, Denis and his wife Helen Brown were natives of Ireland. Denis was born probably between 1725 and 1750. Since he and his children and grandchildren can be followed fairly closely in records and because he had quite a few descendants, this information may benefit other researchers trying to find a connection with him or untangle some of the early Neville families. They lived for a time in Monongolia and Fayette County, PA, (border of VA) before and during the Revolutionary War. One of his daughters married Rezin Bowie, inventor of the Bowie knife and brother to Jim Bowie who made the knife famous and died at Alamo. Some of the families connected with Dennis Neville's family in LA originated in St. Mary's Co., MD. A question I would like to pose to our group concerns Helen Brown, Dennis Neville's wife. Does anyone know if there is a connection between her and Agnes Nancy Brown who m. Joseph Neville, Jr. or between her and Daniel Brown who married Francis Neville b. ca 1720 and lived in Hampshire Co., VA in 1740's? Denis did live in areas where there were other Neville families which do not appear to be connected, at least according to records I have checked so far. Those interested in a copy of the information can contact me through the discussion list or my address: jdfaulk@hop-uky.campus.mci.net Please let me know if you have any additions or corrections. 1. General Joseph Neville's obituary
    2. Glenn Gohr
    3. This is Brigadier General Joseph Neville who married Agnes Nancy Brown. He is listed in the Neville books as son of Joseph Neville, Sr. and Ann Bohannan. This obituary was referenced in MARRIAGES AND DEATHS 1763 TO 1820, by Mary Bondurant Warren, 1968. I have a copy of the actual obituary taken from the SAVANNAH REPUBLICAN, April 12, 1819. It was sent to me in 1988 by Della Morgan Martin. "Died--On the 4th of March, at hes seat, in Hardy county, (Va.) general Joseph Neville, after a short illness, in the 85th year of his age. He was an old and respectable citizen of the county of Hardy, universally esteemed; during his long life he filled many offices of high trust and confidence. In the revolutionary war he bore a zealous and active part in his country's behalf. At the close of that struggle, he was appointed, on the part of the state of Virginia, one of the commissioners to run the line between that state and Pennsylvania, and he afterwards represented the district in which he lived in the congress of the United States. At the time of his death he held the commission of brigadier general of the militia." Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

    1. James Neville / Nevels
    2. To what family group does the James Nevill found in Washington Co., PA during Revolutionary War belong? What was his connection with Philip Nevill who served in same county? Research data collected: 1778 Lancaster Co., PA: James Nevil took oath of allegiance. 18 April 1777, William and Simeon Nevil also took oath in Lancaster Co. ( I do not know if this is the same James found in Washington Co., PA.) 7 Dec 1781 Washington Co., PA: James Nevill in Capt. George Sharp's Company, 3rd Bn. 5 June 1783: Pennsylvania Oaths of Allegiance (source) - James Nevil, formerly of Maryland, taken prisoner by British at sea, was forced into the British Service and deserted the man-of-war last week. (I do not know if this is the same James found in Washington Co., PA.) No date: James Nevill listed in Captain Bilderback's co., county of Westmoreland, PA. (I do not know if this is the same James found in Washington Co., PA) No date: James Nevill listed as Washington Co, PA soldier of Revolution. 1778 - 1783: James Nevill served as Washinton Co. ranger on frontier. 1791: Spanish land claim of James Nevill referred to in William Mackey deed 1804 on land in Natchez District (later Claiborne Co., MS). Philip Nevill seems to have also had legal claim to this same land according to Natchez deeds and also according to land claims when U.S. took over territory from Spanish.

    1. Philip Nevill
    2. To what family does Philip Nevill of Washington Co., PA, during Revolutionary War belong? What was his connection to James Nevill who served in Washington Co. at same time? Jan 1774: Philip Nevill left Port of London. Listed residence as London, age as 24. Destination: Maryland as indentured servant. Sailed on ship Peggy. Occupation: Husbandman (farmer?). (I do not know if he arrived nor if this is the same Philip found in Washington Co., PA) 12 May 1777: Philip Nevill listed as private in 3rd Regiment, Maryland Troops (According to one researcher, this regiment had many Charles Co., MD names in it.) (I do not know if this is the Philip Nevill found in Washington Co., PA.) 1778 - 1783: Philip Nevill listed as a ranger on the frontier in Washington Co., PA. March 1782: Philip Nevill in Capt. Scott's Co., 3rd Bn. 1 June 1782: Philip Nevill ordered on duty for defense of the frontiers. 8th class of Capt. Wm. Crawford's Co. No date: Philip Nevill listed in Lt. Richard Seaton's Co. for service during Rev. War. About 1790: Philip Nevill's daughter Mary born in Maryland. This Philip resided in Jefferson Co., Mississippi by mid-1790's. His daughter Mary married (1) Robert McFall (McPhall) by 1817 in Jefferson Co., MS and married (2) James Ashley in 1828 in Jefferson Co., MS. On 1850 census of Franklin Co., MS, she is listed as Polly Ashley and gives place of birth as Maryland. 1794: Philip Nevill a claimant for 300 acres on Cole's Creek, 15 mi. NE of Fort Panmure (Natchez). 1807: United States allowed William Mackey's claim to 100 acres on Bayou Pierre. Original grantee under Spanish claim for same land in 1795 listed as Philip Nevill. According to land records, the claim on Bayou Pierre appears to be the same 100 acres referred to in William Mackey's deed in 1804 which states the original claimant of 100 acres in Claiborne Co., MS, in 1791 was James Nevill. I do not know why James and Philip are both listed as original grantees for same land.

    1. William Nevill/Nevels
    2. Hello group, It's good to have the list going again. Thanks, Glen, for taking care of the details related to finding a new home for us. I truly appreciate your time and effort in doing this. I am trying to find the father of my great-great grandfather William Nevels who was born in Mississippi in 1808. In the 1880 census of Holmes Co., MS, William states that his father was born in SC and his mother in VA. Below is the information I have on William (copied from a family Bible and researched through census, family information, newspaper accounts, cemetery records, death certificates, etc. - no marriage certificates because of courthouse fire) William Nevels, b. 8 March 1808, probably Jefferson Co., MS; d. 22 Oct 1883, Holmes Co, MS. May have lived in other MS counties, including Yazoo and Hinds, before coming to Holmes Co. (On 1880 U.S. census for Holmes Co., MS, William says his father was born in SC and his mother in VA.) Brothers and sisters of William Nevels, b. 1808: Isaac Nevels, b. 16 April 1812 Betsey Ann Nevels, b. 15 March 1816 James Gardner Nevels, b. 6 Sept. 1818 Sarah Jane Nevels, b. 4 Jan 1821 Hiram M. Nevil, b. 15 Feb. 1817, in Mississippi. (Nevil or Nevill is her maiden name. My grandfather said she was the daughter of a Neville and a Peyton. I have been unable to find a Neville - Peyton marriage in early 1800's, yet, in Southern states), b. 15 Feb. 1817, probably Jefferson Co., MS. Children of William J. and Mary J. I have not been able to find any descendants, yet, of William's second set of children.) My grandfather was Robert Porter Nevels (son of Robt. Peyton Nevels above), b. 1 Nov. 1872 in Holmes Co., MS; m. 14 April 1909 to Alberta Virginia Ferguson in Memphis, TN; d. 4 Sept 1963 at my parents' home in Hopkinsville, KY; bur. 3. Although I've never seen any legal proof concerning Ann Bohannan as the wife of Joseph Neville (He is not a Col.--that would be his son, who actually was a General), I do believe she was his first wife as all the traditional history says. There are deeds and other records that show the Bohannans were neighbors of the Nevilles. Joseph Neville, Sr., b. ca. 1707 Isle of Wight Co., VA, d. aft. 1790 Hardy Co., VA; m. 1st, Ann Bohannan ca. 1729 in VA or MD. She was b. ca. 1710 in prob. in VA, d. ca. 1777 Hampshire Co., VA. Joseph Neville, Sr., md. 2nd to Mary Elliott on Dec. 11, 1777 at Fauquier County, VA. I have not seen or heard of the record that Ren gives of a Joseph and Mary Neavell acknowledging a deed of Thomas Roy in Caroline Co., VA on July 8, 1743. That is interesting. I wonder if there was a Joseph of the right age among the Isle of Wight Nevilles that are mentioned in John Bennett Boddie's books? Joseph Neville, Jr. married Agnes Nancy Brown. Sometimes she went by Agnes and sometimes by Nancy. That also has been a confusion in the past. I've never seen Ann Bohannan listed in any primary sources or even and "Ann" md. to old Joseph Neville, but I tend to support the tradition anyway. Ann Bohannan and Joseph Neville, Sr. appear to be first cousins. Brian Walls has worked this out, he thinks, and the line goes back to Duncan Bohannan who had legal dealings with the early Nevilles. 3. Old Boohger sez in his report "Joseph Neville, fourth of John, Jr, born about 1693, in Isle of Wight County, married Ann Bohannan, a cousin, in one of the lower counties of Virginia, and in "1745", settled with his family in Prince William County, as appears by deed, recorded in Liber M Folio 95, from Thomas Walker for 206 acres of land...etc. July 8, 1743, Joseph Neavell and wife "Mary" acknowledge a deed to Thomas Roy in "Caroline Co"., VA (perhaps on a visit?) July 20, "1750"...deed of Thomas Walker of Hamilton Parish, Prince William Co, blacksmith to Joseph Neavill of same parish, planter; 206 A etc. (no mention of wife Ann or Mary)...<slight problem with time span, not a big deal> December 10, 1777-Marriage bond of Joseph Neavil to Mary Ellett, bondsman John Moffett, Fauquier Co.(formed from Prince William county in 1759) Marriage was December 11, 1777. Nowhere is Ann Bohannan mentioned. We have mention of a Mary and then Mary Ellett......where is Ann. Was she the mother of these children. Does it make a difference...guess so if your a Bohannan or an Mary______. Guess old Mary Ellett doesn't come into play as John was 70 years old when he corraled this filly. If anyone has any information to share on Ann Bohannan or Mary_______would like to put this "issue" to bed. Now as to old Col. Joseph's children. Before I was having little fits over his son Joseph, commonly known as General Joseph. His baptism record appears on December 2, 1733 as "son of Joseph Nevil and his "wife", at Abington Parish, Gloucester Co., VA. John, George and Mary are also listed either in deed or marriage consent. I'm sure if I look deeper in the stack, I will find William and James also, but still think old Boohger is out to lunch with Benjamin and Richard. Boogher uses the following to "prove" Joseph's other children. under Benjamin, B: 1737, died in Fauquier Co., VA, 1780, leaving his property to his sister, Ann, and his nephew, John, the son of his brother Richard. To my knowledge no one has ever come up with any documentation that "proves" these were Neville's. As I recall, someone said there was a Benjamin and Richard Newells there. If any of you out there think you come from these children, please let me know. I am a John Neville descendant, brother to Gen. Joseph, sons of Col. Joseph. I'm still having a problem with the statement that Gen. Joseph Neville came from Scotland, sired George, who sired George Norbourne, but so be it. It looked good to me, and also I have a gut feeling that there were two Joseph Neville's floating around VA about that time, so, on we go......take care group, any help much appreciated.........bye

    1. Library searching
    2. Okay Kinfolk, At the moment my family plans to spend a couple months driving around the US this summer. We expect to spend about a week in VA. I'll send the boys to the Boy Scout National Jamboree and then head for some libraries IF someone can make specific suggestions as to: 1. What library and where 2. What specific item (book titles would be nice). I take it anything on Bohannon would be important, but can someone give me some direction as to where I might find "on site" items? I know there's a good genealogical library somewhere in Indiana, does anyone know any details? Any other good libraries? --we're travelling nearly the whole country! I expect to spend one day in Salt Lake City at the LDS library. The computer shuts down June 4, so send me any suggestions you have by then! I promise nothing! 3. Does anyone have proof that Ann Bohannan was married to Col. Joseph Neville b: 1707, or even the slightest hint that she was his bride, girl friend or lover? I like most, show her as the mother of his children, "however" there are a couple of items of record that concern me from the records of Prince William County and Caroline County. 1. July 8, "1743", Joseph Neavell and wife "Mary" acknowledge deed to Thomas Roy (John Frederick Dorman, Caroline Co., VA Order Book 1740-1746, Part 2, 1742-3-1744, p 21) 2. December 10, "1771". Marriage bond of Joseph Neavil to Mary Ellett, bdm: John Moffett (John K. Gott, Fauquier Co., VA Marriage Bonds: 1759-1854 of Marriage Returns: 1758-1848) Was Ann Bohannan a wife as good old Boogher said (without proof) or a figment of his imagination. I make the assumption that this Joseph is the same as the one who resided in Gloucester, then Caroline and Sportsylvania and on to Fauquier-Prince William Co., and later to Hampshire-Hardy Co., VA. It appear that he had two wifes, both named Mary. I show his second wife as Mary Elliot. P.S. as most of Joseph's children can not be proven, does anyone know the brand of dope Boohger was smoking?

    3. Concerning Bridget Nevill-- With a name like Bridget it should be obvious that she ties in to the John Neville who married Bridget Thorsby. According to Joseph B. Neville's book, A 370-YEAR HISTORY OF ONE NEVILLE FAMILY (1612-1982), p. 8, we have: Bridget Nevill (1692-1748) who married Charles Gee. She is listed as the 4th known child of John Neville (1661-1733) who married Elizabeth Bohannan; granddaughter of James Nevill (1640-1711); and gt-granddaughter of John Nevill (1612- 1664) and his wife Bridget Thoresby. Some of the information referenced on Bridget Nevill Gee comes from the book, THE GEE FAMILY, published by The Tuttle Publishing Company, Inc., Rutland, Vermont. Descendants of this family are listed in Joseph B. Neville's book in later pages. Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

    3. Ren: You threw up?! Thought you drank all that Scotch a long time ago!! Be careful of these turn of the [last] century books where people report their grandparents came from Scotland or Ireland. I've seen a couple in my Duncan family who report things like that, and I still can't figure out who they were talking about. These are usually fifth genearation Americans of Scottish (not Ulster Scot) descent reporting that their grandparents were from Ireland. Shrug. Here's another wrinkle. Have you ever noticed that there are a couple of Presley Nevills among my Solomon Nevill group in TN--the ones who are hanging around the George Nevill group? It could be that they had heard of Presley Nevill and wanted to name after a famous Nevill, or there could be a family connection. Don't know. Kathy ppskdd2@airmail.net

    3. PLEASE PRINT Hi group. To those who think they are descended from John Neville m. Elizabeth Bohannan or their Rev War general sons Joseph and John (I come from John) or their chillin, may I offer you excerps from a biographical Sketch published in "1899", within shoutin range of very close, hands on relatives. This concerns the biography of one Geroge N. Neville aka George Norbourne Neville, reported last son George Neville and Elizabeth Wolfe. George Neville is "reportedly" the 12 child of Joseph Neville and Agness Nancy Brown. To you southern types, this might not be of interest, but perhaps you can help this old person out. According to "Portrait and Biographical Album" Vermilion County, Illinois, published in Chicago, Chapman Brothers, "1889" under the "subject" George N Neville, in part......(and not exact).....The ancestry of Mr. Neville is traced back to the Land of the Thistle, his paternal grandparents "emigrating" from Scotland to Virginia, in time for his grandfater, Joseph Neville, to take part as a brigadier general on the side of the colonists in their struggle for liberty.....amoung sons of grandfather Neville (gen Joseph) was George, the father of the subject, who was born in Moorefield W. VA and was the "youngest" of twelve children........They site his marriage to Elizabeth Wolfe, mother of George N. Neville (the subbject) the dau of Lewis and Cataherine Wolfe, natives of Germany. The article goes on to show marriage dates and children of George Norbourne Neville etc. whos wife is Mary S. Throckmorton. I recently discovered a cousin that grew up in Richmond CA as my family did. His name was David Calfee. My parents always told me that the Calfee's were related. My Grandfather had them tied to (without proof) to to Gen Joseph Neville. When I contacted David he said the Neville connection was one Ada Nourbourne Neville, parents unknown. Ada is listed as a child of George Norbourne Neville and Mary Throckmorton. Obviously I was thrilled to find this connection but in reading this "Portrait" that arrived in the mail today, I threw up. Now I don't have a problem being descended from the Scotch Nevilles, lord knows I drank too much of it in younger years. This just adds a big bond fire to the disputed parents of one Joseph Neville who has been claimed to be by Joseph and Ann, Richard and Ann, and George and Ann Burroughs. Could it be that all of these "big time" genealogist ie:Boogher etc missed the banana boat all together and General Joseph is completly segregated from the "reported" line. Now wouldn't it be real fun if George N., son of George, is the grandson of George and Ann Burroughs.....I sure like it when they name all their kids after some relative. Hey group, put on your thinking caps and review your notes. Anyone have a will of Joseph Neville B: 1707, Isle of Wight. Joseph Neville B: 1733 of Abingdon Parrish, Glouchester VA died Moorfield, Hardy Co. VA or has anyone got the "poop" on his reported son, George Neville m. Elizabeth Wolfe. Looking for deeds, wills, family bibles etc. Now aint this fun......take care......Ren Neville

    3. Regarding Glen's post of April 14, 1997 indicating that one Christopher Thursby who married one Jane Nevil, daughter of Sir Thomas Nevil of Holt and suggesting that perhaps that the John-Bridget marriage might be tied to this line, I did go to an LDS Library today and looked into some of their files. Will have to admit it will take one of you who is expierenced in "moving around" their program to "find" something of substance, however, I did run into some information which I encourage those of you who are familiar with the LDS system to "run on down" to your local Family History Center and get into their files. I found a John Neval c: Aug 2, 1606, son of Thomas Nevall of Eccleshall, Stafford England. A John Nevel, son of Thomas Nevel of North Willingham, Lancashire, c: Mar 7, 1618 (both are porbably not our John) however did find reference to Christopher Thursby who married Jane Nevill. Christopher was born 1608, Castor, Northampton and married Jane aabout 1627 in Abington, Northampton. They show Christophers second marriage to Elizabeth Dove abt 1631, Abington, Northampton, England. Children of Christopher and Jane Neville are William Thursby and Nevill Thursby (no Bridget noted). Children of Christopher and Eliz Dove are Elizabeth of Abington and Christopher of Abington. Sorry no cigars, but perhaps Glenn will have some info from abroad..........take care......Ren Neville
