    1. NC Neville references
    2. Hi Paddy, Thank you for the Canadian Neville listings you sent to the list. I found a Moses Nevil listing that you may already have. I am including it in the list below so you can see if you have any links. Since Neville is not a common name and Moses Neville even more uncommon, maybe there is a connection between the family in Beaufort, NC, and the one in Harford Co., MD which went to Ontario. Does anyone have a copy of Hugh Floyd's book, The Neville Family of Bullock Co., GA? I am sure some of the listings below are references to Floyd's GA line of Nevilles, particularly Jacob. Seeing him with Moses Nevil makes one curious. Could the Moses in NC also be a descendant of the "killed-by-Indians" James Neville of Northhampton Co., VA, if the James who shows up in NC in 1697 is indeed the same man as the one in VA? The following is taken from E. N. McAllister's book Nevill Lineage of Everett Nevill McAllister. I was going to post a question about Elizabeth tonight, and there she was in JP's post. I just received some information about her from a Hampton descendant. JP, do you have a copy of her will or know anything else about her or which Neville she married? The Elizabeth Neville below had a father-in-law named Thomas Hampton who d. in 1703, not a husband. Her husband is shown as Francis, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Bridle) Hampton. The person who sent me the following information said his cousin found it in a book in SC. I will try to find out the name of the book. Descendants of these people came to Holmes Co., MS in 1830's. That is where my Nevels lived, and on the 1880 census, my William Nevels stated that his mother was from VA and his father from SC. I am wondering if some male Nevilles were in the Newberry Co. area of SC where Francis and Elizabeth (Neville) Hampton were. Any facts or guesses? 3. -- [ From: JP Barton * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- The Bohannon marriages are repeated in Joe Neville's book, and contributed to prof. researcher William F. Boogher, and notes that Boogher does not cite his sources. ~~Ren: You asked others about a William, bro. of Joseph 1707- . I don't know if you misspoke, or it someone here actually is working on such a line? Anyhow - Joseph doesn't have a bro. William [according to Joe Neville] and also according to Joe Neville's book, it was Joseph b. 1707's son John b. 1731 who m. Winifred Oldham. I suspect the missing Prince William records will really hurt us here. ~~Jan: Lots of Faulkners and Porters in Middlesex Co. where my George Neville marrys... you may end up searching here yet <g> The following Bohannon/Neville vital records are from Christ Church Middlesex co., VA: George Neville 1695-1774 m. 22 Jun 1725 Anna [Hannah] Symes. She was bapt. 29 Dec 1706 and the dau. of Thomas & Ann Symes [most likely, as they are the only Symes parents in the book] Hannah Neville d. 31 dec 1728. George Neville m. 2nd Mary Gibbs 20 Jun 1729, dau. of John & Mary Gibbs [inferred, they had a dau. Mary bapt. 22 Apr 1711]. John Gibbs d. 1726 , Mary Gibbs [prob. his wife] d. 1728. George Bohannon d. 23 Aug 1726 William Bohannon d. 1732 Henry Bohannon d . 1740 Elizabeth Neville dau. of John b. 1668 [and sister of above George] m. Joseph Bohannon [according to Boogher]. Christ Church records show Joseph & Elizabeth Bohannon had Neville Bohannon 1724, Sarah 1728, and William 1730. [there could be more children, or, its possible this is about the time the Nevilles and Bohannons moved on... ] Its possible Joseph was Elizabeth's cousin, as it is believed that her father John was m. to Elizabeth Bohannon ca 1685. Note that Joe Neville does not include Neville Bohannon's bro. & sister, yet knows that Neville Bohannon was b. in Middlesex Co., and contributes that info. to Boogher. Makes me think Boogher didn't do his homework - how could he find one birth/baptism, and not the other two? Now - I have a question: do any of you researchers who have the James Neville 1686-1752 m. Lucy Thomas 2nd, line, know who his first wife was? [he d. Albemarle Co.] I don't have that line, but wondered if anyone ever found the first wife.

It appears most of us are working from the Joe Neville book, so we all have the same problem - lack of proof. The sparcity of records forces us to assume some relationships by inference; hopefully, eventually we may find documentation. Note that Joe did not have that marriage of George and Hannah Symes - he only knew that George's wife was Hannah _______. I found that, and the baptismal records of Mary and Betty in Christ Church Middlesex published records. I have the book, and there are a number of Bohannons mentioned in it. I will share them in time. I am desc. of Mary Neville and John Rosser who eventually were in Fauquier Co . VA. John was b. King George Co., and was willed land by his father Richard 1735, in Pr. William was dead before 25 Apr 1665 when Roger Neville sold to Arthur Skinner, his father in law, all claims to the estate of "William Neville my father." 16 May 1665 John Neville of Nansemond sold to arthur Skinner 125a. 1689 John Neville & wife Elizabeth made a deed of gift to Benjamin Beale & his wife Martha, evidently their daughter. The deed is witnessed by John Neville Jr. The deed provided that if Benjamin & his wife died without issue the land was to go to Benjamin Neville, son of the donor. John Neville sold land on the Western Branch, I of W, to John Johnson 1698. Arthur Skynner sold to Thomas Pitt the plantation where Skinner now lives, being 1/2 of 500a. formerly in the tenure of Thomas Butler & now Arthur Skynner & Anthony Holliday; including 125a. granated by John Neville & wife Elizabeth to Arthur Skynner. 8 Feb 1671. [I include this, as it sounds like Nevilles did not live on this land, but that Skinner, and Butler before him, were tenants on the land while in Neville ownership, until Nevilles granted it to Skinner ] Benjamin Neville held 475a. in Nansemnd 1704. A Benjamin Neville made a will in NC and many of the name in that state are probably desc. from Benjamin & Roger Neville. John Neville Jr made his will in I of W in 1726, probated 1730. He left eight daus. & one son, John, to whom he gave all of his land. This John made a will 1740 and named sons John, Thomas & Joseph, and dau. penelope . An Elizabeth Neville made her will 1747, her children mentioned in the will may not be Nevilles, as she seems to have formerly been the wife of Thomas Hampton who d. 1703. The inv. of Joseph Neville was filed I of W 1782. John, son of John Neville of the will of 1740, is said to have moved to Pr Wm or Fauquier Co. where a will was probated 1768. Seem to recall I did this to Levenworth county some years back and they couldn't find it or didn't try. I ran into some info (marriage lic #) that might be of additional value to them so would like to give it another try. Does anyone have the name, address, proceedure etc for getting info from Kansas.........thank you! Ren Neville

    1. Nevilles in Ontario
    2. Hello everyone: My name is Paddy and I have just joined the group. I descend from a Moses NEVILL who migrated to Ontario Canada in 1794 from Harford Co., MD. He and his wife Elizabeth MITCHELL were in a group which included his brother John NEVILL and his wife Martha MITCHELL and Thomas WELCH and his wife Mary MITCHELL. The 3 Mitchell women were the daughters of Thomas MITCHELL of Harford, MD. and his wife Hannah OSBORN. Hannah, a widow, was also in the group. Moses was said to have had 6 children, of which Kent, Thomas and John are known and there was possibly a Martha and a Margaret. John Nevill and Martha MITCHELL had 2 children: Ephrian Cole MITCHELL and possibly Mary NEVILL. There were other Nevill(e) families in early Ontario which I have not connect- ed to mine. They were: James NEVILLE or NEVILLS as he was known was from New Jersey. He came to Ontario about 1787 with a wife Eve DeShired and children. A character certificate presented by his neighbours was signed in Sussex Co. N.J. He had sons: Abraham b. 1780; William, Isaac, James and Jacob and daughters: Agnes Nancy, Rebecca, and Phoebe. Edward NEVILLE, b. c1753, United Empire Loyalist. I don't know where he was from; he had children: George, Edward, Robert, James and Frances and his wife was Catherine. If anyone is interested I can look for his land petition which may give where he was living before he migrated or his military unit. There is another James NEVILLE, referred to as Major James. He was born c1789 and was married to Elizabeth (MANN). He could be a s/o of one of my Nevill brothers but the names of his family don't seem to fit. I don't know where he was born but suspect a N.J. connection. He could have been here and he could also be a son of the James above. I don't know the names of his children except Alma. Other Neville(s) buried in the same cemetery as Major James are: Arthur W. Nevills b.c1792; Charles L. Nevills b. c1822, Matilda Nevills b. c1816, Rhoda Martin a daughter of Joseph & Sophie NEVILLS b. c1842. That's about it for the early ones. I thought I would post this in case one of you is missing someone who could have turned up here. Paddy

    1. William D. Nevill
    2. kathy duncan
    3. Searching for William D. Nevels/Nevill who was born c. in 1842 in Tennessee. His mother is Martha E. Nevill who may have remarried by 1860. In 1850 they are living in Tishmingo Co., Mississippi. Don't know what happened to this William Nevill. Do not know where they moved, who William married, who his children were or if he lived to adulthood. Do you have an unidentified William Nevill in you files? He may even be living in a household with a different surname in 1860. Thanks for looking.... Kathy Duncan ppskdd2@airmail.net

    1. Stray Nevills
    2. kathy duncan
    3. Any one still out there? Looking for three lost Nevill boys. Check your files for male Nevills born between 1835 and 1840 in TN. Do you have any that you need to identify parents for? Their whereabouts on the 1850 census is unknown. They may be living with G.D. [Granderson] Nevill, or they may be in a household with a different surname. Their mother is Martha E.________ who might have remarried by 1850. They may not have all been in the same household. Thanks for looking, Kathy Duncan ppskdd2@airmail.net

    1. DAR WILLIAM AND JOSEPH SR.
    2. Ren Neville
    3. Glenn gave me a name and address of one Della Morgan Martin who was successful in proving some of her Neville line to the DAR. I questioned her specificly about Joseph Neville Sr and his son William which many of you claim to be descended from and she reports. Her application was denied by DAR and they quote: "To date we have established only two children of Joseph, Sr. in our records, namely Mary and George Jr. Therefore we must have documentation from primary sources such as land and probate records in order to verify your supplemental" As I recall, the world has been stuck here for 10 years anyway. Most of us take the "assumed" position that we go on to John B: 1612 through John then James without "proof" and now we are looking to England for the Thorsley connection. Once again, I've seen too many Georges and Richards mentioned as possible patriarchs for these people. Anybody have a data bank on some of these other possibilities..........take care Ren Neville.....PS. Anybody know the address for SAR and how to apply, think it would be sorta cute to be a Son of the Revolution as apposed to a son of a......oh well........

    3. -- [ From: JP Barton * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Hi all: First, I would like to ask for a few replies advising me that I am using the correct/incorrect address to write to the "group." [I use Prodigy's Email Connection and don't seem to have it set up for groups, at the moment] I sent Diane my Neville line [as it seems to be, for the time being] and will forward it to anyone interested: John Neville ca 1612-1665 of MD down to George Neavil ca 1695-1774, d. Fauquier Co. VA. Among other sources, I have the 350 year history of the Nevilles by Joe Neville of KS., if anyone wants a lookup. I don't think I found any errors in the book that I recall, but certainly there are many omissions. Jeanne Porter Barton - JP Barton@Prodigy.com Prince George's Co. MD

    1. new to the list
    2. hello. I am new to the list, researching my Neville ancestors in late 1600s VA. I am trying to find the parents of George Neaville Neville, husband to Hannah Symes, father of Betty Neaville Neville...George was born roughly 1695, Hannah was born roughly1699, and their daughter born Dec.3,1728. Does anyone know anything about these people, by chance? Missi Nussbaum Nmissi@aol.com
