VA: children of Joseph and Elizabeth Bohannon baptized at Christ Church: Nevill b. 1 Jun 1724 - bapt 28 Jun 1724 George b. 20 Aug 1726 bapt 1726 Sarah b. 5 Aug 1728 bapt 25 Aug 1728 William b. 19 Nov 1730 bapt 30 Nov 1730 born to John & Agnes Bohannon: William b. 3 Jan 1730, bapt 17 Jan 1730 born to Henry & Ann Bohannon: John b. 17 Sep 1740 burials: George Bohannon d. 23 Aug 1726 William Bohannon d. 20 Sep 1732 note: although it seems logical that the George who d. 23 Aug 1726 is the infant, I'm not so sure about that. George is one of five infants listed together as bapt "1726," and they are recorded between entries for Nov 1726 and Jan 1726/7; not sure if that means anything. There are a number of others with "1726" rather than the full date. The next entry after George;s birth 20 Aug 1726, is Mary, dau. of George & Hannah Neville b. 20 Nov 1726, bapt 1726. William who d. 1732 could be infant or adult, no way to tell. But, often the entries for children say "child of" and his does not. I wouldn't count on that, though. There are no Bohannon marriages listed. The records start as early as 1653....

    1. CLARENCE MONTAQUE NEVILLE
    2. Ren Neville
    3. Hi group. Just uncovered an old broach I had forgotten about that would have been a hand-me-down from the Presley Neville m. Nancy Morgan line. There is a picture of a man, age probably 30+ with the inscription on the back "C M Neville". The only one I can tie it to would be Clarence Montague Neville, 12 child of Presley and Nancy b: 3-27-1804 in Pittsburgh PA. I know nothing about this Clarence other than his birthdate. Can anyone help me out? Thanx group....have a nice holiday! Ren Neville

    2. Ren, Thank you for your quick notice the errors in the information on Septimus Williams and William Newton Neville. I was using Joseph Neville's book, and my astigmatism must have kicked in. I was on the wrong line, and you are on the right track. I am very sorry to post incorrect information. William Newton Neville's wife is shown as Nancy Helen Puryear and just below his name in the book is that of Septimus Williams II whose wife is shown as Laura F. Basford Jan _________________ >Guess I'm off track again (so what else is new) in the last paragraph, >you list Septimus Williams II (1847-1945) wife as being Nancy Helen >Puryear. Somewhere I had Nancy attached as the wife of William Newton >Neville with children Nina and Lloyd William. As to old Septimus, I have >his wife as Laura E. Basford, not Nancy Helen. My problem is that I >can't (at least in the last few minutes) figure out where I got the >information. Question: is this problem only mine. Does anyone else have >Septimus attached to Laura or is Septimus safe with Nancy Helen. Any >clarification can help........thanx list.......Ren Neville

    1. WILLIAM H. NEVILLE (1844-1890)
    2. Ren Neville
    3. Hi Group.....In JB's Book <370 years> on page 121, he mentions one William H. Neville that he found on a tombstone in Greenfield Cemetary, Fairmont, Ill. and his wife "Mary". JB shows these people to be the ones shown in the 1870 Vance County Census as the parents of a one year old son "Presley" and a one month old daughter Stella. It was his thinking that perhaps with the use of "Presely" he was descended from Col. Presley Neville (my ancestor). Can anyone identify this William H. Neville and tie it into Col Presley or whomever? Thanxs group!

    2. Kathy, x Thank you for the information you posted on Montgomery Co., TN Nevills. Thanks, too, for your family story. If my grandfather had not given us some good stories which have proven correct for the most part, I would be more in the dark than I am about my Nevels/Nevill lineage. The following information relates to what I have already posted on George Nevill's line. Some of the people on our discussion list who were in the Society of John Neville descendants can probably add to this. I am sure this is not a comprehensive list of George's descendants. I think Mr. Robert Jett, a descendant of this line, submitted quite a bit of information to the SoJND. Some of the information below comes from Mr. Jett and some from 370-Year History of One Neville Family. By the way, was the killed-at-the-Alamo Travis related to the Travises in your family? Many of those boys were from Tennessee. Jan _______________________ Violetta S. (Nevill) Pollock (continued) 1. Demaris Pollock (1795- ) m. John Travis (1763- ) A. Sarah Violetta Travis (1815- ) m. 2. Hi everyone, I sent some of you a "pasted" copy of some NC references. However, after looking at an e-mail copy of my pasting, I realized that it was a mess. It did not make the transfer from my word processing program to my e-mail program very well. Some information is difficult to decipher because of odd spacing. If you would like for me to re-send this info in file form, let me know. Also, let me know if you asked for a copy and did not get one. We have had several family activities lately, and I am a little more fragmented than usual. Jan

    1. NEVILLE, Granderson and horses
    2. kathy duncan
    3. Jan: The Nevills from George's line and from Solomon's line have something else in common: horses! Granvil D. Nevill Jr. took his grandson Virgil on a trip with him when Virgil was a boy. As an elderly man, Virgil was able to recall several details of information that he remember his grandfather Granvil telling him about Granvil's own father. It seems that part of the purpose of this trip was to go from Avery, TX to Mt. Pleasant, TX. On this trip they stopped at Granvil's father's grave. Here's what Virgil remembered about Granvil's father: He had a bad temper. He was always trading horses. He taught school for a while. He made harnesses for a living. Granvil still had negative feelings for his father because he had divorced Granvil's mother. Granvil and his father ran a freight line between Mt. Pleasant and Jefferson, TX. Virgil was unable to recall two key ideas: where Granvil's father's grave was, and the names of Granvil's parents. Shucks, foiled again! BUT from these tidbits I have been able to document the following about Granderson D. Nevill.... 1. He was sued by Allen Nesbitt in Dickson Co., TN because he had attacked and beaten Nesbitt in 1841. 2. He was sued over a horse trade gone sour in Dickson Co., TN. The other guy felt the horse was inferior abt 1841. 3. Martha Nevel divorced him in Dickson Co., TN in 1845 citing him as abusive, mean-tempered, and an adulterer. 4. In 1858 G.D. Nevill pays taxes in Bowie Co., TX. 5. In 1858 G.D. Nevill runs an ad in the newspaper with his recipe for how to prepare hides for tanning at the tannery he is operating with an Ellis. 6. On the 1880 census he says he is a schoolteacher. 7. There is a reference to a Prof. Nevill teaching in a one room school in Scott Co. near the Sebastian Co. line in 1873 [Granvil is in the area with his wife and children homesteading land in 1871.] So to date I have documented everything except for the freight line between Mt. Pleasant and Jefferson....and believe me I have looked through tax and county records!! And I still have not found Granderson's grave. Lesson: oral traditions are important to investigate. And TN Nevills love horses!! [re. GEorge W. Nevill was a horse trader too.] Kathy

    3. Ren and the rest: I've just returned from a 2-week vacation to Colorado. Glad the list is still functioning well. Also glad Ren was able to contact Della Morgan Martin regarding her William son of Joseph Sr., line. She did prove William as a Revolutionary War patriot, but I'm sorry to hear that there was not enough proof to link him to Joseph Sr. in order to satisfy the DAR. I am the one who established Joseph Sr. as a Rev. War patriot. I proved it for the Sons of the American Revolution back in about 1983. Later I helped a distant Neville & Hanks cousin, Josephine Adams (decd. summer of 1996) of Danville, CA to get this line proved for the DAR. Last year, another cousin, Katherine Littlefield Smith was approved as a descendant of Joseph Neville, Sr. through his daughter Mary Neville Dodson (the same ancestor I originally proved through). The addresses for SAR and DAR are: National Society SAR 1000 S. Fourth St. Louisville, KY 40203 National Society DAR 1776 D S treet, N.W. Washington, DC 20006 For the record, I joined the Sons of the American Revolution in 1981. Currently I am serving my second term as President of the Ozark Mountain Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, located in Springfield, Missouri. If anyone wishes to join the Sons of the Am. Revolution, I'd be glad to send brochures and an application. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr (Neville list manager) ggohr01@mail.orion.org

    1. Tennessee Nevilles
    2. Kathy, I am posting some information about George Nevill who lived in Montgomery Co., TN. I have not verified all of this information which was given to me by various Neville researchers, but maybe it will help you get a better picture of this family group. George Nevill, b. 1734 in VA, son of Joseph and Ann or Mary Bohannon. (Joseph mentions son George in a Fauquier Co., VA deed.) Lived in Greenville District, SC, and Montgomery Co., TN, where he died in 1811. He was in TN ca 1785. Nevill's Station the name of the fort he and Joseph B. Nevill built on Red River near Clarksville, TN. He settled on military land granted by NC to soldiers of the Continental line. George married 26 March 1762 in Fauquier Co., VA, to Rachel Earle, b. ca 1740 in VA, dau. of Samuel Earle III and Anna Sorrell. She died in 1829 in Montgomery Co., TN. George and Rachel were the parents of the following: (1)Violetta S. (Soiel or Sorell) Nevill, b. 4 Feb. 1763 in Fauquier Co., VA; d. after 1838. She m. Barkely Wm. Pollock (after 1795?). (Later, I will add information on following generations and you can paste it in.) (2)Joseph Barger (or Barget) Nevill, b. 24 Dec. 1764 in Fauquier Co., VA; d. after 1850 (on 1850 Stewart Co., TN census). He m.(1) Rachel Whitfield House; m.(2) Elizabeth Pollock on 5 Oct. 1802 in Mont. Co., TN; m.(3) Mary Whitfield Killebrew No one has ever found any children fathered by Joseph. (3) Sophia Nevill, b. 19 May 1766 in Fauquier Co., VA; made will in 1838. She married Christopher Owens (no date). (4) Ann Nevill, b. 6 Feb. 1769 in Greenville Dist, SC; d. 5 May or Nov. 1796. She married Bryan Whitfield in 1795. in TN. (5) George Washington Nevill, b. 19 Feb. 1772 in Greenville Dist., SC; d. 2 Feb. 1859 in Hickman Co., KY (?). He married Rachel Killebrew in 1798. He moved to Weakley Co., TN, ca 1823, and then to Hickman Co., KY, ca 1827. However, the 1850 Montgomery Co., TN census shows him back there living with his brother John. I think he and Rachel are buried in Hickman Co., KY. (He and John were in shipping business together over in the Hickman - Ballard Co. area of KY. They shipped horses and probably tobacco and other goods down Mississippi River to Natchez and New Orleans. According to one researcher, George helped to build the flatboats used for shipping.) (6) John Nevill, b. 20 Mar. 1774 in Greenville Dist., SC; d. after 1850. He married Sarah (Sally) Wimberly. No one has found children fathered by John. He did adopt a daughter, Elizabeth, Sarah's by a former marriage(?). (7) Rachel Nevill, b. 27 Jan 1776 in Greenville Dist., SC; d. 1847. Married in 1800 in TN to Septimus Williams I. (They are ancestors of Robert Septimus Jett, a long-time Neville researcher who was a very active member of the Society of John Neville Descendants. Mr. Jett was a very gracious correspondent who helped me a great deal when I first began researching my line.) (8) Miriam (or Marian) Neville, b. 4 May 1778 in Greenville Dist., SC; d. 23 Apr. 1852. She married Needham Whitfield in 1798 in TN.

    1. William Neville of IW--No Dates
    2. kathy duncan
    3. Ren: I have no specific birth or death dates for William Neville and his son Roger. All I have are the dates Trimble came up with. I tend to think that William's Roger is too old to be the Roger who married the widow Elizabeth Hampton. My understanding is that my portion of my line went to Nansemond Co., VA and that the records there are missing (burned?). Since so many of the Isle of Wight County families migrated to NC--Halifax, Northampton, Bertie counties I think I will extend my search there in hopes that the Nevilles traveled around a bit instead of staying put in a county with bad records!! It's the strangest thing....my Nevilles were in one burned county after another....what do you suppose they were hiding!!!!? Kathy

    1. Roger Neville/William Neville
    2. Ren Neville
    3. Kathy.....my reply (as is was) got returned for somewhere in five pages of bs. Will try again direct on the roots line (I hope). What dates (birth-death) do you show for William and Roger. Was Rogers wife Elizabeth Skinner (I presume). Notes: Trimible in American Origins: William Nevill, who lived in Isle of Wight, VA as early as March 1642/43, was probably the first of this family in America. He died before 1665, and his widow ( ) Nevill married Arthur Skinner, since on April 25, 1665, his son Roger Nevill sold his interest in Williams land to his "father in law", Arthur Skinner. On May 16, 1665, John Nevill and his wife Elizabeth of Nansemond Co., VA sold Arthur Skinner 125 acres granted to Neville. Source: Isle of Wight VA deeds. By this I would assume that Arthur Skinner daughter ( ) married Roger Nevill, as apposed to "step-father", who married Roger Nevill. Guess Roger Nevill's mother married Arthur Skinner and his daughter married Roger.......hummmmm...how cozy. Also, would assume John and Roger are brothers, sons of William since they both grant their interest in daddies land (maybe not) both within 21 days of each other.. From John Bennett Baddie, pages 235, 236, in part. Nevill.....William Neville was first of his family in the country. In March 1642/43, the general assembly enacted that the boundaries of Isle of Wight "shall extend from the main river into the woods southerly into and including the plantations of William Neville And Robert Pitt"... Indenture dated August 7, 1672 between John Seward of Bristol, merchant, sells to another merchant in Bristol, all of John Sewards Dividend of land "Levy Neck" in the whole patent of Warwick squead. Friends listed.....Roger Nevill If anyone has the dates and genealogy of these turkeys, would appreciate your sending it along........If this is a repeat, ssorry, my original came back "Mail Failed"......all I did was hit the return button, oh well........cya...........Ren Neville
