Hi group...with all the new and welcome folks coming aboard, thought I'd try this one on again for size. There are two (2) JOHN NEVILLE'S that can resemble our "Ark and Dove" John in this family, so if anyone can extend, connect or has any information on these critters, please advise! 1. John Neville b: 1608, son of George Neville of Thorney, Nottinghamshire m. 11-23-1600 to Jane Tyrwhitt. 2. John Neville b: (around that time), son of Denny's Neville of Throney, m. Jean Scarlet: I don't know a whole bunch about the Gower line myself. In England there was an Abell Gower of Boulton, parish of St. Johns Bedwaedine, county Gloucester, Esquire who left a will dated 30 July 1632, proved 16 Nov 1632 which names a wife Marie, and sons: Abel (eldest), William (youngest), and a daughter Elizabeth Gower. Then step children: Timothy Stampe, William Stampe, John Stampe, Marie Stampe, and Ann wife of Thomas Clent of Martley, county Worcester, Clarke. Brother in law: John Gunner of Whitney, county Oxon. Then there was an Abel Gower who was the sheriff of Henrico Co., VA and who seems to be related to Abel above in some way. His will was proved June 1689 in Henrico Co., VA. He married Jane who some believe to be a sister of John Burton of Longfield [Henrico Co., VA]. Jane married 1. William Branch 2. William Baugh Jr. 3. Abel Gower. Abel seems to have only had a daughter Tabitha who married Richard Grigg. Thomas Grendon of Westover Parish, Charles City Co., VA left a will dated 1683/4 which mentions Wm. Randolph of Henrico and Able Gower of VA, Thomas Gower of Edmington. There is a letter from William Byrd to Thomas Gower telling him that his brother is ill, has been unable to walk or ride far and is a decaying conditioin. This is on April 16, 1688. Grendon's will also mentions Wm. Byrd Jr. It seems to be that the Able and Thomas in Grendon's will are definately brothers. A Mary Dennis wife of Richard Dennis is an heir-at-law of the Henrico Abel. Then there is an early will [1646] in Northampton Co., VA of Ann Hawkins/Hookings widow of Wm. which mentions William Gower, a kinsman. Her will also mentions John Dandy and his ward Francis Harvey. Wm. Hookings will mentioned John Dennis. Then there is this round about connection to the Ligons: Maj. Wm. Farrar son of Col. Wm. and Mary Farrar b. 1657 m. 1. Priscilla daughter of William Baugh Jr. and Jane (BURTON?) Branch Baugh Gower; m. 2. Mary widow of Wm. LIGON. I have this information as a byproduct of working on my Dandy/Dendy line and my husband's Burton line. I would think that there is a connection between all the Gowers, but I don't know what it is, nor do I know how your Gowers fit in. Kathy
Jean Scarlett: Thanks for your Gower post. I'm going to have to dig out the Gower file later today and get back to you tonight on this. I'm especially interested in Abel Gower who was the grandfather of Dennis Gower. The Gowers are flirting around the Randolphs and Ishams. It is interesting to see how the Gower line merges with the Nevilles line. Here's what I think I notice and maybe Ren was looking, too, and that is I don't see any Presleys upstream in this line. For some time we have been kicking around the topic of Presleys in the various Nevilles lines and wondering why they turn up in so many of the different lines. Maybe it is a semi-popular name, maybe they are naming after a famous Neville--Presley of the Revolution. Part of what brought this up is the my Solomon Neville line is very chummy with the George Nevill line in Montgomery Co., TN. The thought is that they may be related in some way that they knew about, but we do not. Kathy
Jean, Do you have any information on 18th Century siblings, someone named Edward in particular? He lived in Cecil Co., MD as early as 1721 and died there in 1756. I sure enjoyed the lineage through the Ligons and Harrises back through the Percy and Neville family. Not only do I descend from John Neville of the Ark & Dove in MD, but through my mother (Hazel Harris Gohr) I also descend back to Capt. Thomas Harris that was on her posting. Thus I trace back to the same early Neville lineage that she shows. Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

Jean Scarlett: Never fear, there are now at least two of us campaigning for William Neville. I think the wife of William Neville will continue to elude us. Have you made any progress on the Parks line?! Kathy
Jean Scarlett: How does your husband come down off of the William Nevill line? I'm from Jesse Nevill m. Elizabeth Parks-->Solomon Nevill m. Susanna Walton-->Granderson D. Nevill m. lots of women with bad character judgement. Kathy ppskdd2@airmail.net

Hi Everyone, I"m new to the list but have been in other Surname list so no how they work. Was reading a message from Alice to Missi about a Glen Gohr's message offering to copy the book "A 370 Years of Neville's". Can someone please tell me how to get ahold of this person. I am very interested as I have several pages already from different people and would like the whole thing. Appreciate any help anyone can give me. It is my understanding that Missi has already told you about some of the work that I have been doing on Nevilles. Come to find out while researching my husbands line in North Carolina I have discovered Neville's in my line but back in the 1200 thru 1400's. The problem that I am having and would like to know if anyone can help is: Who are the parents of Lee's 7th Gr.Grandparents: William NEVILLE, d. bef 25 Apr 1665 in VA, marr Unknown Wife. William is supposdily the first Neville in the Isle of Wight and Nansemond area (according to Historical Southern Families, Vol.2, by John Bennett Boddie.) I really don't know if this is correct or not. There are strong possiblities that he was a brother to John in "A 370 " but am not sure of the possibilities. Any help would be greatly appreicated. I will more than happily check what I have on my computer for any information to help and exchange info. Looking forward to hearing from any of you. Jean Scarlett
Glenn Gohr repeated Tom Dirksen's query to the Bohannon List. Here is some information from my files which may help answer some of the questions. This is cut and pasted from a narrative file prepared in Works for Windows 4.0. I will be happy to e-mail the entire file, with source documentation to anyone who can handle Works. BillScroggins@msn.com JOSEPH BOHANNON Born probably c1690 Died between 23 Nov 1738 and 26 Feb 1738/9 Prince William County, Virginia Married Elizabeth Neville c1719 Born 1691 Died after 13 Dec 1774 Children (order of birth uncertain): John Bohannon b. 1720 d. 1793 m. William Bohannon b. 19 Nov 1730 Middlesex County, Virginia d. m. (Rachel Turley?) The parents of Joseph Bohannon (Bohanon, Bohanan, Buchanan) of Middlesex and Prince William counties, Virginia, have not been proved but he probably was a son of either John or Joseph Bohannon who resided in Gloucester County, Virginia, in 1704. Elizabeth Neville was a daughter of John Neville and Elizabeth Bohannon. The surviving sons of Joseph Bohannon and Elizabeth Neville of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, are named in his will dated 23 November 1738 and proved on 26 February 1738/9. The birth dates of four of their children are among the baptismal records of Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia: Nevill Son of Joseph & Elizabeth Bohannon born June ye 1 baptized June 28 1724 George Son of Joseph & Elizabeth Bohannon born August ye 20 baptized 1726 Sarah daughter of Joseph & Eliza Bohannon born August ye 5 baptized August ye 25 1728 William Son of Joseph & Eliza Bohannon born Novemr ye 19 baptized Novemr ye 30 1730 John Bohannon and Elizabeth Neville, who was born in 1691, had a son John Bohannon (Buchanan), who was born in 1720 and died in 1793. The maiden name of his wife Elizabeth probably was Haynie since they named a son William Haynie Bohannon (Buchanan). He was born in 1752, married Frances Stribling and died in 1820. It is not known whether Joseph Bohannon was born before John or not, but it seems likely that he was born about 1722. In their father's will John is named first, followed by Joseph and the others. Joseph Bohannon and Elizabeth Neville probably moved to Prince William County shortly after the birth of their son William in 1730. On 03 June 1730, George Neville (Neavil) obtained a warrant for 275 acres of land in Prince William County that was surveyed for him on 31 August 1730. It adjoined the Kettle Run tract of Colonel Carter and lands of William Hackney, Colonel Page, Baldwin and Mr. Debut. George Neville was assignee of William Owen for 181 acres in Prince William County on the South Fork of Bull Run, Catlet's Branch, Bull Run Mountain, drains of Broad Run and the north end of Mother Leather Coat Mountain. The tract had been warranted to Owen on 12 July 1739 and surveyed on 06 March 1739/40. It adjoined land of John Glasscock. On 31 October 1743 George Neville (Neavil) had 183 acres in Prince William County surveyed for him. The tract was on Mother Leather Coat Mountain on Catlet's Branch and adjoined his own land. The land on Broad Run and Mother Leather Coat Mountain fell into Fauquier County when it was formed from Prince William County in 1759. A warrant for land in that location, dated 25 February 1764, which was surveyed on 12 March 1770 for Mr. Yelverton Peyton, adjoined land of Solomon Jones which had been taken up by Captain Neville. Joseph Bohannon resided in Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, Virginia, when he made his will in 1738: In the name of God Amen I Joseph Buchanan of Prince Wm County and parish of Hamilton being sick and weak in body of sound and perfect sence and memory blessed be God for the same Imprimis I comitt my Soul unto the hands of God that gave it me my body I committ to the Earth to be buried in decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my Exors hereafter named hopeing thro the meretorious death and passion of my blessed Lord and Saviour to receive full & free pardon of all my sins Imprimis after my debts are paid and my funeral charges also I bequeath as follows Item I give devise and bequeath to my loving wife Elizabeth Buchanan all my Estate both real and personal during her natural life or widdowhood and after that my moveables to be equally divided amongst my children my land to be equally divided amongst my sons (vizt) John Buchanan Joseph Buchanan Neavill Buchanan Wm Buchanan George Buchanan all to be distributed by my loving wife as aforesd whom I make and ordain as my whole and sole Executrix together with my loving brothers Georg Neavill and Joseph Minter my Executors and I hereby declare this to be my last will and testament makeing void hereby all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made In testimony whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and affixed my seale this 23d day of November 1738 In presence of us Joseph Buchanan (Seal) Thomas Davies her Ester X Stone mark her Judith X Davies mark At a Court held for Prince William County February 26h 1738 This will was presented in Court by Elizabeth Buchanan the Executrix therein named who made oath thereto & the same also being proved by the Oaths of the witnesses to it Subscribed was admitted to Record, and on the motion of the said Executrix & her performing what is usual in such cases Certificate was granted her for obtaining a probate thereof in due form Ex Test Catesby Cocke Cl Cur Know all men by these presents that we Elizabeth Buchanan George Nevil & Joseph Minter are held and firmly bound unto Dennis McCarty Gent the first Justice in the Comission of the Peace for Prince William County for and in behalf and for the sole use & behoof of the Justices of the said County and their Successors in the sum of three hundred pounds Currt. money to be paid to the said Dennis McCarty his Executors Admrs and Assigns to the which payment well & truly to be made we bind our selves & every of us our & every of our heirs Executors and Admrs jointly & severally firmly by these presents Sealed with our Seals dated the XXVIth day of February 1738 The Condition of this Obligation is such that if the abovebound Elizabeth Buchanan Executx. of the last will and testament of Joseph Buchanan deceased do make or cause to be made a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased which have or shall come to the hands possession or knowledge of the said Executrix or into the hands possession or knowledge of any other person or persons for her and the same so made do exhibit or cause to be exhibited into the County Court of Prince William at such time as she shall be thereunto required by the said Court and the same Goods Chattels & Credits and all other the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased at the time of his death which at any time after shall come to the hands or possession of any other person or persons for her do well & truly Administer according to Law and further do make a just and true account of her actings & doings therein when thereto required by the said Court and also do well & truly pay and deliver all the Legacy's contained & specified in the said Testament as far as the said Goods Chattels & Credits will thereunto extend and the Law shall charge then this Obligation to be void and of none effect otherwise to remain in full force and virtue Sealed and Delivered Signees in the presence of Elizabeth E Buchanan (Seal) Jno Bowie George Neavill (Seal) Joseph Minter (Seal) At a Court held for Prince William County February 26h. 1738 Elizabeth Buchanan George Nevil & Joseph Minter acknowledged this bond to be their Act & deed and it was Ordered to be Recorded Test Catesby Cocke Cl Cur The probate date of 26 February 1738 for a will written on 23 November 1738 is correct under the calendar of the time, when the year began and ended in March. The identification of George Neville and Joseph Minter as brothers must be interpreted to mean brothers-in-law. The wife of Joseph Minter apparently was a sister of Joseph Bohannon since she does not appear in family records as a sister of Elizabeth Neville Bohannon. Her name was Mary. [more like this]
Tom: I will respond on some of your questions asap. I've been working midnight shift two weeks, and not keeping up here. I'll try to get to it in the next day or so... Jeanne Barton
Hi group......while were kicking around old J. B. Neville's <370>, and THANK YOU GLENN for taking the time to make this book available to the group, I keep thinking the success of that book was because the members submitted their family histories which JB and others made available to their society and to the world. Now I'm not suggesting that someone start another society but seems to me, each of us has valuable "Neville" and other affiliated lines in their possession with all the good stuff like birth and death dates, places of residences etc. and most of us do not know the close nitty-gritty details of each others lines. Wouldn't it be a pretty simple thing to submit our "lines" to someone in the group and have the information copied for and submitted to the group every once in awhile so each of us has a little bit of history not generally known. One of these days, one of us, perhaps some of us are going to publish a book for their families, Libraries or what have you. I know that I started with two pages handed down to me by my grandfather and have over 10,000 Neville's from various places in my data base, and I certainly plan on getting this in some order for my children and sending copies to some of the Libraries down the line. Just thinking out loud. Our little group is growing and we each have so much information that we have acquired while tracing our own lines, that it seems a shame not to get this pile of "stuff" together and make each other aware once in awhile. Kick it around?.......Ren
Hi Tom...I won't be able to add much other than to agree with you and add a couple of detours. Believe mosst of us show Elizabeth Neville Falkner as the dau. of John Neville b: 1661 (dates differ) and Elizabeth Bohannan. My dates on John are (1661-1733) and didn't look in my notes to see if that is valid. As to the children of Elizabeth Neville m. Joseph Bohannan, I to show those children with the following birth dates: John 1720 William 6-1-1724 George 8-20-1726 Sarah 8-5-1728 William 11-19-1730 I also have an additional child (Joseph) no dates. Don't know where these dates came from, perhaps JP, who knows even if they are close. As I said, just throwing this out there as information I have picked up somewhere. As to Lucy Thomas, can't help there other than do not show her as the widow Thomas. I'm sure someone in the group will be more exact......take care......Ren Neville
This is another repeat message, just where my first attempt landed, I know not. I believe I have the process down such that you will receive this effort. JP Barton on 6/21/97 mentioned Deed Abstracts of Prince William county, 1745-49, as follows: "To all to whom....Know ye that we Thomas FALKNER and Elizabeth his wife of Fairfax Co.....our loving sons Neavill and William BUCHANAN of Prince Wm. Co....etc." Question 1. Is Elizabeth FALKNER a former NEVILLE and if so, is she the daughter, born 1691 to John NEVILLE (1662 - ca 1730, these dates differ with the person doing the quoting) and Elizabeth BOHANNON NEVILLE? Question 2. As to John NEVILLE, above, do we know his exact dates or are we still searching? I do have an Elizabeth Neville married to a Joseph BUCHANAN or BOHANNAN with children as follows: John, 1720 Nevill, 1724 George, 1726 Sarah, 1728 William, 1730 These children fit with the baptism data provided by JP except I have on additional child--John, 1720. Further, only Nevill and William received land as per JP. Question 3. Did the other children die before the land deeding? Anyone else have John? (I know, that's two questions in one.) Question 4. When did Joseph BUCHANAN die and when did Elizabeth marry Thomas FALKNER? Finally, you guys have sure been busy sending messages this weekend. Best wishes, Tom Dirksen

Hi, I sent this out some days ago but did not see it posted, guess I (again) pushed the wrong button or some such. Sorry about that!. First, I enjoyed the information on George Neville 1695 - 1774 and on Elizabeth Neville, daughter of John Neville. These are part of my families and I will compare to my data once a visiting granddaughter returns home and my life settles back a bit. Second, you asked about James Neville and Lucy Thomas. I have just a bit to add and this is not proven, just hand me downs from a cousin and I know not where she heard it. James Neville, B. 1686 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia and died 1752 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was a Captain in the Virginia Colonial Militia in Goochland County, Virginia in 1740 and a Justice in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1744. He married first, the Widow Keen and had four children. He then married the Widow, Lucy Thomas and had six children. Question: do we know if Lucy was a widow or did I slip up in note taking somewhere? Question: do you have information on the ten children--I believe I have some but that will await our returning Amanda home to her parents?
