    1. Any Canadian Neville roots, especially Windsor Ont.

    3. Hi guys and gals, First I'd like to say I'm only a recent subscriber but your discussion group seems very friendly and informative.Especially informative more recently on ancesters of a particular line of NEVILLES who must have settled in Virginia or New England coastal states. The info accumulated on these folks seem to stretch back to medieval periods.I'm envious of course, maybe there's a slim chance I could be connected to this pedigree be fore they emmigrated or even through my GGGgrand father THOMAS who might have migrated from the U.S. but not likely. So, since I have not yet uncovered the origin of my ancesters other than Ireland in general I pose my querries giving what info I have authenticated for the most part north of the U.S. border. I do however have some American cousins who I know little of and will list some info now along with some southern Ontario, Canadian stuff so if there are any other Canadian NEVILLE genealogists please take a look. This info is vague but is all my mother can remember of these families from her youth. If this is too long already just delete me now,I'll understand. FRANCIS NEVILLE b.abt.1893 m. 1st MARY ALICE CALWELL Feb.19,1917 2nd MARTHA ? FRANCIS and MARY died and were buried in Detroit Mich. I know of only one child KENNETH who was in the Navy(American I assume) LORETTA NEVILLE b.abt.1889 m. LEO HANLON buried in Detroit Mich. I have no children listed for this couple. CATHERINE NEVILLE b.abt.1900 m.ALFRED O'GRADY ("Home Child" who discovered twin still in Ireland) CATHERINE died and is buried in Detroit Mich. I should be able to get more info on this family as I've recently been in contact with one of thier children who lives in Maryland. Children: JAMES (who was a chef) THERESA m. 1st ? VISSON PATRICIA (who was/is an R.N.) m. DON GLEASON RAYMOND (who was a C.G.A. and I believe is deceased) Canadians: AMBROSE NEVILLE b.abt.1895 m. SADIE CONNELLY buried in Windsor Ont. Can. Children: MAURICE LAWRENCE RITA DARLENE m. 1st GEORGE ? 2nd ? MULLIGAN AMBROSE Jr. MARTIN WILFRED NEVILLE (Wilf) b.abt1898 m. ALICE BRIZZARD buried Peterborough, Ont. Children: PETER JOHN PAULINE m. FLORIMOND LASSALLE GERARD THERESA m. JOSEPH BELANGER JOSEPH AGNES FRANCIS , CATHERINE, MARTIN and AMBROSE were all children of THOMAS NEVILLE and CATHERINE TIERNEY and were born in ROSS Twp. Renfrew Cnty.,Ont. PETER V. NEVILLE b.Aug.13,1890 d.1960 m. MURIEL McCARTY (probably buried in Ottawa) Was supposedly a lawyer or judge in Ottawa and I'm hoping this is true. As a public notery much info would be available. Children: LIONEL SMYTH (deceased) VINCENT m. BETTY ? PETER was the son of MICHAEL NEVILLE and CATHERINE DUNLOP who had 12 other children including THOMAS mentioned in the next generation above. Thank you for your interest. Christopher Chapeski.

    2. Does anyone know if there is list of passengers aboard the Ark and the Dove currently floating around the world wide web? I have conducted numerous searches without success, and am actually reaching the point where I shell out for a long distance phone call to Maryland libraries. Thank you. 2. In a message dated 97-07-17 01:10:59 EDT, you write: << Steward Nevill does not ring a bell with me. Did you come across him on the census...do you have an approx. birth date and place for him? I'm looking for three Nevill boys born between 1835 and 1840, probably in TN who are missing sons of Granderson Dandridge Nevill of Montgomery/Dickson Co., TN. An unattached Nevill male is just what I'm looking for. That doesn't sound quite right, does it?! Kathy >> Kathy, hi and thanks for your quick response. The Nevill I found came by pure happenstance, i was recording Tingle and Jones data for Henry County Ky. The writing is awful...(the first person recording the register had lovely writing, about halfway through someone comes along who should NEVER have been permitted to make records...He misspells names right and left, and scratches like a chicken on the page. Worst of all, he meesed up one place and a whole page has had one column XXed out and rewritten in tiny handwriting along the margin. Its awful. So STEWARD could be Stavord or something else entirely, Steward seemed the likeliest approximation. Everything I took down came out of the microfilms at the library. Nmissi, who gets a headache everytime she sees a microfilm machine.

    1. found something odd at the library
    2. Hello everybody. I have been compiling birth, death, and marriage record on the pertinent names in Henry County Ky. Well, I have found something odd. A rather late spelling of NEVILL, where there seem to be no other Nevill(e)s. Lookie here: FRANCES A. NEVILL, born July 20 1855 to STEWARD?( hard to read, may have been something else) NEVILL and wife ANN TINGLE. I am tracing my Tingle lines, so this intrigued me especially. I know my own Neville line in Henry County begins with John R. Jones' daughter Mary Jane Jones, does anyone know of a Nevill line that went there also? Perhaps a Nevill went with his Jones cousin, who knows? I am just curious, as STEWARD, if that is the name, doesnt appear in any of my research. And there literally were no other Nevills born, buried, or married in Henry County during the years 1852-1858.(This is all my lists span, all that the local library stocked.) And I would love to connect Ann to my other Tingles, I am trying to build a database on this unusual (and completely entangled into my family lines) surname. Nmissi, pondering inbred ancestry.

    1. JOHN NEVILLE/RICHARD NEVILLE
    2. Ren Neville
    3. Hi Jan...... Lets see: 1. J.B. Neville <370> does make reference to John Neville being the Sheriff at Winchester in 1755, although I don't believe is sez Winchester where, but we'll conceed Virginia. 2. I haven't seen the reference 1761 of John Neville of Frederick Co., makes a deed to lot in Winchester town. Guess according to Gene, Winchester is the county seat of Frederick Co., VA. 3. Richard Neville, defendant. One might recall the discussion concerning John Neville's reported brothers, Benjamin and Richard whom some say there has been no proof of and that they could be "Newells". Also, there was something published that Richard Nevitt married one Ann Burroughs, not Richard Neville. Looks like ordering the copy of that suit from Winchester is he only way to answer this question. Was Richard a Nevitt, Neville or perhaps Newell, or none of the above. Jan, if you order, please advise (as I'm sure you will). Perhaps this is one of those missing keys. Believe Shirley Wilcox has never been able to prove Benjamin and Richard and she thinks they were Newells. I believe the only time I have seen John Neville listed as the sheriff of Winchester VA, is in JB's book. John was born in VA, married on 8-24-1754 but I don't know where, and settled after the Rev War in PA where he is buried in Pittsburg. It would seem posible that he could have been the Sheriff the year after his marriage, then went on to fight the bad guys, then to Ft. Pitt etc. Perhaps to substantiate the posible claim of Sheriff, he was in Winchester VA: 4. John Neville's children were all reportedly born in Winchester VA. from 1755 to 1763. That should make him a resident, however, who knows about the Sheriff. I don't know of a George Neville, sheriff that settled in Winchester and went on to be a Capt., Co., and Brevet General. I have to agree with you Jan, this is John, not Geroge. BIG FAVOR. Check those birth dates again from John Neville's bible. I have: Susannah b: 10-9-1759 and dying the same day. It is possible this was 10-9-1757, but I doubt that it was two year exactly from birth to death (10-9-1757 to 10-9-1759). Susannah (2) I show born on 10-14-1763 and died three weeks later on 11-9-1763 rather than being born of 10-14-1760. Probably not important, but would like for you to check those dates so I can make corrections. Milly and Amelia were twins, both born 4-4-1763 (in winchester). Milly died at birth or in infancy, Amelia (not Milly) went on to marry Isaac Craig (at least this is the way I have picked it up) 5. As to John Hawkins. I have not direct knowledge of him however a "Hawkins" married into the "Craig" line off of John, which could be your John Hawkins. (sounds good to me!) 6. In review of your Oldham line by John Hawkins, this is what I have in my base....don't ask me where it came from, but the info looks correct. Jan.......once again, looks like were going to have to get that law suit. I'd sure like to know who this Richard Neville is. Sure would be simple to have him a Neville rather than a Nevitt or Newell..take care and "thank you very much" for sharing your info......cya -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ren and Judy Neville vom Junggesellental Rottweilers Wörterbuch Publishing 510-432-3323 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field....shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30

    3. Howdy Bill (and Neville cousins): Thanks so much for the quick response and helpful info regarding Edward Neville and descendants. A snail-cousin of mine has been researching this line and a couple of others, and I'll contact him again about the sources so I can answer your questions with a little more assurance. I only received the lineages from him, and since I was sending one note, I added the "feeler". (Perhaps I should have waited for more info before posting??) 1. Re: RICHARD NEVILLE
    2. Hello Group, I have some more questions regarding the following references I found in a loose file in the Kentucky Historical Society. The research on the information in the file was done, at least in part, in late 1800's by John Hawkins. These are the same references I listed yesterday. Quoting: _________________________________________ 1755 George Neville was engaged in Braddock's expedition, was afterward settled near Winchester, where he was Sheriff. Subsequently Captain, Colonel, and Brevet Brigadier General. [Note correction below - Jan) 1761 John Neville, Frederick County, makes deed to lot in Winchester town. 1762 (or 1767) John Neville, Winchester, VA, appears in court as plaintiff Richard Neville as defendant John Neville is held responsible to his brothers for the interest in certain lands being 20 acres "taken up" by their father in his life time, and not disposed of by him in his will. It appears by the record that "some years" had passed since the death of their father. Record does not state location of land. __________________________________ After Ren's reply related to my query yesterday concerning the above notes, I looked in Joseph B. Neville's book (370 Year History of One Neville Family) to see what he had to say about the Nevilles around Winchester (VA). First of all, in JB's book, he states that John Neville served under George Washington in General Braddock's expedition in 1755, after which he became sheriff in Winchester (p. 20). The information I found at the KY Historical Society seems to agree on every point except the name. JB has John while Mr. Hawkins' notes show George. Hawkins' notes were working notes, and in them he must have inadvertly listed the wrong name. The source for JB's information about John was Engle's Pennsylvania Genealogies, which Mr. Hawkins also lists for a reference. More interesting, however, is the idea that the above John in Winchester was General John, father of Presley, according to JB's book (p. 20). If so, it would seem likely that he was the John involved in the above suit with Richard Neville over the distribution of John's father's property. We do need to look at this suit to see what we can learn about the Nevilles in Winchester, since it may give us some important facts about family relationships. If no one has access to Winchester records, I will work on ordering a copy of the suit from the county where Winchester was located at that time. It just occured to me that I am responding to my own query. Does this action fall in the same category as talking to and answering oneself? If so, please don't tell my daughter. I would like a few more years of babysitting privileges with the WSGS (That's World's Sweetest Grandson, Tom). Jan

    3. Hi Jan........THANK YOU for all the information, your knocking on my door. I'm going to have to get into my files to try and address some of your questions, but one of the problems I've faced on this line, along with others is the reference to John Neville's father being one Richard Neville, m. Ann Bouroughs. You will see Johns father also mentioned as Geroge Neville m. Ann Bouroughs (popular gal). Here is what I have and can prove. Presley Neville m. Nancy Morgan (my ancestor and founder of all the Morgan Nevilles) His father was Gen John Neville which you are familiar with, the guy who lost all his belongings while backing up the Whiskey Tax. We know by letter that Joseph Neville Sr. b: 1707 as mentioned in JB's book, who died in Moorefield, Hardy Co. VA. now W. VA. was a listed as the father of Gen John (my ancestor) and Gen Joseph m. Agness Nancy Brown. These letters were written by Joseph Sr. to Cuthbert Bullitt regarding some land dispute and he mentions names. I've got a copy of a couple of these letters, but there are reportedly 13 letters on file in the Hardy County Library which I have a letter into with offer of bribe to get copies along with any info concerning the Moorefield, Hardy Co. now W. VA Nevilles. At his point, I think we can rule out Richard as father of this John Neville. Who knows how many darn John Neville's there were running around. I would love to see proof that Joseph Neville Sr. b: 1707, d: Moorefield 1792+/- father was John Neville b: 1661. I have a problem with Boogher from here on back. On the surface, most of the info you sent looks good and correct. Will get into it tomarrow and see what comes up. I'm going by memory, so hope I have all the players in place. If I don't, group, remember to respect your elders, so don't give me a hard time, I cry easy.....Jan, glad your finals are behind you, good to have you back on line.........Ren ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ren and Judy Neville vom Junggesellental Rottweilers Wörterbuch Publishing 510-432-3323 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field....shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30

    2. Hello Ren and group, I am a little behind on my correspondence. I got busy giving finals in summer school and then took a little vacation. In going through some papers, I found a file I had copied at the Kentucky Historical Society some years ago. Ren, apparently the person who compiled the information in 1899 was a descendant of your John Neville line since most of the information relates to John Neville. One reason I copied the file was because it predated the Booger information and had some differences. Since the researcher was not influenced by Booger's research, I thought I might find a clue to how Neville thought their lineage shaped up in pre-Booger days. Much of the information was gathered on a research trip to Washington, DC. ___________________________________ Quoting from one page as follows: Washington, DC May 24 or 2-4, 1899 Went this date to the Congressional Library and examined some books giving account of the Neville family. Isaac Craig Febry. 1st 1785 [The above variations in the spelling of the Neville/Neavill/Nevill surname are copied as found in Mr. Hawkins notes - Jan] __________________________________________ On another page is the following information, but no source is listed: John Neville, son of Richard Neville and Ann Burroughts, a cousin of Lord Fairfax on Occoquan (?) River. John Neville married Winnefred oldham descended from John Oldham emigrated in 1635. his son Thomas Oldham, Father of Col. Samuel Oldham of Westmoreland Co., Va. married Elizabeth Newton, their son married Ann Conway, and their daughter Winnefred married Genl. John Neville. [Does anyone know what source Mr. Hawkins was using for this information? - Jan) ____________________________________________ Mr. Hawkins also searched records in several VA counties where Nevilles are found and listed these by dates from 1731 through 1786. Most are deeds or records which those of you who have searched in VA would have found. However, one caught my attention because I do not remember having seen a reference on Richard Nevill in connection with John Neville in Winchester, VA. I will list all of the Winchester Co. information to give a context: 1731 "It is stated in Irving's Life of Washington that first station was at a lodge in the wilderness at the Stewards or Bartiff (?) of Lord Halifax about 12 miles from Winchester, near the Shenandoah." 1755 George Neville was engaged in Braddock's expedition, was afterward settled near Winchester, where he was Sheriff. Subsequently Captain, Colonel, and Brevet Brigadier General. 1761 John Neville, Frederick County, makes deed to lot in Winchester town. _____________________________________________ The above record seems important. Did General John Neville live in Winchester? Who is Richard? There is a record of a Richard Nevill who was a Loyalist during Rev. War. I think he served with Pennsylvainia company. I will look up the reference if anyone wants it. The above case in Winchester should list the name of the father and brothers of John. Can anyone get copies of the proceedings? Jan

    3. Hi folks, tried accessing the archives as per the instructions of two or so days ago, but with no results. Will try this again, but wanted to pass along these results. I sent to the archives retrieval as per instructed and got back the following: File volume97/* is currently not available. N.B. Filenames are case sensitive! Later last evening while lost on "webcrawler" to which I looked for "Maiser", I found some directions reported as "New" and reportedly following the big spamming of some months ago. Directions were to send to: MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu the following message(s): SEND LIST1.TXT SEND LIST2.TXT, etc though 5 EXIT then to line down ore one or more lines which was reported as ruling out the autosignature problem. Result, nothing, no error message, no return message, big zip. Maybe the "New" information is not so new and Maiser is defunct. Anyone else have better luck? Regards, Tom Dirksen

    3. Hi there sports fan, I truly enjoy the information passing this way and appreciate your filling in some of my unknows that have existed far too long in my lineage. Glenn Gohr just sent us his family line and I will use his format to indicate mine--a compilation of information provided mainly by three first cousins: Cousin Lois, Cousin Harriet and to some extent by myself as prepared for our Neville Cousins' Reunion held every three years in DuQuoin, Illinois, about the time of the Perry County Fair. We run maybe 70-100 folks for an all day event, gathering for dinner the evening before. As kids our parents dragged us to the grandparents for a Sunday dinner at least once a year, the last time that happened maybe 1950-52 or so. Some of the grandkids (my generation) initiated the current event maybe nine years ago. A good time together. No one has to be dragged into attending. In the following, I have attempted placing that information provided by Glenn's which is different from my materials in ( ) so you can determine just where I stand. 3. Does this John Nevil belong in the William Nevill of Isle of Wight Co., VA? I ask because of the "Godwin" in Elizabeth's name. Her maiden name? Middle name? Jesse Nevill recycles the Goodwin name among his children. It occurs to me that the wife, Susannah Edwards, may be a Nevill. Or a Goodwin.
