    1. Ark and Dove; notes

    3. Ref list of Ark & Dove passengers: No list of the Ark & Dove passengers survives. The list was compiled through land records and records of claims for land for transporting passengers. Most surnames have a variety of spellings - this had more to do with the clerks then the person of name. The "Gentlemen Adventurers" were recorded, as they were investors in the settlement. Richard Nevitt on this list is often stated as being a Richard Nevill. John Nevill was transported by Leonard Calvert, Esq., younger bro. of Cecilius (Cecil), Lord Baltimore, and leader/Governor of the settlement/St Mary's. The only confirmed crew were - John Boulter, purser and steward of the Ark [the passenger ship] On the Dove [supply ship] - John Curke, helper / John Games / Richard Kenton, boatswain / Samuel Lawson / Nicholas Perrie, helper / ____ Warreloe, mate / Richard Orchard, master. The Ark and Dove stopped Feb 27th, 1633/4 at Jamestown, Va. "They also had some passendgers to land in VA, so presumably enroute the Ark had taken on a few travelers at Barbadoes or St Kitts whose destination was Va." It also seems logical to presume some Virginians may have boarded the Ark, although there is few to none records of this. It seems reasonable that Calvert would want a few good men familar with the Indians and geography of the region, and perhaps an interpreter... It is possible/probable that while they were at VA Thomas Cornwalys engaged Cuthbert Fenwick to be his secretary and steward. Capt Wm Claybourne of VA had set up a trade settlement on Kent Isle, now MD. The Ark & Dove left Point Comfort, VA Mar 3rd, and sailed up the Chesapeake until they reached the Potomac. The adventurers delayed their actually landing, checking the safety ref. Indians, and choosing the area for settlement, after making an agreement with the Indians. 25 March 1634 [new years day] the first day of spring and Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin, the Ark and Dove landed on St Clement's Island, where thanksgiving prayers were offered by the two priests - Father Altham and Father White, Roman Catholics. Anyone who has dabbled in the Va records of the same period, will recognize many of the above names, including - Calvert, Gerard, Medcalf, Draper, Gilbert, Allen, Middleton, Beane, Hilliard, Martin, Hallowes, Sherley, Rabnett (Rabinett/Robinett), Fenwick, Duke, Orchard, Perry... and of course, the names too common to discern - Smith, Price, etc. Not only are they found in the Tidewater area surrounding the Jamestown settlement, but across the Potomac from St Marys/Charles Co., Md., in Northumberland/Westmoreland Va.

    2. Ren Neville
    3. Help! Going to need some assistance on this guy (thanks Glenn!) Was John of Gaunt married to both Blanche Plantagenet and Catherine of Hainault? Do I have either or correct? What was John of Gaunt's surname, or better yet, what was his parents name. I know I have him doubled in my data base under John of Gaunt which I'd like to merge, but am also suspect that I also have him buried somewhere under his surname. If anyone has a quick answer, would appreciate same to save me a trip to the Library......THANK YOU! Now isn't this fun! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ren and Judy Neville vom Junggesellental Rottweilers Wörterbuch Publishing 510-432-3323 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field....shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30

    2. Ren Neville
    3. Owen-Glenn and others. Now don't you come up with some goodies, what do you do, stay up all night! Question: Unless my records are all screwed up, Edward Neville b: 1412 had two children by the name of Catherine. One by Elizabeth Beauchamp b: 1442, another by his other wife Catherine Howard b:1459 who married Robert Tanfield III (?) and then there is George Neville b: 1414, son of Ralph Neville and Joan Beaufort who had the Catherine you guys are talking about b: (?) who married Oliver Sutton. I wish I had more than just skeleton info on these people. I did not know that Catherine, dau. of George was an item with Oliver Sutton. Would be interesting to see the line from there. Now as to Edward Neville, brother to George who shared the same wife did the first Catherine born of Elizabeth Beauchamp in 1442 die or did he decide he just liked the name of Catherine (sorta like George Foremans kids, all 8 named George, or something like that) Do I have all my Catherines in the rights boxes, does anybody know the birth date of Georges Catherine whom married Oliver Sutton. Any help for this old man is appreciated! Take care.........Ren ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ren and Judy Neville vom Junggesellental Rottweilers Wörterbuch Publishing 510-432-3323 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field....shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30

    3. From some handwritten notes of mine I find this: Listed in the IGI index is a Brigett THORNEBY who married John Bateson on 12 Nov. 1639 at Barnesley, Yorkshire. (Thorneby could be another variant of our Bridget Thoresby who married John Neville of the Ark and Dove.) From LDS IGI Batch P007151 Serial Sheet 3425: Nevill, John christened 8 Feb. 1619 at St. Peter Parish at Bolton, Lancashire, England; son of Thomas Nevell. From LDS IGI Batch 007081 Serial Sheet 2026: Nevill, John christened 14 March 1619 at Saint Mary Parish at Blackburn, England; son of John Nevell. I've not been able to check any further on the above references. Possibly someone will want to check out these batch #s for more information as the Two John Nevills are about the right age to be our John of the Ark and Dove. Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

(It appears also on p. 66 that his younger brother, Edward Neville, Baron of Abergavenny, who died 18 Oct. 1476 was also married to Elizabeth Beauchamp after his brother's death. Edward Nevill also married 2nd to Catherine Howard.) George Nevill, Baron Latimer and his brother Edward Nevill, Baron of Abergavenny, are 2 out of the 14 children listed for Ralph de Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland, K.G. (Knight of the Garter), who died 21 Oct. 1426 and his 2nd wife, Joan Beaufort who d. 13 Nov. 1440. All 14 children were by Joan Beaufort. Joan was the daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster; was a half-sister of King Henry IV and of Philippa Plantagent, wife of John, King of Portugal. Joan was also the granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Ralph de Nevill, was the son of Sir John de Nevill (d. 17 Oct. 1389 at Newcastle) and his wife Maud Percy. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1984. It gives a very detailed description of the boat trip to Maryland, early life in Maryland, and also gives a list of the passengers and then gives biographical information on each family liested. Quite a bit about the early Maryland Nevilles is included there. Harry Wright Newman wrote several other books pertaining to his own ancestral family lines. Many of them lived in early Maryland. There is also an Ark and Dove Society, which each descendant of John Neville would be eligible to join. They would surely have a list of passengers. Joe Neville sent me some info. on this society many years ago, but I never tried to join. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

    1. Re: JOHN NEVILLE/RICHARD NEVILLE
    2. Jeanne, Thank you for the response related to Frederick Co., VA. Some of the children in your references to marriages seem to belong to John Neavill (b. 1689, d. 1768 in Fauquier). John named the following children in his will (WB 1, p. 125, Fauquier Co., VA): John, Robert, Gabriel, Henry, Elizabeth Taylor, Sarah Redman, Mary Neavill, Kitty Fitzgerald, Ann Fishback, and Thomas who m. Mary Stewart. The 1767 lawsuit in Winchester, VA, shows a John Neville appearing in court as plaintiff and Richard Neville as defendant. John Neavill (d. 1768 in Fauquier Co.) could have been the plaintiff, as well as General John, the former sheriff of Winchester. (I need to verify this information by ordering a copy of the lawsuit from Frederick Co.) Do you know who Hiram Nevill's father was or anything else about Hiram? I tried, without success, to find out once before because there is a Hiram in my Misssissippi line. Since Hiram Nevill is not a name one comes across every day, I thought the fellow in Frederick Co. might be a clue to my line outside Mississippi. Thanks again for the info.
