Jean: I received your packet. Thanks. The only changes I would make to the line would be to the information on Granderson Nevill. He died after 1880 and tradition has it that he died in Tx. No tombstone has been found to date. He had four known wives: 1. Minerva Peterson who married 2. Meredith Howard. She had one child by Granderson who died young. 2. Martha E. ________. She married Granderson in 1835, and they had three sons by 1840. Names unknown. She is probably the mother of my ancestor also named Granderson D. Nevill, b. 1841 in Dickson Co., TN. She may be the Martha E. Nevels who is in Tishmingo Co., MS in 1850 with three children under the age of ten: Anderson D., Susan P., William D. Martha divorced Granderson in 1845 in Dickson Co., TN. What became of her after that is still unknown. 3. Annette Travis [McAllister's great-grandmother] who was a great- grand daughter of George Nevill of Montgomery Co., TN. She married Granderson just a week after his divorce from Martha was final. That seems to lend credibility to Martha's charge of adultery. This may also be why McAllister shys away from mentioning the other marriages. Or it may be why his grandfather Nevill does not provide him with more helpful information. She had two sons by Granderson. Have not found the divorce record for Granderson and Annette yet. She married 2. Phillip Crotzer. 4. Elizabeth Caroline __________. She is the last known wife of Granderson. In 1886 she patents a homestead in Crawford Co., AR as a widow. She and Granderson are together on the 1880 census of Crawford Co., AR. Granderson was a school teacher later in life. It his earlier life he was a farmer, horse trader, tanner [he was a partner in a tannery in Bowie Co., Tx in 1858], teamster [ran a freight line between Mt. Pleasant, TX and Jefferson, TX]. In 1873 there is a "Professor Nevills" teaching in a one room school in the Blackfork community in Scott Co., AR. Several things suggest that this Granderson: 1. Granderson D. ["Granvil"] patented a homestead in Scott Co., in 1871 and was still living there in 1873; 2. this teacher is boarding with a family, suggesting that he is a bachelor--this is probably Granderson between wives; 3. Granderson lists his occupation as teacher on the 1880 cenus; 4. McAllister's family seems to lose communication with Granderson by 1878 [when McAllister says G.D. dies], so Granderson must have been teaching before 1880. This 1878 date may indicate when Granderson moved to Crawford Co., AR. Granderson very likely had other wives and children who have not been located yet. He seems to have stayed in touch with his children throughout his lifetime--no letters have ever been discovered, though. Kathy
Jan: I just read your note about the Nevill/Newell spelling in Montgomery Co., TN. Is it possible that the handwriting makes it look like Newell? On Granvil Nevill's Texas confederate pension the name LOOKS like Newell on the front page and has been indexed that way, but it is definitely Nevill through the papers. Squint your eyes one way and looks like Nevill; squint your eyes another way and it looks like Newell. It's a swoopy V thing that they have going in their handwriting. You would have laughed your head off to have seen me spend a whole afternoon energetically chasing a Randerson Newell all over TN and MS because I was just sure he might turn out to be Granderson Nevill. Well, he was Randerson Newell!!! Kathy Kathy

Jan: I have a copy of the Granderson/Martha E. Neville divorce papers. Unfortunately, they do not mention any of the children of this marriage. Even worse, Martha only states that she married him about 1835 and does not mention where!! Boo! Hoo! Right now, I can't remember if I ever tried to obtain a copy of G.D. Nevill and Annette Travis' marriage from Robertson Co., TN. It seems like I did, but was told they had no marriage record. I need to look back through my files on that one. My memory is that neither Dickson Co. nor Montgomery Co. had divorce papers for this union. Robertson Co. TN might be the place to look for their divorce record. Kathy
Jan: Thanks for the work you've done on Crotzers and Solomon Nevill's line in Montgomery Co., TN. So far I have not found any children for the the Annette Nevels/Phillip Crotzer marriage, but there may have been one. I still have not figured out why McAllister never mentions that marriage. I don't know it there is a probate for Solomon. In a book on Gibson Co., TN I came across a reference to an administration of Solomon Nevill's estate being entered before the court in GIBSON Co., TN in 1848. That would match my Solomon Sr., but when I wrote to Gibson Co., TN, they denied having the record. I ordered the microfilm and thoroughly searched, and it really wasn't there. I am now wondering if the author of that book was working on two books at the same time and mixed up the material. I can't imagine that informatin being pulled out of thin air. Seems like the individual presenting the admin. was a Lankford. Kathy
As to question and answer #'s 264, don't believe this is correct. One of the papers I inherited from my grandfater was a list (reportedly from the family bible) of Presleys children with dates etc and neither Mildred Neville or George Frederick appear. As to Presleys relationship with Lafayette and the marriage's etc, this is correct. I am curious because it is my understanding that the SAR requires detailed proof, yet I have never seen this mentioned nor know of any one who has....interesting? jdfaulk@hop-uky.campus.mci.net wrote: > > Hello Group, > > In going through some of my papers, I found queries from "Kentucky > Kinfolks," which was a genealogy column in the Herald-Post, Louisville, Ky, > in 1936. Kathy and others of the Granville/Halifax/Orange Co., NC Nevilles, I found the following buried in my files. Jan From RECOLLECTIONS OF MY LIFE by Joseph Buckner Killebrew 1831-1906 [Killebrew is writing about his life in Montgomery Co., Tennessee - Jan] "Jo and Ben Neville were the sons of Solomon Neville who lived on the old Jo. Fort place, adjoining the lands of Mr. McMurray. Jo was a good boy, quiet but generous in his nature and with many admirable qualities. He and all the family moved to *Moscow in West Tennessee and I never knew what their subsequent lives were. Ben I only recall as a small boy coming to school with his brother." [*Moscow is in West Kentucky, not Tennessee. Jan] --------- From BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES / BALLARD COUNTY, KENTUCKY (I do not have the author's name, but I think this is one of Perrin's histories. I will get this information from the library if anyone wants it. Jan) "McD. Ferguson was born May 16, 1858, in Montgomery County, Tenn., and is the first of three children (two boys) born to John D. and Zilpha (Vaughn) Ferguson, natives of Massachusetts and Montgomery County, Tenn., respectively, and of Scotch and English origin. Zilpha Ferguson is the daughter of Granderson and Elizabeth (Nevel) Vaughn. They came to Ballard County in an early day, and settled on the farm, on part of which G. Northington now lives, and where they had purchased about 2,000 acres in all. The grandfather Vaughan came to this place in an early day, where he lived till his wife died about 1866, when he moved to Louisville, where he engaged in the tobacco business till his death, in January, 1879. The business is till run in the name of G. Vaughan & Co. He owned a number of negroes before the war, and was the architect fo his own fortune. John D. Fereguson cam to Ballard County about 1859, and settled on 550 acres in the north part, which he improved; a few years ago he moved to McCracken County, near Paducah. McD. Ferguson was reared on a farm, received a good common school education and taught one term of school. He commenced the study of law in 1879, attended a course of lectures at Louisville, Ky., and has studied with Judge Marshall since. He is now farming and living on about 600 acres owned by his mother. He cast his first presidential vote for Hancock and English." ------------ [Kathy, I know you have the following reference but am not sure if you have the details of where to find proceedings. - Jan] TENNESSEE TIDBITS/1778-1914/VOL. Kathy and others interested in Nevill families in Montgomery Co., TN, I went to the library to work on records of the George Nevill line and the Solomon Nevill line. I was amazed at the number of records they have amassed since the last time I worked in their library. After looking over what they have, I decided to do a thorough suvey of their records on all Nevills. I would like to have a clear overview of their activities in that county. In the past, I simply copied specific information or relied on what others had found in the records there. On my two visits about a week ago, I worked in the court minutes from 1797 to 1817. Already, I have copied over 100 pages of references to George Nevill (b. 1724 in VA; m. Rachel Earle, Fauquier Co., VA; lived NC and SC; d. 1811 in Montgomery Co., TN) and his sons Joseph Bargel Nevill (b. 1764), George Washington Nevill (b. 1772), and John Nevill (b. 1774), as well as some of the references to families of George's sons-in-law: Pollock, Owens, Whitfield, Killebrew, and Williams. With regard to the in-laws, I generally copied only those references dealing directly with the Nevill family. Many of the references deal with the Nevilles' roles as sheriffs of Montgomery Co. or with the juries on which they served. (A quick scan of the jury list should have been enough to convince people of that era not to offend the Nevill family - the sheriff and much of the jury were Nevills or Nevill relatives or Nevill neighbors.) Kathy, I am sorry that I did not have time to get to look up Solomon's probate record on microfilm, but I will be going back several more times this year and will get that done. I plan to move through the records in chronological order. In the court minutes through 1817, there is no mention of Solomon or any of the other Granville/Orange/Halifax Co., NC Nevill clan, not even a recording of a deed. I am listing below information I found on Crotzers who were associated with Granderson Nevill and also some Neville listings. Let me know if I can do any other look-ups in the following source. Since Katherine has been a popular number of everyone's dance card recently, I thought I'd throw this out: Katerine lived for four years after the death of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. She returned to Lincolnshire and died on May 10, 1403. She was buried by the High Alter in Lincoln Cathedral, where her son Harry Beaufort, later cardinal and chancellor, and become bishop. Katherine's tomb is there now [c. 1954], with that of her daughter Joan. John, Duke of Lancaster died on February 3, 1399 at Leicester Castle with Katherine by his side--they had been married three years. Source: Anya Seton who conducted a great deal of on site researcher for her novel, "Katherine." Kathy
All: Yes, John of Gaunt's first wife was Blanche. She was the inspiration for Chaucer's "Book of the Duchess." You "other" Nevilles descend from Katherine. She was one of Blanche's ladies-in-waiting and John's long time mistress. She seems to have had the good taste to wait until after Blanche's death [black plague] to take up with John. Chaucer's wife Phillipa was Katherine's sister. John of Gaunt m. 1. Blanche of Lancaster children: 1. Phillipa (1360-1415) m. Joao of Portugal 2. Elizabeth (1364-1426) m. 1. Earl of Pembroke 2. Hello Group, This is anouther query I am reposting. Any information is appreciated. Jan > >To what family does Philip Nevill of Washington Co., PA, during Revolutionary War belong? What was his connection to James Nevill who served in Washington Co. at same time? > >Jan 1774: Philip Nevill left Port of London. Listed residence as London, age as 24. Destination: Maryland as indentured servant. Sailed on ship Peggy. Occupation: Husbandman (farmer?). (I do not know if he arrived nor if this is the same Philip found in Washington Co., PA) > >12 May 1777: Philip Nevill listed as private in 3rd Regiment, Maryland Troops (According to one researcher, this regiment had many Charles Co., MD names in it.) (I do not know if this is the Philip Nevill found in Washington Co., PA.) > >1778 - 1783: Philip Nevill listed as a ranger on the frontier in Washington Co., PA. > >March 1782: Philip Nevill in Capt. Scott's Co., 3rd Bn. > >1 June 1782: Philip Nevill ordered on duty for defense of the frontiers. 8th class of Capt. Wm. Crawford's Co. > >No date: Philip Nevill listed in Lt. Richard Seaton's Co. for service during Rev. War. > >About 1790: Philip Nevill's daughter Mary born in Maryland. This Philip resided in Jefferson Co., Mississippi by mid-1790's. His daughter Mary married (1) Robert McFall (McPhall) by 1817 in Jefferson Co., MS and married (2) James Ashley in 1828 in Jefferson Co., MS. On 1850 census of Franklin Co., MS, she is listed as Polly Ashley and gives place of birth as Maryland. > >1794: Philip Nevill a claimant for 300 acres on Cole's Creek, 15 mi. NE of Fort Panmure (Natchez). > >1807: United States allowed William Mackey's claim to 100 acres on Bayou Pierre. Original grantee under Spanish claim for same land in 1795 listed as Philip Nevill. According to land records, the claim on Bayou Pierre appears to be the same 100 acres referred to in William Mackey's deed in 1804 which states the original claimant of 100 acres in Claiborne Co., MS, in 1791 was James Nevill. I do not know why James and Philip are both listed as original grantees for same land. >
