Kathy, The replies are not defaulting to the list, again, I just noticed. The reply was coming back to you. I have run into the same problem over and over with Nevill/Newell. I understand the squint. I have even gone as far as recreating the writing with my own hand to see if I could get a better idea. I am still working on a James and William Nevel/Newel in Yazoo Co, MS early land records. As far as Samuel Nevill/Nevell in Mont. Co., TN, goes, my vote is still out on that one. I need to see original records. As far as I know, he only turns up twice associated with Montgomery Co., TN. He is listed as Samuel Nevill on an early 1800 Mont. Co. tax list. One reference in court minutes I have surveyed thus far show a Samuel Newell. At one time, I thought Samuel Nevill might be part of your clan in Mont. Co., since he is not accounted for any other way. Then I realized that old George Nevill's father-in-law was Samuel Nevill, and I could see the possibility that he could be an unknown son of George's. Those thoughts occurred before I found the Samuel Newell reference in court minutes. I did see enough on a William Newell to know that he was always listed as Newell. Unfortunately, he apparently lived in the neighborhood or area where John Nevill lived! He also went to MS for a few years, according to court records in Montgomery Co. When he apparently returned around 1817, he got real busy serving on juries along with John and George W. Nevill. On the 1820 census of Montgomery Co., TN, a William Nevel appears. I did not get to that date in my survey of court records, so it't going to be interesting to see if William Nevel on the census should be Newel. Randerson Newell? How could the Newells be so inconsiderate as to mimic the sound or spellling of Nevill names!!! Thanks for your observations and comments. The Ward/Neville connection that I have seen in a couple of notes prompts me to add---- On the 1870 census of Titus Co., Tx G.D. [Granderson Jr.] and his wife Louisa Rebbeca (Walker) Nevill have a sixteen year old girl living in their house hold named Nancy Ward. She goes to Scott Co., AR with them in 1871 and marries a Jasper Finch in Sebastian Co., AR. What is her connection to the Nevills? I once thought that she was a half-sister to Rebecca, but I know now that she is not. There IS the possibility that she is a half-sister to G.D. Jr. Granderson's mother Martha E. Nevel may have married a WARD after she divorced Granderson Dandridge Nevill Sr. in Dickson Co., TN in 1845. Thoughts any one? Kathy
Thanks to those of you who resent me Barbara's message which said: > My earliest Neville is Elisha Neville who died in 1863. He married > Eliza Ann Forth (1834-1917) and they had about six children. George > W. , Mahala E., John M., William H., and I think Nancy and Orabelle. > Eliza remarried and had some more children, so I am not sure who's > kids were whose? The land sale records I mentioned earlier show purchases by an Elisha Neavill, Elizah Neavill, Elijah Neavill and Enoch Neavill. All the purchases were in Effingham County, Illinois and most of the sales were between 1850 and 1853. I'm willing to bet Elijah, Elisha and Enoch are brothers. Barbara, do you happen to know for sure any info about Elisha's siblings? Ryan D. Neaveill Champaign, IL
Glen: Just wanted to tell you that I've received my copies in mint condition. Thanks once again for making this offer. Now I am wondering if anyone will be making a creating an edition based on data on descendants of those in the book. NO, I am not volunteering to do this, but there may be some very detail-oriented person in 'our group' who is and who would. Again, thanks. Alice LATHAM Bell
Barbara: Do you have a birth date and place of birth for Elisha? I'm looking for Nevill males born 1835-1840 in TN. Kathy

Could somebody please resend me the info on the Nevilles from Effingham County, Illinois? That's where mine are from as well. My great great great great grandfather was Enoch Neavill. I recently found several government land sale records in which he bought many acres in Effingham for what is now dirt cheap (like $1.25 for 40 acres!). He also had a son Andrew J. Neville (this seems to be where our spelling began its evolution) who bought land in Wayne County, Illinois. And I believe he had another son named Enoch D. Neaville who purchased land in Marion County, Illinois. All three of these counties are next to each other so it seems to show how the family branched out from Effingham Co. I also discovered another land sale record of an Andrew J. Neavall. I think this misspelling was a clerical error. Glenn: I am looking at your own lines you sent [7/15] and would like to compare notes - as, you, I and most everyone else, eventually have to know facts on John the Immigrant to St Marys... You have John 1612-1664 d. "Calvert Co." That should be 1664/5, Charles Co.: MD Calendar of Wills [abstracts]: Nevill, John, Portobacco, Chas. Co., 15 Jan 1664 - 4 Feb 1664 [1665, new style] To wife Johanna, property, real and personal, formerly bestowed by deed of gift. To son William, plantation. To dau. Ellen Lambert, son John Lambert, grandson John Lambert, personalty. There seems to be a period John was in Calvert, which could be caused by county boundary changes, but I plan on going back over everything I have, to see how that came about. It may be from Joe Neville's 360 yr book... I do not recall ever reading where Bridget died, or exactly when - do you have that documented? John gave a few depositions where he gave his age - I'll post them - it varies a bit. Calvert Co. originally was on both sides of the Patuxent River, and that makes for some confusion. I'll sort that out for everyone. It was only a short time before Calvert was on the north side of the river only, St Mary's taking back the south side. In fact, for a very short time, Calvert was called Patuxent Co., originally. There is something that I think is worthy of discussion. The assumption that John Nevill, Calvert Co. will 1673, probated 1674, is the first son of John the Immigrant: Nevill, John, Calvert Co.: 5 Oct 1673-14 Oct 1674 To Richard Tillman, Talbot Co., personalty. Patrick Sullivant of Talbot Co., ex. and residuary legatee of estate, real and personal. test: Ralph Blackhall, Jas. Barkhurst There is not one clue here that he is son of John. On the other hand, there were so few Nevilles, its easy to assume. But, there is a Richard Nevill of the Ark & Dove, sometimes documented as Richard Nevitt, that spent some time in St Mary's, then seems to have ended up on the Eastern Shore. Note that Talbot Co. is Eastern Shore. If John Sr had settled on his oldest son, John Jr, then why doesn't John Jr mention land? [Jr my addition - I find "Jr" nowhere in the records] Most, if not all of us here claim descent from John I's son, James, who went to Northampton Co. VA., or so the experts tell us. That may pan out in the end, but it seems to me that we have to account for John who d. Calvert Co. 1673-74, and also Richard of the E Shore. As we also have to know who were the first Nevilles at Isle of Wight, and what was the connection? Where is it documented that James of Northampton is son of John of Charles Co? Calvert Co. was created 1654. Do our previous researchers explain to us the Calvert Co. dates of 1640, and 1643? Was it that part of St Mary's that eventually, for a short time, became Calvert Co? What is the documentation that says James of Northampton Co., died ca 1700 Isle of Wight? What is the documentation that his son John was born ca 1661 Northampton? Personally, the only thing I can be sure of, is my lines back to George Neavil of Middlesex, who m. 1st Hannah [Symes?] and had his first two dau's baptized in Christ Church, Middlesex., marrying 2nd Mary Gibbs and removing to Prince William/Fauquier to raise his family, and leave a will dated 26 Feb 1774. It seems anything earlier is speculation. George being the brother of Joseph, of whom so many of you here are descendants of... Speaking of that - do you document Joseph's birth in Isle of Wight? I offer this simply as questions that should be considered by all of us - I'm as much in the dark to some of these questions as anyone. Actually, I may have some info. around here that answers my own questions, but I sure haven't come across it, yet <g>.. still digging. .. Jeanne

My earliest Neville is Elisha Neville who died in 1863. He married Eliza Ann Forth (1834-1917) and they had about six children. George W. , Mahala E., John M., William H., and I think Nancy and Orabelle. Eliza remarried and had some more children, so I am not sure who's kids were whose? Barbara
