    1. Our Line
    2. Neville, Gabe
    3. As promised, here's Pete's and my line. Once again, Edward is as far back as we can go. The earliest reference we've been able to find is 1725 in Cecil Co., MD, although Aunt Dorothy (Neville Kimbrel) left a note that she found a 1721 reference. We're looking for his father and are exploring the possibility that his grandfather was Jean DeNeufville (France>NY, 1639 - 1712) and his father John Neville, Jean's son. 1A. Peter Jonathan Neville (1963 -) CA>CO>PA>VA, m. Noemi Wilson CA>VA -Peter Jonathan Neville, Jr. (1995 -) VA 1B. John Gabriel Yngve Neville (1967 -) CO>PA 2. John Terryl "Terry" Neville (1934 - 1993) CO>CA>CO>PA, m. Boel A. M.Enger (1938 -) SWEDEN>CO>PA [Parents] 3. John Arlie Neville (1899 - 1989) OH>CO>PA, m. Cordie Frances Autry [grandparents] John was a private with the US Army during WWI. He and Cordie raised one child in Springfield, CO. John owned and operated a car dealership and service station. They later moved to Denver and then to St. Louis, MO. After the death of his wife, John moved to Pennsylvania with his son. He died in Pennsylvania. 4. Samuel Tilden Neville (1876-1965) OH>CO, m. Alice Matlinda Bucy (1878-1958) OH>CO [great grandparents] In the early 1900's, new lands were opening in the prarie states. Sam and his family went West. They first tried Kansas and Nebraska, and in 1913, homesteaded half a section of land in Baca County, Colorodo. They had eight children of which five reached maturity. 5. George T. Neville (1839 - 1900) OH, m. Malona Ray (1841 - 1901) OH [g, great grandparents] George biult a large house on the family farm that is still livable (as of 1983). 6. Jonathan Neville (1806 - 1872) PA>OH, m. Sarah Ellen Bucklew (1809 - 1865) WV - OH [g, g, great grandparents] Jonathan and Sarah resided in Berlin Township until after the death of his father. They then moved back to the family farm in Killbuck township with their four sons. The farm, with numerous orchards, was on a hill that was then a prosperous community known as Nevill's Corners. Jonathan's two sons, John W. And Jonathan (nicknamed "Bud") and Layfayette Thatcher owned and operated a general store. 7. John Nevill (1786 - 1855) MD>PA>OH, m. Elizabeth Grant (? - 1877) PA>OH [g, g, g, great grandparents] John and his wife Elizabeth (Grant) made their home in Holmes County, OH and acquired considerable land. They had 10 children. Elizabeth Grant was descended from Jonathan Grant who served under George Washington in the Revolutionary War. 8. John S. Nevill (176? - 185?) MD>PA>OH, m. Elizabeth ? (?-?) OH [g, g, g, g grandparents] John and Elizabeth, along with son John and wife Elizabeth Grant (and their children Jonathan and Nancy), moved to Holmes County, OH. Their third child, John J, was born 10 March 1810 in Wayne County, OH. Thomas and Joseph, brothers of John S., joined him in Ohio before 1815. In Holmes County histories, John Nevill is listed as one of the first settlers. One history states, "in the fall of 1810, he erected a large log house on which he put a shingle roof, the first of its kind and undoubtedly a source of intereste to the whole community." Another history states that "Mr. Nevill improved his land in Sec. 22 building a large house and planting an apple orchard and top grafted trees...These were the first grafted trees in the settlement and perhaps the first in the county." After about ten years, he and Thomas returned to Beaver County, PA where they lived out their lives. 9. John Neville (1740 - 1800) MD>PA>OH>PA, m. Sarah Richardson (?-?), MD>PA>OH>PA [g, g, g, g, g grandparents] John and Sarah were probably married in Cecil County MD, though no actual marriage record has been found. Sara was listed in the accounts of Joseph Richardson in 1796, and prior to that, in 1790, John Nevil was administrator for the accounts of Josiah Richardson. John and Sarah were the parents of nine children: John S., Edward, Thomas, Lizzie, Hannah, Nancy, Joseph, Mary and Sarah. According to Census Records, all were born in Maryland. In 1776, John and Thomas Nevil were listed under Colonel Williom Richardson in Maryland's Flying Camp, Fourth Battalion. They participated in the New York and northern campaigns of the Revolutionary War. Prior to 1797, John and his wife Sarah together with all their children (including the oldest son John already married to a woman named Elizabeth and their eleven yearo old son, yet another John) moved to what is now Beaver County in Western Pennsylvania. 10. Edward Neville (? - 1756) MD, m. Mary (?-?) MD [g, g, g, g, g, g grandparents] Edward and Mary lived in the Elk Neck District of Maryland. The Register of Saint Mary Anne's Parish of Cecil County lists the following births on page 329, however, the parents of these children are not named: Joseph Nevill, 12 March 1729, Sarah Nevill, 2 Feb 1727, and Thomas Nevill, 23 Jun 1721. On page 289, these births are recorded: 1732/3 March 24th, James Nevil sone of Edward and Mary his wife and 1740 March 18th, John Nevil son of Edward and Mary his wife.

Neville, 1988. On the same page of the book it says that Joseph Neville, Jr., in a letter dated March 15, 1806, wrote, "My step mother I expect will not hold out many days." It is also stated that this couple are listed in the IGI as kept by the LDS church in Salt Lake City. Possibly they would have better dates and could give Mary's parentage, etc. Some of this same Elliott family probably married into the Bohannon family which intermarried with the Nevilles. I'm sure I've seen reference to an Elliott Bohannon. Regarding Elisha Neville, I have no information. I believe someone else on the list may info. regarding him as I have not tried to keep up with the NC and AL Nevilles at this point. 3. I'm re-posting the Founders List I maintain. Again: these are "founders" of various American Neville families who arrived prior to 1750. Most of a source-reference and a contact w/email address. If anyone has names to add, additional or more detailed citation information, etc., please let me know. Since I know some of you can't open it as an attachment, I'm posting it within a message as well, even though the line orientation may be a little screwy. begin 600 Founders.wpd M_U=00QL'```!"@(!`````@4```#F$@````(``$T@.D7/XJ^(;3=)<#B(.IY M,J-%4[?)AT]R-:*J-1!9&_)3/P5%:"W_K&CX.?E-PMR%ZFB-/[EXY"PWK6.Y MR!]A9B*0?D^+P1A+U&F:3,/!$LRC5#4#Q)=ANXS2W]5[GAD+T E)VMFKHK[O MY[M2W6M$@S=7P_\.#O,S> >\9MH*V/C)% A2&VK'HYT-"Z&W?PQW6.\4BQ^I MH%I#M.E.%@0_A-?[%0*M34^KY8L-,#%;R.FQ'E-IKL9!T(LX'@[%,;H;>5Y8 MM#E:S(';8Y#V(3GV#"OS8;!9G43 JZSG_0%.O13)B7ML&IL]/G_1SLW'3+OT MM/O:$J>9,8W *YT@!X* EKU)AH['9G2FS,W3?E@I,(:!52W=(NGXQFM,]6 ) M5=9)`I<&4 (V1$$*#_0PM$G41)L&I)G,-:R1AUA@I#-E$VEZ'>9I0YH+D <H M:Z0CW1#(:4&L_!)XI&Y7<;\Y@[],X$.4`ULC1M\0>IRRB&%;[+;HM8 WNMGO M06+_/'R[7L#%-P_#[82E21 16TFO+3",]Q$G?[/?AGF/'7?I]!I5] :$5,B' MYT-Q*M"-C3E\E\CMFTU9&WA?UC_E_[31F/6UVJ1P/<GR`C'&' ;R+Y=/&=N! 1. RE: Jean deNeufville
    2. Neville, Gabe
    3. Jan: Wow! Good stuff! Dorothy Kimbrel was my great aunt, by the way (Grandpa's sister). She did an awful lot of good work, and those working on my line owe a lot to her. You know, as a matter of elimination, I'm starting to think that this French line is the most likely one for me. I think it is fairly clear that John of Port Tobacco is not my ancestor, Richard Nevitt is not a Neville at all, and while there are a few "unaccounted for" lines around MD at the right time (prior to 1720s), Edward (d. 1756, Cecil, MD) had to come from SOMEWHERE (I suppose he could have gotten off a boat himself, but there's no record of it). But yes, the Cecil group you ID is in fact my line. Items: Do you have any evidence of any SC Nevilles moving to MD? I'd like to eliminate them right away, unless you think there's a reason not to. Edward died in 1756 and has been succeeded by nine or ten generations of Johns (myself included). That his father, grandfather and brother were named Jean/John wouldn't surprise me. Please clarify: it was Edward's father who was the doctor, right? Not the original immigrant? Do we have any idea what kind of Doctor? Other than the name and timing, I know of no further evidence that Edward came from New York. Any ideas for further research? My brother Pete is going to post our line again, as he has worked out a detailed version. He promised he'd post it today. I've added John Neufville (d. before 1753, Berkely Co., SC) to the Founders list. He's the right guy in that line, right? Thanks again, let me know if you have any other thoughts! >---------- >From: jdfaulk@hop-uky.campus.mci.net[SMTP:jdfaulk@hop-uky.campus.mci.net] >Sent: Saturday, August 09, 1997 1:25 AM >To: NEVILLE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: Jean deNeufville > >At 12:27 PM 8/8/97 -0400, you wrote: >> >>Gabe: > >>Sorry but I have made no such discovery and I don't recall saying that. >>It is merely a possibility. 3. Glen and Jeanne: After reading Jeanne's message about having 11,000 messages about to download, I have a question.... Jeanne are you a list owner for another surname through rootsweb, or were these just in your box? If rootsweb or the Neville's list is spammed, does that mean that our personal computers will be spammed? If we see 11,000 messages waiting to load, do we just push stop? What do we do then? Won't those messages still be waiting to load? I guess that means we would lose other messages? Kathy

    3. Group, Below is an important message. Our list was spared from the spamming discussed but I wanted everyone to be aware of the situation. Just as spammers destroyed the family lists set up through MAISER a few months ago, someone else is sending advertisements and causing problems on the various surname lists currently run through ROOTSWEB. (Rootsweb has approximately 1500 different surname lists.) All the various genealogy programs offered through Rootsweb http://www.rootsweb.com/roots-l/ are legitimate (and most of these are free). Also, John Fuller's information is legitimate. (He is co-author of Genealogy Resources on the Internet.) But I cannot endorse Genforum because of the following message and other messages which I have recently received. Cliff Shaw seems to want people to send in GEDCOMS and other information which one day he will sell to others at a profit. As an effort to prevent such spamming, I have asked Rootsweb to close our surname list so that only persons who have subscribed to a list will be able to send messages to the list. Hopefully this will prevent some outside Spammer from posting unwanted messages. The procedure for subscribing to the Neville List and for posting messages still remains the same. It just means that only subscribed members will be able to post messages. I hope this is clear. Thanks, Glenn Gohr (Neville List Manager) ggohr01@mail.orion.org PLEASE READ: --------------------------- <forward> The Genforum genealogy site is currently having a legal dispute with rootsweb over copyright infringement. Cliff Shaw seems to think that anything that he can find on the internet is free for the taking, just remove the copyright information. Genforum is run by Cliff Shaw. There has been a lot of discussion lately on the listowners mailing list about GenForum. Basically, the "GenForum Staff" is alleged to have plagiarized the web pages of John Fuller "http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html" to develop the GenForum web site. At the time GenForum site went on the web, there was significant evidence to their "theft" on the GenForum web site. The proof was that virtually every surname from John's site was listed on GenForum, including all of the variations or lack of variations as listed at John's site. This includes the variation of SHOCKEY that I gave John permission to use and leaves out similar but unrelated names such as SCHOCKEY and SHOCKLEY. This Cliff Shaw removes any postings that mention how to subscribe to mailing lists for surname or county/state mailing lists. He contacts your ISP and asks that they stop providing service to you for your using of profanity if you use either the words "mailing list" or "RootsWeb" in any postings made at Genforum. Overnight, Genforum SPAMMED the RootsWeb servers causing them to be shut down for repairs and the loss or delay in many postings to over 1000 lists. I sincerely hope that he loses the legal battles that he is facing. Theft of copyrighted materials will ruin genealogy on the internet if not stopped quickly. Les ------ Les Shockey email address = lshockey@emwv.com RootsWeb Listowner for the SHOCKEY family discussion group.
