    3. There was a Ward family near Neville country in the 1710's in present day Martinsburg WV. Their migration followed the Bryan clan for the most part. ---------- > From: Jan & David Faulkner <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Subject: [NEVILLE-L] Nevels-Ward > Date: Sunday, January 24, 1999 1:33 AM > > Did any of you KY/IL Neavilles/Nevels see the following post on Genforum? > Since Wards m. some of the KY Nevels and went to IL, maybe some also came > back to the South later. > > Jan > > Posted by Irona Knox Briggs on November 15, 1998 at 20:18:46: > > I am looking for info on my great grandmother, Lela A. 3. Thank you so much Wayne for an absolutely wonderful answer to my question. 1840-1890 was pretty turbulent in this area. With the influx of people during that time and the widespread diseases of cholera, malaria, and smallpox, not to mention the dangers of mining, I can see why only 3 made it to their 20's. During the early 1800's towns were little more than a cabin or two surrounded by a stockade, hence the Fort in front of a lot of names around here. Because of the annual flooding of the Mississippi and it's feeder streams, malaria was a real problem...even causing them to move the location of Fort Crawford in Prairie du Chien. The lead mines, which are fairly common in this area and just south of here were originally mined by the indian women. The indian men felt that such work was below them. There is a mining museum in Platteville, WI where they have collected much information on the area mines and miners. You might find some interesting information there. (Platteville being one of the larger towns in the area). Thank you again, Bev

    3. Hi Bev, You asked a good question,... why aren't there any Neavilles still around the southwest WI northeast IL area today, considering such good farmland. A combination of reasons, I think, namely. the kids evidently weren't very healthy, those boys who reached their teens were killed or disabled by the Civil War, and the few boys that remained weren't very prolific (two of the male survivors didn't have children). Maybe they didn't like farming, either! Alexander M. Neavill had 10 children, but only 3 made it to 20 years old (wonder if lead poisoning had anything to do with it), and two of them (Henry A. and Enoch Frank) were killed in the Civil War. The only survivor was Carlos E. Neaville, whom I found listed on the 1900 WI census in Spring Valley Town, Rock County, married 21 years but no children. John D. Neavill has 5 children, but only two survived childhood, and both were adopted by Alexander M. when John D. died in 1853. One son, James H. Neaville, was as invalid from the Civil War; I found him listed in the 1900 WI census living with his cousin Carlos in Spring Valley Town. He was listed as single. (Don't know if previously married or any children) The second surviving son of John D. Neavill was my direct line, John A.,.. b. 1844 in Council Hill, IL. He was also crippled in the Civil War, but was well enough to have 4 children afterwards, 2 boys and 2 girls. All the children survived to adulthood, and all but one son had children of their own. After the War, John was a school teacher for 22 yrs and also Grant Co WI Treasurer for 4 yrs. It appears that Alexander's widow's death in 1893 in Potosi, Grant Co, was the catalyst for the remaining Neavilles in Potosi to pull up stakes and head west. John A., with wife and 4 children, moved to Spokane, WA in 1893, then moved to the small town of Deer Park about 20 miles north of Spokane a few years later. His occupation there was "pension attorney" (!) and occasional mayor of the town. He died there in 1930. Wayne Olsen Bonney Lake, WA

Who?... and what info do you have on him/her? >> This is what I wrote about Ephraim's putative brother: ENOCH NEAVILL (dates of birth and death unknown), called Ephraim's brother in a history of Jackson Co., IA, also fought in the Blackhawk War, suffering crippling and painful injuries in the Battle of Wisconsin Heights. [NARA Invalid's Pension file]. <<Ephraim being born in VA is interesting... their parents must have done a lot of moving in 3 years. The 1850/1860/1870 census listed that Alexander and John's parents were both born in VA.>> Interestingly enough, Ephraim NEAVILL is listed on the 1850 census as having been born in the “United States.” In the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, he is listed as having been born in ILLINOIS and NO place of birth is filled in for either parent in the 1880 census which is the first that asked for parents’ birthplaces. I have discounted the place of birth given on these four censuses because another person, perhaps the second wife, Catherine NEAVILL (who was enumerated in Potosi, Grant Co. on 8 June 1860 AND in Union Twp., Washington Co., MO on July 10 ) might have given the information to the enumerator. Because Ephraim himself swore to VA as his place of birth on his application for a survivor’s pension, I have accepted that place of birth as being “true,” (unless, of course, it is later proven to be NOT true!) <<The fact that Ephraim was a lead miner in Council Hill, Jo Daviess Co IL in 1832, to me, makes it an open and shut case! Council Hill is/was a SMALL village, and that's where both Alexander and John D. lived as lead miners at the same time. John D. and Alexander M. arrived in the Galena area from Springfield IL area in 1827, and both also served in the Black Hawk War of 1832. John "Nivil" was in Capt Duncan's Company of Mounted Riflemen, transferred from Capt Scales' Co infantry, 27th Reg of IL military, evidently because he had a horse. Alexander M. was also listed as sergeant in Capt. Dowlings Company, same company as Ephraim. Another listing for Alexander also in Capt Lambert Vosburgh's company of 27th regiment. I think all of those companies were raised in Galena.>> Chris Heaton sent me info on mining permits at Galena on the following: James Neavill 1826-7 John Neavill approx July 1827 Alex Neaville July 10, 1830 I agree that there is a great deal of CIRCUMSTANTIAL evidence for a relationship of some sort -- but am still hoping for PROOF. Until such proof surfaces, I have to label the relationships clearly as mere conjecture with qualifiers such as “probably,” “perhaps,” and “possibly.” I need to insert here that the compilation on Ephraim Neavill that I submitted to the list resulted from the joint efforts of the following descendants: Alvy Karin Flynn (greatgrandson), Neville (Wood) (Freiboth) (Gumensky) (Kuhne) Pedersen (greatgranddaughter), Sharon Honnold Anderson of Idaho, Marilyn Huizenga of Illinois, Susan Crumley Rigger of Oklahoma, (all 2nd greatgranddaughters of Ephraim and 1st wife Rachel Cox), Christine Joy Heaton of Florida (3rd greatgranddaughter of Catharine (Van Hook) (Heaton) Neavill and her 1st husband, William Heaton) and myself, Diane Wilson Flynn (2nd greatgranddaughter-in-law) of California. <<Diane, do you have family records, bibles, or other documentation like that which augments the very few public records there seem to be in that area?>> I sure wish I had official documents for each event in Ephraim’s life!!! This is some of what I do have: Census records: 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 (last 3 from Chris Heaton) Photocopy of newspaper [The Galenian] announcement of Ephraim and Rachel Cox’s marriage on 29 April 1832 by the Rev. Mr. Thomas (Sharon) Death certificate (2): one from Los Angeles Co.; (Sharon) one from widow’s pension application (Diane) Ephraim’s Pension File from National Archives (NARA) in Washington, D.C. which I personally copied in its entirety, containing: Signed Affidavits: daughters Ellen Collins (Neavill) (Red) Mc Graw and Emily (Neavill) New about their mother, Rachel E. Neavill’s, death “in confinement” on 24 May 1845 at White Oak Springs, La Fayette County, WI. and from the sister-in- law of Ephraim’s widow, Catherine (Lemon) Van Hook on the same subject. Catherine Van Hook (wife of Franklin D. Van Hook) also submitted an affidavit on the death of Catharine Van Hook Heaton Neavill’s 1st husband, William Heaton “when my son Pence was a baby and my said son Pence is now forty six years old. . . .” (Peter Pence Van Hook was born abt.1848.) Photographs of EPHRAIM: Two portraits which both show a strikingly handsome person with high cheekbones and what appear to be luminous blue eyes, as a young man, taken in Madison, WI and as an old man, probably taken in CA. (from Sharon) Two cabinet cards showing the Bloss family in front of the homestead cabin in San Gabriel Canyon, Los Angeles County, CA, including an aged Ephraim and his five-year-old twin granddaughters (Alvy K. Flynn, prob. from Edna C. (Bloss) Gordon) Various excerpts from county histories that mention Ephraim Neavill and the Cox family. Enoch is only called Ephraim’s brother in one of the histories -- and that particular historian was incorrect on other details about Enoch. ENOCH Neavill’s Invalid’s Pension File that I examined and photocopied at NARA. An anecdote about Enoch that appeared in one of the county histories. There is one other Neavill you guys haven't mentioned yet: DIANNAH NEAVILL, who appears in the 1852 Territorial Census of IA as head of household. Total in household: one male and three females (no ages given). Since this is the twp. where Ephraim was allegedly the first jp and Enoch the constable, I have often wondered whether this woman was Enoch's wife and that he was deceased. Does anyone out there know who DIANNAH NEAVILL was and where she fits in? Neavill, Diannah State : IA County : Jackson Co. Location : Fairfield Twp Year : 1852 Page # : 012 Anxiously, Diane

    3. Having been following your discussion from the sidelines, just thought I'd interject a couple of words...I live in Clayton Co., IA just across the Mississippi from Prairie du Chien, WI. Out of curiosity I checked the regional phone book and found a Niel Neville not too far upstream. He's the only one listed of any of the Neavill, Neville, Nevills, etc. The family must have moved on from this area. It hits me as odd that there aren't more of that family around here...this is prime farmland. Most of the people that came stayed. Century farms are commonplace. Perhaps as the lead mining petered out they headed to the mines out west or north into northern Michigan. I'm sure you have those people's movements figured out...just curious, where'd they go? Bev

    3. Hi Diane, Ryan, Barabara, Jan, and everyone,, Hallelujah! Diane, that was a terrific posting, and Ryan, thanks for responding back so rapidly with all those old postings.(It saved me a lot of typing!) I get the digest version of this List and download once a day or so - with this EXPLOSION of information on my probable family line, I'm overwhelmed! What a difference 24 hrs makes! I agree with Ryan, ....seems like a good bet that Ephraim is a brother of at least John D. and Alexander M. Neavill... just too many coincidences from your posting, Diane. First of all, you mentioned in your first posting that you may have the name of one of Ephraim's siblings - I'm dying of curiosity... Who?... and what info do you have on him/her? Ephraim being born in VA is interesting... their parents must have done a lot of moving in 3 years. The 1850/1860/1870 census listed that Alexander and John's parents were both born in VA. John was born in TN Dec 12, 1807, and Alexander in KY Sep 24, 1809, so a lot of travelling in that short period, but not impossible. The fact that Ephraim was a lead miner in Council Hill, Jo Daviess Co IL in 1832, to me, makes it an open and shut case! Had another listing for Alexander also in Capt Lambert Vosburgh's company of 27th regiment. I think all of those companies were raised in Galena. Looking on the map, all these places are pretty close together... Scales Mound is the next village east from Council Hill, and LaFayette County WI is the adjacent county to the north from Jo Daviess Co,...the border is about 4 miles north of Scales Mound. And then Grant County, WI, with Potosi where Alexander moved to in 1840, is the next county west from LaFayette Co. And Jackson Co IA is just across the M. Riverand slightly downstream from Galena. How cozy! Had noticed other Neavills in Grant Co and LaFayette Co WI on 1850 and 1860, but couldn't figure out any relationship... Diane, your posting has probably solved a good part of it. One extraneous one, though,.. there's a Catherine Neaville listed in the 1860 census in Potosi, Grant Co. WI, as head of household. Was she in your line? John D. died in 1853, and his wife Maria Louisa Meredith died in 1847, both in Council Hill. But I still haven't found John D. on any 1850 census, although his two living children at that time, James Henry Neaville (b. Dec 20, 1840 IL) and John Alexander Neaville (b. Jan 31, 1844, Council Hill) were living with Alexander in 1850 (and Alexander formally became their guardian after John D. died). Did you run across any extra John Neavill in your searches?! In my wanderings through the Galena courthouse, Potosi, Council Hill, etc, it's funny I never ran across the name Ephraim (maybe shows I didn't expand my search very well). Diane, do you have family records, bibles, or other documentation like that which augments the very few public records there seem to be in that area? Will be interested to hear if you see any more correlation of your family with ours after all these messages the last 24 hours! THANKS! Wayne Olsen Bonney Lake, WA [email protected]

I still think George & Enoch may have had a brother James? (or even a Henry). No proof, but just theory. If Ephram had a brother Enoch, it couldn't be George's kids, as he already had an Enoch b ca 1810. and living in Effingham Co 1830-1850. The History says he died there? This Enoch's wife continued to live there for another 50 years. The names E names of these guys seems to be a pattern. I also have a lot of Henry's and a couple of Franks. Of course with the number of names I have, there are bound to be some the same!? I don't think there would ever be a document that connected all of these guys, but George and Enoch surely had a bunch of kids that are unknown. ____ Barbara McNamer

I'm not sure why Andrew J. adopted this unusual spelling. It is pronounced the same as NEVILLE though. I wonder if there even was a reason. My name could just be a casualty of 19th-century illiteracy. Though this seems unlikely because I know Andrew was literate. Here's some stuff from some earlier posts by Wayne: ************ Subject: Enoch NEAVILL, b. 1838 in Council Hill, Jo Daviess Co. IL Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 04:07:12 -0400 From: "Wayne L. Olsen" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Ryan, Barbara, and others,... Looks like I have an Enoch in my ancestry, too. I'm the one who's been grasping at straws trying to find clues on the parentage of John D, Neavill (b. 12 Dec 1807 in TN, d. 7 Jan 1853 in Council Hill, Jo Daviess, IL) and his brother Alexander M. Neavill (b. 24 Sep 1809 in KY, d. 12 Mar 1881 in Potosi, Grant Co., WI). The James Nevill listed in the 1830 IL census in Jo Daviess Co is still a possibility as their father, but how about this one for coincidence......... The 1850 census for the Alexander Neaville household in Potosi, Grant Co WI lists one of the children as ENOCH F. Neavill, age 12, born in IL. The 1860 census still had him living with the family at age 22, listed as E. Frank Neavill. So, maybe, there was an uncle, great uncle, grandfather in that line named Enoch?? Any ideas or comments? As best I can piece together, Alexander and John D. Neavill moved with their parents from Kentucky sometime after 1809 to Ohio (unknown locality), then to the Springfield IL area. Alexander's obituary stated that he then arrived in the Galena lead mine area of Jo Daviess Co on Apr 30, 1827 (with or without parents... unknown), settled in Council Hill, then moved to Potosi WI (about 20 miles away - also lead mining area) in 1840. Alexander married Ann E. Meredith from Urbana, Champaign Co OH in 1831, and John D. married Ann's sister Maria 7 years later, but I haven't found anything to indicate that the Neavill brothers were ever in Champaign Co. Ryan, did your Enoch Sr spend any time in the Springfield, IL area? The clue that Shirley gave me about George Norval listed in Council Hill 1850 census didn't pan out... the guy was age 22, born in NY, and a single boarder living with a William Ennor family. His wife died in Council Hill IL in 1847, and he died there in 1853. Evidently his brother Alexander M. Neavill had taken John A. Neavill and James H. Neavill in by 1850, and in fact formally adopted them after John D. Neavill died. 3. John D. Neavill was born in TN Dec 12, 1807; Alexander was born in KY Sep 24, 1809 (have no leads on where in either state)...... as you can tell, I'm still looking for John and Alexander's parents. 4. Interesting that Alexander aged only 2 years between 1850 and 1860. Wish I could do that! 5. Besides the name Enoch popping up as Alexander's son,... I stumbled across another interesting possibility: a Henry Neville was issued a mining permit for the Galena IL lead fields in Oct 1828 (ref F587.I6 F53, whatever that means). According to Alexander's obituary in 1881, at some point after his birth in KY, he moved with his parents to Ohio and then to Springfield, IL. "When about 18 years of age he started for the Galena lead mines, which place he reached on the 30th of Apr 1827. He finally settled at Council Hill, in Jo Daviess Co IL remaining there until 1840,..." then moved to Potosi, WI. Wondering out loud, Ryan , whether your Enoch Sr. had a brother named Henry? 6. According to Alexander's obituary, he had 10 children, but only 3 reached adult age, and two of them died in the civil war (Henry and Enoch F.) Carlos was the survivor. I have no idea who Esiline was,...born in Iowa? Alexander must have run a boarding house or something... notice he had 17 in his household in 1855! Hope this might have struck a resonant chord with someone. Thanks. Wayne Olsen Bonney Lake, WA ************ Subject: Re: John of Mtg Co TN Date: Wed, 7 Oct 1998 04:09:37 -0400 From: "Wayne L. Mar 12, 1881, Potosi, Grant Co, WI). 1880 census indicated that their parents were born in VA. Alexander's obit states that he removed with his parents to Ohio and from there to Springfield, IL. When about 18 yrs old, he went to the Galena (Jo Daviess Co, on the Mississippi) lead mining area, arriving there Apr 30, 1827 (my John was about 20 then,.. may or may not have been with Alexander). Both John and Alexander are listed as volunteers of a Galena company in 1830 raised for a skirmish in the Black Hawk War. Alexander moved to Potosi, WI in 1840 while John settled in Council Hill, northeast of Galena. They both remained in those area until their deaths. So, that's all I have on their early wanderings. A few big problems with the idea of linking up with John of Mtg Co TN,... do I understand it correctly that John of Mtg Co TN was living in Mtg Co for the 1850 census? Certainly doesn't match with the obit report of family moving to Springfield IL unless,.... at teenage years my John and Alexander may have tagged along with George W. Nevill's family. Building flatboats on the Mississippi does open up some possibilities. Another problem, ,,, sounds like many of his family migrated south, not north. I lost track - the John of Mtg Co TN - where was he born? And any idea where he was specifically in 1807 and 1809? (or maybe more properly, where his wife was!) Any other info on John of Mtg Co which would tend to correlate, or completely decorrelate, any connection with my John and Alexander? Thanks, everyone. Wayne Olsen Bonney Lake, WA ************

I have wondered if this John and Alexander were not sons of my ggg grandfather, Enoch NEAVILLE, who lived in Wayne County, Kentucky, and later Wayne County, Illinois. Alexander had a son named Enoch as well as a daughter named Esiline. These "E" names fit nicely with your information. Another family with lots of "E' names was that of George NEAVILLE who lived in Wayne County, Kentucky; Alamaba; as well as Effingham County, Illinois. George was probably the brother of my ggg grandfather, Enoch. George had children named Enoch, Elijah, Elisha and Elihu. Your Ephraim is of the right age to have been a son of either Enoch or George NEAVILLE. Following is some info I have on the Jo Daviess County NEAVILLs. Wayne Olson on this list has posted more info on this family as he is a descendant of this line. GENERATION 1 Children of ? NEAVILL are: JOHN D. NEAVILL, b. 12 Dec 1807; d. 07 Jan 1853, Council Hill, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. ALEXANDER M. NEAVILL, b. 24 Sep 1809. ************ GENERATION 2 JOHN D. NEAVILL (son of ? Neavill) was born 12 Dec 1807, and died 07 Jan 1853 in Council Hill, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. He married MARIA L. MEREDITH 1838, daughter of ? MEREDITH. Children of JOHN NEAVILL and MARIA MEREDITH are: JAMES H. NEAVILLE, b. Abt. 1841. JOHN ALEXANDER NEAVILLE, b. 31 Jan 1844; d. Feb 1930, Dear Park, Spokane County, Washington; m. MYRA GAY GOODRICH, 14 Sep 1875. MARY E. NEAVILLE, b. 06 Nov 1842, Jo Daviess County, Illinois; d. 24 Jan 1843, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. ------------ ALEXANDER M. NEAVILL (son of ? NEAVILL) was born 24 Sep 1809. He married ANN E. MEREDITH 1831, daughter of ? MEREDITH. Children of ALEXANDER NEAVILL and ANN MEREDITH are: HENRY R. NEAVILL, b. Abt. 1838. ENOCH FRANK NEAVILL, b. Abt. 1838. ESILINE NEAVILL, b. Abt. 1842.

In a message dated 1/20/99 6:19:45 PM Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << I'm betting that your Ephraim ties in with John and Alexander NEAVILL who also lived in Council Hill, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. >> Hi Ryan, You have a really super webpage on the Neavill family -- very comprehensive and extremely well done. I just discovered it today (joined the rootsweb Neville-L list a few days ago). I, too, have wondered, especially about Alexander M., because he was so often found in the same places as "my" Ephraim and Enoch. In the 1860 Census, he was found in Potosi, Grant Co., WI when Catharine and her three daughters were there. I had deduced the Meredith surname for his wife because of some relative living with them in one of the censuses. This is part of what I have for Alex: Generation No. 1 1. Alexander M.1 Neavill was born abt. 1810 in Kentucky (Source: Federal Census, Wisconsin, 1860, Grant Co. , Potosi Village, p.671; male, age 50, b. Kentucky. Relationship to Ephraim is CONJECTURE & unproven although he was b. in KY and lives close to Catherine in Wisconsin.D.I.W.F. 5/25/96). He married Anne E. Meredith Bef. 1836 (Source: Presumaby, before first child was born in 1836.). Children of Alexander Neavill and Anne Meredith are: 2 i. Henry C.2 Neavill, born abt. 1836 in Illinois (Source: Federal Census, Wisconsin, 1860, Grant Co., Potosi Village, p.671; male, age 24, b. Illinois, occ. lead miner). 3 ii. Frank E. Neavill, born abt. 1838 (Source: Federal Census, Wisconsin, 1860, Grant Co. , Potosi Village, p.671; male, age 22, b. Illinois, occ. lead miner). 4 iii. John A. Neavill, born abt. 1844 (Source: Federal Census, Wisconsin, 1860, Grant Co. , Potosi Village, p.611; male, age 16, b. Illinois). 5 iv. Carlos(?) E. Neavill, born abt. 1853 (Source: Federal Census, Wisconsin, 1860, Grant Co. , Potosi Village, p.671; male, age 7, b. Wisconsin.). I sure hope that Wayne Olson contacts me. Do you have Wayne's e-mail address in case he misses my post? I wish we had some better evidence of a relationship -- because propinquity is not necessarily consanguinity! One of my internet co-researchers on Ephraim, Christine Heaton, copied info from an index to newspapers in Belleville, St. Clair Co. on your Guy Neaveill -- the one killed by the train: "D.A. [I assume this is abbreviation for newpaper name] NEAVEILL, Guy killed when struck by train, while June 6, 1927 working as member of bridge building crew; age 40 years. Survived by wife and 3 children." Ephraim Neavill was a literate man [served as justice of the peace]. I have his spectacles. He unfailingly wrote his own name as NEAVILL, although others spelled it variously. . . It seems to me that the spelling that your branch has adopted has a very good reason behind it: NEAVE-ILL has to be pronounced differently than NEV-ILL! Thanks so much for your speedy reply. Diane

    2. I am seeking the parents and siblings of Ephraim NEAVILL (1806-1984) also known as Neaville, Nevel, Nevil, Nevill and Neville: On 5 July 1806, EPHRAIM NEAVILL was born in Virginia, but he swore in an affidavit that he did not know in what place or county. [application for survivor's pension, Indian Wars, filed in 1893] The names of his parents and all but one of his siblings are unknown. On 29 April 1832, EPHRAIM, a lead miner, m., 1st, RACHEL COX at Council Hill, Jo Daviess County, Illinois [The Galenian]. Rachel, b. KY, was the fifth and youngest child of ROBERT COX, an Irish immigrant to KY right after the Revolution, and JANE/JEAN ROBINSON, reputedly the daughter of a wealthy VA planter. Allegedly the Coxes "forted with Daniel Boone" after their marriage. [Thomas E. Nichols and Simon Bolivar Cox] On June 11, 1832, EPHRAIM enlisted at Galena, Illinois in the Illinois Volunteers, 27th Regt., Captain Dowling's Company during the Blackhawk War [NARA War Records]. ENOCH NEAVILL (dates of birth and death unknown), called Ephraim's brother in a history of Jackson Co., IA, also fought in the Blackhawk War, suffering crippling and painful injuries in the Battle of Wisconsin Heights. [NARA Invalid's Pension file. By 1837, EPHRAIM and his growing family had moved to the nw corner of Maquoketa twp (Fairfield Township), territory of Iowa; EPHRAIM was first Justice of the Peace and ENOCH the first constable under the territorial government of Iowa in this twp. [Port. & Biog. Album. of Jackson Co. 1889] Soon afterwards, the Coxes, Neavills and Col. James Collins removed to White Oak Springs, LaFayette County, WI, where they worked in the lead mines until about 1840. By 24 May 1845, when RACHEL (COX) NEAVILL died "in confinement," there had been at least six children born to the marriage: ( After the first child, the next five were all given names beginning with the letter "E." Surname NEAVILL: Mary Jane, b. 25 Mar 1833 at Scales Mound, IL who m. Edwin SAWTELL 10 Oct 1852 in WI. Thirteen children. Ellen Collins, b. 5 Feb 1835 in IL (or WI) who m., 1st, _____RED in CA. One child: Ella C. Red; m. 2nd, John McGRAW-2 known children Emily A., b. 1838, m. 4 March 1853, prob. as his 2nd wife, William H. NEW. Three stepchildren; two children (Elinora and Evaline NEW). Edward J., b. 1840 in WI. Last record: 1860 Census in Union twp., Washington Co., MO, as a 21-yr.-old miner, living w/ his father & stepmother. Evaline, b. 1841 in IA., m. 1 April 1858, Obadiah TAYLOR of Guilford twp., Jo Daviess Co., IL. She d. 23 June 1867. One child, Sophronia. Elizabeth Harriet (later known as Harriet E.), b. c. Apr 1844 in IA or (WI); m. at age of 14, 18 Mar 1858 [Nevada Journal] at Cherokee, Nevada Co., CA, Alvy Anderson BLOSS, age 29, b. 14 August 1829 in French Creek, Chautauqua Co., NY, a teamster. Seven children; among them: (surname BLOSS) Ephraim Parley (1860-1885) and twins Ethel Neville (1885-1942) and Edna Collins (1885-1965). The twins and their eldest sister Ida (1861-1929) changed the spelling of the NEAVILL name to NEVILLE, probably because they believed there was a connection to the noble house of Neville (Richard Neville of Warwick -- the Kingmaker) in Great Britain.[family notes and letters]. Ethel Neville (Bloss) Wood named her only child, a daughter, Neville Wood. On 1 Oct 1850 the widower EPHRAIM NEAVILL m. the widow CATHARINE (VAN HOOK) HEATON, b. NJ on 30 Sept 1813, the daughter of James Lawrence Van Hook and Elizabeth Reeves in La Fayette County, WI.[Marriage Record]. At the time of the 1850 Census, October 10, 1850, Ephraim, Catharine and a baby, Oscar [called Neavill on the census roll], are living in Shullsburg, La Fayette County, WI with Catharine's children: Harriett, Franklin and Anne Heaton, and Ephraim's daughter Ellen; The rest of Ephraim's children: Mary Jane, Edward, Evaline, and Elisabeth H. (Harriet Elizabeth) Neavill were with Ephraim's sister-in-law Eleanor [called Ellen] (Cox) (Bates) (Young) Collins, sister of Rachel Cox Neavill. Circa 1852, another "E"-named daughter, Eunice Neavill was born in WI to Catharine (Van Hook) (Heaton) and Ephraim Neavill [Census 1860 WI, MO]; On 26 Sept 1853, Julia E. Neavill was born in WI. [death certificate] A third daughter, Adelia, was b. in 1856 in WI. [Census 1860 WI, MO-- part of the family was enumerated twice] In the 1860 MO Census, Ephram NEVIL, age 54, miller [sic], Catharine NEVIL, age 46, Franklin HEATON, age 22, miner, Edward NEVIL, age 21, miner, Unus NEVIL, age 8, Julia NEVIL, age 6 and Adelia NEVIL, age 4 were living in Union twp., Washington Co., MO. In 1869, (buried on 8 Sept in Walnut Hill Cemetery), "Della" NEVILLE died in Belleville, St. Clair Co., IL., age 13 years [cemetery card copied by Christine J. Heaton] In 1870, there was Ephraim NEVILL, age 64, Catharina ditto, age 54, Julia ditto, age 17 [Census 1870 St. Clair Co., IL]. Eunice NEAVILL not found, but had probably already married John PERKS by this time. In 1880, there was Ephram NEVEL, age 73, Katharine NEVEL, age 65, Julia SAULSBY, widow, age 26, Henry SAULSBY, age 9 and Ephraim SAULSBY, age 5. [Census 1880 St. Clair Co., IL.] In 1881, Julia SAULSBY "(NEAVILL)" m. 2nd, George BOUL in French Village, St. Clair Co., WI. [Marriage certificate] Also about this time, Ephraim NEAVILL moved to California to live with his married daughters: Harriet E. (Neavill) BLOSS in San Gabriel Canyon, Los Angeles Co. and Ellen C. (Neavill) (Red) McGraw in Whittier. Ephraim's second wife, Catharine (Van Hook) (Heaton) NEAVILL remained with her son Franklin D. Heaton in Halifax, St. Francois County, Missouri. On the 22nd of May 1893, Ephraim applied for a military pension for his service in the Blackhawk War of 1832 which was approved in August. [NARA pension file] On the 24th of March 1894, Ephraim NEAVILL died at the home of his daughter in Whittier, CA, of "Inanition due to senile changes." In Halifax, MO, his widow Catharine immediately applied for a widow's pension, which was granted just about the time that she passed away in Valles Mines, Jefferson Co., MO, on 9 November 1894. [NARA pension file] Correspondence on these NEAVILLs welcome. I will be happy to share pictures and information and to exchange what documentation I have with other researchers. 3. -- [ From: Jeanne Barton * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Peter: I don't know anything about the Talbot Library, that mesg. was on one of the other lists I am on - but it sounded good. Yes, I spotted your post ref. the Westchester town lot - I don't think I've ever seen that before. I just didn't have time to ponder it, as I would like to. The name Westchester threw me off - this a.m. it dawned on me its probably West Chester, i.e., west of the town of Chester/Chestertown, on the river. I couldn't find it on my modern map, but it just may have been a designation meaning the west side of the river, as the river ran through the town, if I recall. You know, that's a pretty good size building, for the times [20x40]. I wonder if it was a public building, like a ordinary? I've seen church sizes noted as 20x40. John Salter was a commissioner or similar office, and evidently a land speculator, as I've come across other deeds to him, while browsing some books trying to make sense of all this. Chester Town was in existance as early as 1650s, although outranked as a port by Oxford, downriver, at the time. It evidently was deep-water even up until around the Revolution, when it was very active as a port of exit, and shipbuilding center. I also had the same thought about William and Sarah Noble, and William and his wife, Jane - possibly father and son? If you have it at your fingertips - wasn't the court record about William possibly living in bigamy in Charles Co.? If not, where? William married Sarah Noble 1694, and the same year [see if you can get the exact date] conveyed the Westchester lot to her... I wonder what this suggests? Are they an older couple and he is securing her financial security in case of his death? Then, is this lot among the lots sold by William & Jane 26 Mar 1694 [which would be 1695]? This surely needs more investigation. Now - from the book Ship Passenger Lists New York and New Jersey 1600- 1825 by Carl Boyer: John Fenwick's Colony - the oldest English speaking settlement on the DE River, Salem Co., NJ. Passengers on the Griffith 1675: [arrived, fall, 1675] p. 215 James Nevill History of the Colony.... New Jersey... p. 217 One moiety or half part of the province of NJ belonged to the Lord Berkeley, and now was sold to John Fenwick, in trust for edward Bylling and his assigns. Fenwick, in 1675, set sail to visit the new purchase in a ship from London, called the Gritfith; arriving after a good passage... he called [the place] Salem... near the DE River. Other passengers... Richard Noble... This was the first English ship that came to West Jersey, and none followed for two years, owing to a difference between Fenwick & Byllinge ... The proprietors, William Penn, Nicholas Lucas, E. Byllinge, John Eldridge and Edmond Warner.... Among other purchases of the West Jersey lands were two companies, one made up of Friends of Yorkshire, the other Friends of London [Quakers]. The same book has a list of oath of abjuration 1715-16: Rachel Neufeile [of New Rochell, widow] I think I've posted all this previously, but I'm including it to ponder if their is some connection with James Neville and Richard Noble arriving at the same time... 3. Hi My name is William Neville and I am attempting to find information on my great grandfather William J Neville who I believe lived in the Columbia area in 1850 . I am trying to find out how he might have been related to Joshua Neville. I have some 1850 census information for Richland CO showing Joshua ,Henry and William there along with others. The census records are on pages 24 and 28 of the 1850 Richland Co. census. Joshua's death notice was in the Feb. 3 1851 edition of The South Carolinian. I suspect that Joshua's son was Henry and Henry was the father of William J Neville but I have no way to support this. I wonder if the death notice would have listed children and other family information. Would others have already done this research and have this information?.

    2. Jan & David Faulkner
    3. Bill, Ryan, Barbara and other researching eastern KY Nevilles, I sent Pat O'Neal some of the discussion we had last summer about the James Nevils/Nancy Brooks family of Claiborne Co., TN. I have her permission to post her reply which indicates some of the family went to Whitley Co., KY, not far from the Adair/Wayne/Pulaski Co. area. I thought you might be interested in her comments. Jan -------- Jan, Thanks for the Nevils/Brooks info. Lots of questions there. I found one thing that I didn't know--the date of marriage for Martha Evaline Nevils 1809/James Campbell. You see, I'm related to the Nevils on my mother's side and my father's side of the family. The above couple were my gggrandparents on my mother's side. Martha Nevils' brother, George Washington 1810, was my Dad's grandfather. Then again, comes another connection: Mackness Rowlett-1768, was my ggggrandfather on my mother's side. Mackness first married Mary Hudson, and in 1838, married Nancy Brooks/Nevils/Brooks. (I guess that's how I know Nancy B/N/B married Mackness Rowlett. Haven't a clue about the Brooks man. But there had to be someone between James Nevils and Mackness Rowlett---else, where did Nancy get those 5 kids?) Yeah, I know about being consistent in recording info. That's why I try to always say the person's name, rather than 'she' 'he' 'her' 'him', etc., because that isn't clear in most cases. Does all this make me my own grandmaw???? with a 57-varieties nationalities....? Sure would like to see something on the "Campbell" ancestors----the 'James Campbell' that married Martha E. Nevils, ca. 1825. Let me know if anything turns up. They had a son, James P. Campbell b. 1843, who was a Baptist preacher and married Nancy E. Estep. Both were buried in Whitley Co, KY. James P. was my maternal ggrandmother's brother. Nancy E. Estep was my paternal grandfather's sister. (My head is beginning to spin----too confusing for me to figure out----all of Mom's relatives married Dad's relatives!!) Hope you can find your way thru this maize. Pat O'Neal
