    1. [NEVILLE-L] Levi NEVEL of Minnesota
    2. Ryan D. Neaveill
    3. I found today in the LDS Ancestry File CD a listing for a Levi NEVEL, born 1847 in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Anyone know anything about this fellow?

    1. [NEVILLE-L] NEAVILL - WARD
    2. Ryan D. Neaveill
    3. I found some info today on Susannah Ferrel NEAVILL and Daniel WARD who were married 10 Sep 1807 in Wayne County, Kentucky. Daniel was the brother of Elizabeth WARD who married George NEAVILLE in Wayne County, Kentucky. This info is from the LDS Ancestry File CDs so bear in mind that this info was input by someone who may or may not have verified it against official records. The CD listed Susannah as born in 1786 in Kentucky. It said Daniel was born in 1790 in Virginia and died about 1871. One son was listed: John WARD, born 1824 in Kentucky. John married Martha Jane BARNFIELD on 30 Jan 1860 in Franklin County, Illinois. John and Martha had a daughter named Eliza Jane WARD, born Mar 1861 in Franklin County, Illinois. There were a couple of marriages listed for Eliza and possibly more descendants but I didn't have time to look them all up.

    3. Peter, The following was a mistake in my previous message on Neville/Noble of West Chester, MD: A comment on James Neville who arrived on the Griffith: He may be the same James Nevill of Fenwick's colony in West Salem, NJ. I should have stated NEW SALEM, WEST JERSEY, not West Salem, NJ. The records I cited are from pre-New Jersey days. I am not sure if this area finally fell into Pennsylvainia or New Jersey. (William Penn was one of the proprietors of West Salem.) 1. [NEVILLE-L] Edward Nevell, 1625 in Virginia
    2. Has anyone researched this fellow? Has he been discussed on the Neville-List before and I just couldn't find enough free space to fit it in? He and Edward de Neufville of New Rochelle New York are the only two Edwards that I am aware of prior to Edward Nevill of Cecil Co, MD in 1721 and Edward Nevell of Dorchester Co, MD in 1699. Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. 1916: "A Courte held XXXIth of November 1625...Mr. Crispe demanded his Tobacco of Mr. Nevell ...." p. 149 "Thomas Cryspe, gent., sworne & examined sayeth that he was witness to A Covenant when Edward Nevell did Covenant to deliver one hundred pound weight of Tobacco to Robert Newman uppon theire arivall at Canada, in consideracon yt the said Edward Nevell had a bill signed [?] over to him by [Captain] John Ward for the repayment of ye said hundred waight of Tobacco at this Cropp. And fourther sayeth yt when they arrived at Canada Robert newman demanded ye Tobacco of Mr. Nevell at damarells Cove [off the coast of Maine] ..." p. 239 "William ffoster sworne and Examined sayeth, that he this deponent demanded of Mr. Nevell at Canada beinge abord the Swann, wherfor Mr Cornishe was hunge, unto whom Nevell answered he was ung for rascally boye wrongfully, And that he hath heard Mr Nevell say so divers tymes." p. 340 Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. 1917: footnote on p. 121: "...the cutting off of the ears of Edward Nevell for the...offence of criticising the government for Cornishe's death." There's probably more on this guy, but I didn't have time to look much more. Peter Nevill

    1. [NEVILLE-L] Jeanne, Jan, Gabe & everyone: "Salem, Fenwick, ..."
    2. Jeanne & Jan, Thank you for your posts on "Neville/Noble of West Chester, MD". I don't know what to make of all this yet, but here are some tid-bits: Jan wrote: "I wonder if he (James Nevill of Fenwick) had other Neville relatives who came to the colonies." Here's a likely candidate and possibly great source of info: The Smith family (Burlington County, New Jersey, and of Philadelphia) Papers include NEVILL, SAMUEL (1697?-1764) correspondence. [Libraries, Private. Burlington (N.J.), Moorestown (N.J.), Burlington County (N.J.), Philadelphia (Pa.), Legislators -- New Jersey. lcsh Merchants. lcsh Control No.: NJRV93] I'm guessing that he is related to the Samuel Nevill that was a member of General Free Assembly in 1682 [Salem, Co NJ Genealogical Data. by Stanley Craig] Gabe, could you get to the Philly library? Shirley wrote: "But, if the residence of Thomas Hartshorne (Married William Nevill to Sarah Noble in 1694) could be identified as in MD, NJ or MA, we would have an answer as to what Salem was being referred to for this marriage." A Thomas Hartshorne was born in Reading, Massachusetts 1642. [http://uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/Tracy_Ashley_Crocker/CROCKER/d2/i00050 97.htm] and aparantly married Hannah __, May 10, 1671 [Early Massachusetts Marriages Prior to 1800. page 79]. Reading is about 10 miles from Salem. I've e-mailed the Crocker genealogist to see if she knows of any Thomas Hartshornes that were likely to be doing marriage ceremonies. If I recall correctly, the Hartshornes were a prominent Cecil Co MD family, and warrented a short section in George Johnston's History of Cecil Co. Does anyone have easy access to the book? How far back do the Cecil Co Hartshornes go? These Hartshornes migrated up to Chester County PA where my gradeschool class teacher was a Hartshorne. I'll have to get in touch with her. ----------------------------------------------- Message-Id: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [NEVILLE-L] Jeanne: Neville/Noble of West Chester, MD Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Peter and Jeanne, A comment on James Neville who arrived on the Griffith: He may be the same James Nevill of Fenwick's colony in West Salem, NJ. I posted notes on him last July or August. He was an agent for Fenwick and later for Penn. Neville was involved in an estate settlement and may have gone back to London to settle it after his arrival here; therefore, he may be on more than one ship's passenger's list. The footnote on him in the source I used stated that he does not seem to have had children. However, I wonder if he had other Neville relatives who came to the colonies. The records refer to him being from Stepney, London and London, England. Since he was settling his father's estate, I wonder if we could turn up his father's will in London. When you have time, would you compare it to some notes I found on the New Salem, West Jersey James Nevill (taken from notes I posted last summer)? He was the James who came from Stepney or Stebonheath, London, Middlesex Co., England, to Fenwick's colony in New Salem and was later an agent for Lord Baltimore (Baltimore also one of the proprietors in West Jersey). I am wondering if you think he is the same person found in Someset Co., MD. That idea could turn out to be relevant to the research I am doing on James Nevill in Bath/Beaufort Co., NC in the late 1600s-early 1700s. Jan ---------------- To: [email protected] Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 09:29:58 -0500 Subject: WM m SARAH NOBLE Jeanne, Do we really know that Wm Nevil m Sarah Noble in MA? I am not sure that I have seen a record that gives the state of the marriage. What I have is that they were married in Salem and there were a number of Salem's. I haven't checked for dates of founding to make sure they were in existences in 1694, but Dorchester Co., MD has a Salem as does Salem Co., NJ. Both of these are closer to Charles Co, MD than is Salem, MA. I believe the reference for this Salem marriage is in Charles Co. Land & Court Records, Vol. 18, V No. 1, 1696-98, p243. At the 14 Sept. 1697 court William Nevill produced a certificate to show that Sarah Noble was his lawfull wife. The certificate is dated "Salem October ye 28th day 1694" and is signed by Tho: Hartshorne. Witnesses were Wm fraford, Richard Whittman & Mary Whitman. I am not sure from my notes if these were witnesses at the time of the marriage or witnesses in court when this was presented, or what. But, if the residence of Thomas Hartshorne could be identified as in MD, NJ or MA, we would have an answer as to what Salem was being referred to for this marriage. Another Salem reference, again with no state mentioned, is in 1685 when James Nevill of Salem was named as executor in the will of Edmond Gibbon of Delaware River. [Baldwin, MD Calendar of Wills 2:5] Then in 1686 James Nevill of Salem sold to Robert Ashton & Richard Darkin both of Newcastle Co., PA, yeomen, the tract "Windham". I don't have notes on the deed. This is from Thompson. Jones, Richardson, Duhamel & Allied Families of MD, p453. I think this is the James of Somerset & Wicomico Co., MD. Are there other Salem references that I do not have? 2. Just an awareness thing: I have the following two Neville generations in and out of Beaver Co, PA during the same time frame as your Bartholomew Neville. I've not personally done any research on these individuals. If you ever run into any records on them, I'd appreciate knowing about it. 9. John S. Nevill (176? - 185?) MD>PA>OH, m. Elizabeth ? (?-?) OH John and Elizabeth moved to Holmes County, OH prior to 1810. Their third child, John J, was born 10 March 1810 in Wayne County, OH. Brothers Thomas and Joseph joined him in Ohio before 1815. After about ten years, he and Thomas returned to Beaver County, PA where they lived out their lives. 10. John Neville (1740 - 1800) MD>PA>OH>PA, m. Sarah Richardson (?-?), MD>PA>OH>PA Prior to 1797, moved to what is now Beaver County in Western Pennsylvania. First, Shirley wrote a while back about the Samuel and George NEAVILL found on the 1850 census for Jefferson County, Indiana: "Samuel (m Elizabeth Fewell) & George (m Elizabeth Cox) seem to be the ones in a Bible transcribed & at the DAR Library." Now, the Samuel NEAVILL mentioned above later moved to Marion County, Illinois (this is where James and Indiana NEAVILL lived for a while too). Also, in Marion County on the 1870 census there was an Enoch NEVILLE. This Enoch is apparently the same one who was born abt. 1848 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania (Note: Beaver County is where Batholomew NEVILLE married Emmiline COX). This Enoch married Thamar Ellen BIDDLE on 26 Mar 1871 in Fulton County, Ohio. Enoch died in 1899 in Richland County, Wisconsin (Note that Richland County is not far from Lafayette and Grant Counties where Alexander NEAVILLE moved after living in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Also note that Ephraim NEAVILL who lived in Jo Daviess County was married to a Rachel COX and he had a brother named Enoch).

    3. Shirley and others looking at East Coast Nevilles, Your notes on Richard Nevell, likely father of James Nevill of Northampton Co., VA, indicate that Mary, Richard's widow probably married John Furrs. In other notes related to the Furrs surname, there are variations of the spelling. Your notes also show that Richard was imported by Randall Revell I want to note a couple of surnames associated with James Nevill of New Salem, West Jersey: Farr and Revell. I am posting notes below in case anyone has anything to add that might indicate a relationship between Elias Farr and Burlington, NC and John Furrs and between Randall Revell and the Revells who lived in New Salem, West Jersey. Page 342 footnote #1 to James Neuill name above: JAMES NEVILL was a weaver, of Stepney [aka Stebonheath], London, but in the West Jersey records is usually styled "gentleman," indicating that he did not follow his trade in this country. He came over with Fenwick, and brought a wife, but apparently no children. He seems to have had a decided taste for the law, and a fondness for writing, which led Fenwick to appoint him Secretary for the Salem Colony, April 30, 1678. He was a magistrate (commissioned Oct. 26, 1679), a conveyancer and scrivener, real estate agent, and a little of everything else. He signed the West Jersey Concessions, March 3, 1676-7. In 1681-4 he was an agent of William Penn, adversely to Fenwick. One of the volumes of Salem Records is filled with miscellaneous memoranda, made by him, of leases, law suits, contracts, etc., etc., of the greatest interest and value to the local historian. [Note-Jan: On p. 341: William Penn, "Proprietor and Governour of Pennsilvania, also Proprietor of Salem Tenth, West Jersey" listed as an executor of will of John Fenwick along with Samuel Hedge, John Smith, and Richard Tindall.]

    3. Shirley, I was searching some old posts for information related to Peter's current research and came across the following post from you. 3. Peter and Jeanne, A comment on James Neville who arrived on the Griffith: He may be the same James Nevill of Fenwick's colony in West Salem, NJ. 3. I know I'm probably asking a question that has already been discussed but I'm finding Nevilles allied with a new family I'm studying. Does anyone know anything about George Neville of Washington Co VA late 18th century and John Neville of Farquier Co Va (mid 18th century)? They appear on deeds with a Rector family I'm tracing. As a matter of fact they appear with some of Browns too. In the same documents are Hite, Hitt, Yocum, Arnold, Sanders, Slaughter, Auxier, Jost..... I'm a little surprised because all these names appear in Hampshire County VA too (but a little earlier). Would the Hampshire Co folks have migrated to Farquier then Russell? (I know the Auxier/Browns did but the rest too?) Is Russell (Washington Co) VA the jumping off point before going to Montgomery County KY? The Rectors are allied to Bryant (O'Brients), Berryman, Ramey, Lewis, Auxier (Oxer, Oxshur...). (So are my Browns) and the Rectors originated in Germanna VA.

This Enoch married Thamar Ellen BIDDLE on 26 Mar 1871 in I can add yet another interesting coincidence to this but dated too early to be connected to Bartholomew. Jennifer There seem to be some interesting coincidences here. Maybe they are not coincidences; then again maybe they are.

    1. Re: [NEVILLE-L] Leroy Brownlow/Sarah Nowel info. from MO
    2. Glenn: Thank you so much for looking up the census record for Brownlow. I am hoping now to be able to make some headway. I am hoping someone will come up with who Sarah Nowel's (Nevil) parents are. I was in Laclede Co. and Springfield last Aug. but was not able to find anything on Elizabeth. One birth record of one of her children said that Elizabeth was from Hartville and since there isn't a Hartville in KY I figured that she had been living in Hartville, MO. I looked through every name on the Census for 1870 for Wright Co., MO and did not find a Nevil in that Co. I am not sure about Nowel but I think I would have spoted it if I saw one. Thanks again.
