    3. Daris, Thank you for the additional details on your George W. Nevil. Do you have something which indicates he might have moved to Hickman Co., KY, or were you just speculating? Such a move could really tangle some lines since there was already a George Washington Nevill (wife Rachel Killebrew) from an entirely different family who lived in that county <g>. I don't suppose you have ever come across a Martin Nevil anywhere in your line, have you? We have one list member, Corrine, who is looking for a William Nevil/Nevels b. in TN. I wonder if your Bill would match up with any of her information. Jan At 12:08 AM 2/21/99 -0600, you wrote: >No problem, Milton. 3. Ruth and Bob, I see Bob has answered the question about who is researching the Nevilles in West Feliciana Parish. Thank you, Ruth, for showing the possible connections of the Wilkinson Co. group and those in West F. P. Bob, the Wilkinson Co., MS Neill/Nevill reference I was referring to in my previous note is as follows: The Natchez Court Records 1767-1805 Abstracts of Early Records compiled by May Wilson McBee. (Originally published Greenwood, MS 1953; reprinted for Clearfield Co., Inc. by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore 1994.) The following according to May W. McBee: When the U. S. acquired the Natchez District from Spain, it was agreed that all legal land claims would be recognized. To get this confirmation, written proofs of title had to be submitted to the U. S. government for consideration. The abstracts of title are recorded in seven volumes under the name Written Evidences and lettered A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. They are deposited in the Dept. of Interior, Land Division, National Archives, Washington, DC. Also available in the same dept. of the Nat'l Archives are the original files of the claims recorded in the Written Evidences...The files give much detailed information that is not included in the Written Evidences. Every file was examined and is given with the written evidence to which it belongs. [My note - Jan: I think the double slash marks indicate the division between the abstracts and other information found in the files from which the abstracts were made.] Land Claims Book F, p. 213. Claim No. 1762. Spanish Govt. to John Cammock, 400 acres on a br. of Bayou Sarah, 45 mi. SSE of the Fort, adj. Thos. Lilly White and Daniel Clark. N.O., 7 Dec. 1797, by Carondelet. // File. Claimants, Nevill and Beauvais, 30 Mch. 1804. Rejected 3 June 1807. Samuel Nevill and James Beauvais Claim 400 acres of land in Wilkinson Co., as above, and the intermediate conveyances annexed. (signed) Neill and Beauvais. Land Claims Book F, p. 216. Claim 1764. Spanish Govt. to William Collins 500 acres on a br. of Bayou de la Feliciana, adj. Wm. Dunbar. Dist. of Natchez, 1795. // File. Claimant, Neill and Beauvais, 30 Nov. 1804. Rejected 13 June 1807. Samuel Neill and St. James Beauvais claim 500 arpents as above granted to Wm. Collins, a res. etc. and by the intermediate conveyances. [Some of the original files of claims were not recorded. The following is one of them.] Unrecorded Land Claims No. 1763. Claimants: Neill and Beauvais, 30 Mar. 1804. Rejected. Neill and Beauvais claim 4 acres in Town of Natchez, by virtue of a Spanish patent in name of Baptiste Trenier prior to 27 oct. 1795, and an improvement made sd Trenier in 1797, while an actual settler of the Territory. Plat shows lots adjoining those of George Cochran, John Girault, and S. Minor [probably Stephen Minor]. ------------ If Nevill was corrupted to Neill in some of the MS records, that could explain why you are having some difficulty locating your family in MS, Bob. One real interesting detail related to your search is the Lilly name in the above record. That name was also associated with the Nevills in one of the Feliciana Parishes. I hope some of this helps. Did your family spell the name Nevels by the time they were in TX? 3. No problem, Milton. I'm glad you joined in with that info. Jan, I show that George W. Nevil, son of Reuben Sr., was born 1832, and married to Sara CROSS. I have a copy of a document showing that Gorg. W. Nevils was on list of Deserters on April 1, 1863 from Co. E, 1 Reg't West Tenn Inf (subsequently became 6 Reg't Tenn. Calv). He was listed as a Corp. He is also mentioned, along with "Bill Nevel (Old Ruben Nevel's son)", in the book "Tennessee's Last Kingdom", by Ernest R. Pounds. It is possible that he moved to Hickman County, Kentucky some time after the Civil War. From what I understand, George did not follow the other brothers (William (Bill), Reuben Jr, and Parker) to Texas in the 1880's. I just noticed something interesting about the following entry from "Marriages of Gibson County, TN". Pg. 101: "Samuel Mount to Frances Flippin, Sept. 27, 1854. R.J. Nevil, BM." It is interesting to note that Reuben's (Jr) brother, James Madison Nevil, married Luzania MOUNT. So it might have been the case that Samuel MOUNT was Luzania's brother, and that is why Reuben (Jr) served as bondsman. But perhaps it was James' father, Reuben Sr., that served as the bondsman. 3. Milton, Thank you for the information about George. Maybe you can answer another question. Who was the wife of James Nevil, son of your Thomas and Elizabeth Tiller Nevil? I think there may have been one "loose" James Nevil in Amherst Co. around the end of the 1700s or early 1800s, and I am trying to pin him down. Thank you also for the scanned signatures of Thomas Nevil and Wm. C. Whitehead. I agree that what has been interpreted as a middle initial C for Thomas Nevil is actually a large flouish on the N in Nevil. I can understand how it could seem to be a C, particularly in a poor copy. In the copy of Wm. C. Whitehead's signature, James Nevil's is also shown. Is that James the one who was Thomas's son? 3. Hello Larry, Welcome to the list! It's great to have a GA researcher who is descended from John Nevill. I have been looking at the Nevills in Beaufort Co., NC, and I think some researchers show your John Nevill being part of that group, but I don't know if the connection has been documented. Have you found any information which might link John (b. ca 1725) with the Beaufort Co., NC Nevills? How did you establish approximate dates for John's birth and death? It is very interesting that your Delilah Nevill married Samuel Williams because a Williams group was in the same area as the Nevills in Beaufort Co. The two family names are found in some records together. Do you happen to know anything about Samuel Williams' family? Have you seen the book The Nevill Family of Bullock Co., GA by Hugh Floyd or A 370 Year History of One Neville Family by Joseph B. Neville? In both books, Mr. Floyd has information about Deliah and Samuel Williams' descendants. He shows his ancestor Jacob Neville as the brother of your Deliah, and he also shows their father as John and mother as Frances Ann Mixon. He then links John with a Jacob Nevil/Nevill who lived in Beaufort Co., NC, showing the Jacob of Beaufort Co. as the father of John and another Jacob as the brother of John. I have references to Jacob Nevill, Sr., Jacob Nevill, Jr., Moses Nevill, John Nevill and Absolom Nevill found in the Beaufort Co. records, but have not yet looked up all of the documents or looked for their link with the GA Nevills. The Beaufort Co., NC group is interesting because they used some of the same family names as a Nevill/Neville group who were in the area of Harford Co., MD. Moses is the most notable of those names; however, the Moses Nevill in Beaufort Co., NC seems to be a generation older than the one in Harford Co. Surnames associated with both Nevill groups include Mitchell, Davis, and Williams. However, I don't think anyone has established an actual link between the NC and MD groups yet. Moses Nevill of Harford Co., MD moved with his family to Canada shortly after the Rev. War. (Thomas Welch of MD and his family moved with Moses. Welches/Welshes also lived in Beaufort Co., NC, but I haven't found them linked to the Nevills yet.) We have a list member from Canada, Paddy Chitty, who is descended from the Harford Co. Moses Nevill who went to Canada. Through this list, we have been able to share information that has helped us guess about a connection between the Beaufort Co. group and the Harford Co., MD Nevills but nothing has been proven. If you have done in research on connecting your family with the Beaufort Co. group, I guess you have learned that you have to look under many different district, county and precinct names including Bath and Albemarle, to name just a couple. I am looking forward to hearing more about your family and sharing information. Nevill emigrated to Bartholomew County, Indiana, in approximately 1835. Family tradition claims he came from Barren County, Kentucky.I have not been able to prove this. In actuality, the border between the two counties varied until around 1900; James never moved but his county of residence did! There are very few records. His birthdate (3/9/1796) and deathdate (6/11/1865) come from his tombstone as does wife Margret (b: 10/?/1797 d: 6/14/1863). He left no will in either Bartholomew or Johnson County. Two land grants in Bartholomew County exist: one in his name, dated 1849, and another in a different name that apparently passed to him when the land was purchased from that individual. Land purchases and birth of daughter indicate move from Kentucky occurred 1835. Daughter Larminda was born in November 1836 in Bartholomew County. No county of birth has been found for previous children; only state of Kentucky. There is no indication James served in military (no pension applications or records), although he would have been age 16 in 1812 (War of 1812). Records indicate a James Nevil DID serve in 1812 and 1814/1815 in that war with Kentucky militia. I don't know if that was my James or not; the Nevilles of Barren County had military connections so it might have been James (married to Phebe Renick) instead of Indiana's James. Family tradition (heard by grandfather, still alive today at age 92) always said family came from Barren County. No marriage record there for a James Nevill and Margret (though records there were disorganized when I visited). Any ideas? Jim Howe [email protected] ---------------------------- Fri, 30 Jan 1998 13:06:45 -0800 (PST) To: [email protected] From: [email protected] (Shirley L Wilcox) Jim, you haven't said what, if any Barren Co., KY records you have checked nor what Johnson & Bartholomew County records. Have you figured out any possible associations with other families? People often moved in groups or followed each other. Are there any names that continue to pop up being a deed witness, living nearby on the census, etc. Sometimes you have to study whole neighborhoods. Did any of the children marry someone from KY that might have been a child of an aquaintance or fellow traveler of the parents? Have you tracked all of the children on the census? Sometimes an elderly relative will be found living in one of the households that gives a clue for another surname that can be searched. Are you tracking all the children? Have you found death dates for them? Some IN counties have death records that go back to the 1880s. Perhaps a death record or an obituary for one of the children of James will give the names of parents. What were the age categories on the 1840 census? Were there other children born between William & Stewart? Developing a profile of the family will help you in identifying a family on the 1830 census of KY that might be a match. One thing that VA & KY have are yearly tax records for everyone, not just those who owned land. If he was in Barren Co., the tax records would show James up through 1834 or 35 and then he should disappear. If he owned land in KY he probably sold it shortly before moving. What record did you find for a James serving in the KY Militia during the War of 1812? If it was Capt. Job Glover's Co., KY Militia, that James was the one who married Phebe Renick according to pension records. Shirley

Wit: Elias Robinson, Dennis Conley. Acknowledged by William Hemsley, Attorney for William Nevill, 19 Jun 1695. Memo: That the day and year specified, the said WILLIAM NEVILL made delivery of the key of the doors of the chiefs house being upon the within bargained premises. Wit: E. Robinson, Dennis Conley. [Talbot County Land Records, Bk 3. Leonard. p.22] 15 June 1694. WILLIAM NEVILLE to SARAH NOBLE - a dwelling house and lot at the town of Westchester - the sixty-fourth lot of the said town, according to the numbers as laid out by the surveyor - the dwelling is forty feet in length and twenty feet in breadth - formerly belonged to Michaell Hackett. Wit: Jonathan Fuller, Jonas Greenwood. [Talbot County Land Records, Bk 3. Leonard. p.20] (This is the one I found mention of earlier, here's the actual record.0 There's a Robert Noble is mentioned in 1705 as having willed some land to his daughter Frances. He's a "Gent." in 1702. There's also a Thomas Noble as early as 1696. Could be Sarah's family. These are new to me: Col. Thomas Richardson 23.20 I Balt Co. 5.16.0 1702 The amount of the inventory also included #1200 Appraisers: WILLIAM NEVILL, Thomas Jones List of debts: William York. [Abstracts of Inventories and Accounts of the Prerogative Courts of Maryland, 1699-1704] (my note: this is particulary interesting to those of us whose John Neville married Sarah Richardson and served under Col. William Richardson during the Rev.) Davis, Mary, of Shrewsbury parish, at Court, 1731 was found guilty of committing fornication on 10 April 1730, and begetting a bastard child. She was ordered to receive 10 lashes. She named WILLIAM NEVELL as the father. (Kent County Criminal Records, JS#25:430). My guess is that this is the William Nevill whose estate was appraised by John Collins and Richard Gould in 1746 in Queen Anne's County; there is no mention of relations in the record. Peter Neville =================================== Jeanne, Thanks for the response. As a novice trying to work my way through all of this; it sure is good to get feedback. I like your idea that West Chester is on the West side of the river from Chester. My understanding is that William was accused of bigamy in Charles County, but I don't actually have ANY of the early John, William etc. records. I only have what I've gleaned from NEVILLE-LIST e-mail postings. As for the exact date for Wm. Nevill conveying the West Chester lot to Sarah Noble, the book does show the exact date. I'll have to go through Talbot Co. Records. INNKEEPING: ---------- Your suggestion that the house William Nevill gave to Sarah Noble may have been an Ordinary can be backed up with some evidence. I found the record in a book called "Innkeepers of MD" or something (I still haven't retraced my steps to i.d. the source). The author is not explicit, but seems to link the the Wm Nevill to S. Noble house to "Innkeeping." I'm inserting the full record at the message bottom. John Nevil was an Innholder 80 years later and lived at "Fork" (same location as the Inn?): 15 July 1777 - 19 January 1778. JOHN NEVIL (Innholder) to Thomas Williams, Taylor - a lease of 3 ½ acres, part of the "Fork" whereon JOHN now dwells - a term of four years, paying yearly on 10 August the sum of £50 rent - Thomas to have firewood and timber for necessary repairs from any part of JOHN's land called "Birmingham's Fortune." JOHN to provide materials to build a shed to the side of the stables, to cover the old meat house and to lay an upper `floar' in the barn and pay the workmen and help saw the board timber. Wits: James Roberts, James Massey. [QA Co. Land Rec _. _. _. p. 124] [QA Co, MD Land Rec, Bk 8. Leonard. 1997]. (My Note: John Nevil bought Birmingham's Fortune in 1770 from George Lambdin of Kent County on Delaware -- QA Co, MD Land Rec, BK 7. Leonard. 1997. p.70) A John Nevil is on the rent roll for "Fork" from at least 1705 - 62: John Nevell: Land: Fork, Acrage: 3.5a; Dates: 1705-1762; Ref: #12-520. [MD Archives Index #56, Rent Rolls 1639-1776 _ v. 1-13 ] So, John the Innkeeper living at "Fork" in 1777/8 looks like the same family line as John Nevil on the rent roll for "Fork" starting in 1705 -- only 9 years after Wm. Nevill and Sarah Noble appear to be in the Ordinary business in West Chester. March 26, 1694 William Nevill and wife Jane of Talbot Co (Northern part of which became Queen Anne's in 1706) sold lots to John Salter at the FORKS of Chester river [Talbot Co. Land Rec. L.L. #7, p99-100.] I need to determine where "Fork" is and see if it could concevabley be related to the Forks where Wm. & Jane Nevill sold lots to Salter in 1694 and/or to the Wm. Sarah Noble conveyance. If Wm. sold a few lots to Salter, maybe he kept a few for himself and family? Nevills also had lots in King's Town, so it might be in that area: 19 April 1739. William Shepard, Yoeman, and Catharine his wife, to JOHN NEVILL, Planter - consideration £50 current and 3,000 pounds of tobacco - part of a lot adjoining Number Eleven in Kings Town. William and Catherine (she being first privately examined) acknowledged their deed before William Jumpe and Thomas Wilkinson. Alienation fine, one pence sterling, paid to Richard Tilghman, Jr. (QA Co. Land Rec _. _. _. p. 217) [QA Co, MD Land Rec, Bk 3. Leonard. 1997]. I clearly have quite a bit more work to do. I'm supposed to be off work next Monday, I'll try to get to either NGS or DAR library. A FEW LAST THOUGHTS: -------------- Note that Richard Tilghman, Jr. in the Kings Town transaction. That's kinda interesting given Calvert Co John's will: NEVILL, John, Calvert Co., 5th Oct., 1673 - 14th Oct., 1674. To RICHARD TILLMAN, Talbot Co., personalty. Patrick Sullivant of Talbot Co., ex. and residuary legatee of state, real and personal. Test: Ralph Blackhall, Jas. Barkhurst. 2. 16. [Maryland Calander of Wills] There are several Neville/Tillghman records in QA Co from 1736 - 1760s, including land sales etc. There's a Tilghman's Island in Talbot County just across the river from the town of Neavitt. Hmm...? FULL CITATION FROM "MD INNKEEPERS": ---------------------------------- Innkeepers of Maryland (?) 6 March 1688. Thomas Bruff, Innholder, purchased 200 acres on Chester River called "Ramsey's Folly," only one of the many transactions by which he obtained a large amount of land. Some by patent, some by purchase. One of these purchases has to do with a mysterious town called "Westchester" - formally laid out by 1689, but by whom and for what purpose? The first mention is the sale of a lot in the town, called "Whitehall; "followed by a sale of another lot in 1691 and 1693, all to John Salter. In 1694 WILLIAM NEVILLE conveyed to SARAH NOBLE the 64th lot in the town of Westchester together with a forty by twenty feet dwelling house. On 10 April 1696 Thomas Bruff, Innholder, sold a lot in Westchester to John Salter - of which no record of purchase can be found. By 15 June 1697 Thomas and Rhoda had moved to Doncaster on Wye River where they carried on the Tavern until Thomas' death in 1702. He provided for Rhoda during her lifetime; divided "Crouche's Island" and land at Doncaster between his sons Richard and Thomas; divided "Knottley's Enjoyment" between his daughters Susanna Bruff and Rebecca (Russell), and made a gift of personalty to Mary Stevenson, a third daughter (Thomas Bruff's will MCW II:246). Free Library Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii -- [ From: Jeanne Barton * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Peter: I don't know anything about the Talbot Library, that mesg. was on one of the other lists I am on - but it sounded good. Yes, I spotted your post ref. the Westchester town lot - I don't think I've ever seen that before. I just didn't have time to ponder it, as I would like to. The name Westchester threw me off - this a.m. it dawned on me its probably West Chester, i.e., west of the town of Chester/Chestertown, on the river. I couldn't find it on my modern map, but it just may have been a designation meaning the west side of the river, as the river ran through the town, if I recall. You know, that's a pretty good size building, for the times [20x40]. I wonder if it was a public building, like a ordinary? I've seen church sizes noted as 20x40. John Salter was a commissioner or similar office, and evidently a land speculator, as I've come across other deeds to him, while browsing some books trying to make sense of all this. Chester Town was in existance as early as 1650s, although outranked as a port by Oxford, downriver, at the time. It evidently was deep-water even up until around the Revolution, when it was very active as a port of exit, and shipbuilding center. I also had the same thought about William and Sarah Noble, and William and his wife, Jane - possibly father and son? If you have it at your fingertips - wasn't the court record about William possibly living in bigamy in Charles Co.? If not, where? William married Sarah Noble 1694, and the same year [see if you can get the exact date] conveyed the Westchester lot to her... I wonder what this suggests? Are they an older couple and he is securing her financial security in case of his death? Then, is this lot among the lots sold by William & Jane 26 Mar 1694 [which would be 1695]? This surely needs more investigation. Now - from the book Ship Passenger Lists New York and New Jersey 1600- 1825 by Carl Boyer: John Fenwick's Colony - the oldest English speaking settlement on the DE River, Salem Co., NJ. Passengers on the Griffith 1675: [arrived, fall, 1675] p. 215 James Nevill History of the Colony.... New Jersey... p. 217 One moiety or half part of the province of NJ belonged to the Lord Berkeley, and now was sold to John Fenwick, in trust for edward Bylling and his assigns. Fenwick, in 1675, set sail to visit the new purchase in a ship from London, called the Gritfith; arriving after a good passage... he called [the place] Salem... near the DE River. Other passengers... Richard Noble... This was the first English ship that came to West Jersey, and none followed for two years, owing to a difference between Fenwick & Byllinge ... The proprietors, William Penn, Nicholas Lucas, E. Byllinge, John Eldridge and Edmond Warner.... Among other purchases of the West Jersey lands were two companies, one made up of Friends of Yorkshire, the other Friends of London [Quakers]. The same book has a list of oath of abjuration 1715-16: Rachel Neufeile [of New Rochell, widow] I think I've posted all this previously, but I'm including it to ponder if their is some connection with James Neville and Richard Noble arriving at the same time... 1. [NEVILLE-L] Cecil Co, MD Edward Nev -- New Records Found
    2. I found a few "new" records on Edward Neville of Cecil county yesterday. These are the earliest records that I'm aware of. I think that this info reduces the probability that we descend form Dr. Jean de Neufville of New Rochelle, NY. The dates that I have for the Dr. Jean de Neufville are (1639-1712). My understanding is that his son John de Neufville aka Neville (b. 1678 - bef. 1710); died young, leaving young sons Edward (?-?) and John (?-?). So, Edward of New Rochelle could not have been born before 1694 or so and this is only 2 years before Edward Nevill of Cecil County appears as a debtor to John Hyland (note: the Hylands are a prominant family in Cecil Co--the Nevills have business dealings with them well into the 1700s). A few of the names that he is listed with do sound French: Davillard, Linare, Beavill, Beaviss, and maybe even Beaston and/or Sequence. 1. [NEVILLE-L] effects of sampling in Census 2000 on future geneaology
    2. Well, this is what I do for a living. I'm one of the guys that, on bahalf of the Census Bureau, haggles with the White House and Congress over how the Census will be conducted and how much it will cost. The "sampling methodology" would've used traditional (but simplified) questionnaires for 90% of the population and then used those data to calculate a statistical estimation of "hard-to-enumerate" populations. Historically, an immense amount of money and effort has been expended to try to count the last 10% or so of the US population that doesn't want to be counted. The Supreme Court has ruled that we may not use statistically sampling for purposes of aportioning Congressional Seats. So, we'll get a couple of billion dollars more to try to "fully enumerate" the last 10% of the population. This will, in my opinion, result in a marginal increase in genealogically useful data collected. ============================================== X-Message: #1 Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 02:13:54 EST From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Subject: [NEVILLE-L] 2000 Census Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Hi all, This is not a Neville question per se, but I'm hoping Shirley might know something about it. Have any of the genealogical societies discussed the impact on future generations if the US government uses statistical sampling for the 2000 census rather than the forms we filled out in 1990? Or am I misunderstanding something? I'm just curious, I've not seen it discussed in anything I've read. Congratulations on all the work you Enoch relations are doing. I'm not one of you, but it's exciting to watch from the sidelines. Thanks, Michelle Ule [email protected] Ukiah, CA Joseph Neville (1707~1792) VA
