    1. [NEVILLE-L] RE: Henry County Nevilles
    2. Chuck Neville
    3. I went to the state Archives in Frankfort, KY today and found a will for Thomas Neville of Henry County, KY dated 3/1/1806. The will was probated in Henry County Court in August 1806. He left about all to his wife Mary (Stewart) Neville. He also named his sons, Stewart, Thomas, Robert, and George as well as his daughters, Helen, Sally, Mary, Kitty, Nancy, Jency and Betsy. I am trying to find a connection between George Neville (M. Delila Eldridge) and either Thomas or Stewart as his father. After looking at the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census again today, it appears that Thomas Neville was the father of George Neville. Thomas had a male child in his household in both 1830 and 1840 that is the right age range who was gone in 1850. In the 1850 Census, George appears with his family Delila and Susan. During the 1850 census, both Thomas and George Neville lived in Carroll County, Ky, which is across the river from where Thomas Neville Sr. lived in the early 1800's. If anyone has any additional infomation on this Neville family, please post it of email it to me. I am particularly interested in the Thomas - George connection and also in finding out what happened to Robert and the older George. Chuck Neville [email protected]

    2. Jan, I do not have any records like that relating to Schoharrie Co. and would be delighted to receive them. Thank you. By the way, the recent notice of the LDS yielded fruit when I checked the site. I was able to obtain the birth date and place of my gm Julia Ann Grantier as well as the names of her parents. All information I did not have. Rey

    1. [NEVILLE-L] 1874 letter Nevills from MD to Ohio claiming French origin
    2. Below, at last, is my transcription (original spelling and all) of the letter that Gabe located a month or two ago. The letter was written by Wilson Nevil in 1874 to his son Samuel. The original is in the private collection of Nonette Swedberg's brother and is tucked inside their old family bible. I am working with Nonette to try to clarify the illegible portions of the letter. QUESTION: can anyone offer any guidance to me as to the "proper" way to try to get a copy of this officially archived somewhere so that it may become public knowledge? We will, of course, publish it in the the NHR. Source: Wilson Neville letter to son Samuel, 1874. Private collection of Nonette Swedberg. (My note: are there previous pages?) Sara was listed in the accounts of Joseph Richardson in 1796, and prior to that, in 1790, John Nevil was administrator for the accounts of Josiah Richardson. Sarah's sister Mary Richardson Joshua Buckmaster (Wilson Neville letter to son Samuel, 1874. Private collection). John and Sarah were the parents of nine children: John S., Edward (see photograph of his son William), Thomas, Lizzie, Hannah, Nancy, Joseph, Mary and Sarah. According to Census Records, all were born in Maryland. In 1776, John and Thomas Nevil were listed under Colonel William Richardson in Maryland's Flying Camp, Fourth Battalion (this information is not based on my research, I am trying to verify his service). William Richardson's brother Joseph was a Captain in the Flying Camp. They participated in the New York and northern campaigns of the Revolutionary War. Prior to 1797, John and his wife Sarah together with all their children (including the oldest son John already married to a woman named Elizabeth and their eleven year old son, yet another John) moved to what is now Beaver County in Western Pennsylvania. 11. 3. Shirley, thanks for spelling out the procedures of how will books were processed, who wrote, who signed, and all those good things. I have received essentially the same information from Carrie Adamson of AGS, two good heads better than this one!. Of course I had hoped that Alexander's will would have shed light on the spelling of Grandfather Yelverton, Yealvaton, or Yelverton, or---- as the case may be. But then again, it may in the long run turn out to be a combination of all three, much as other grandfathers spelled Neville (if they could spell at all) in a variety of ways. Three steps forward, two steps back, but on occasion I believe I have it reversed. Thanks, Tom

    1. [NEVILLE-L] Death of Mary Marie Barker Nevill
    2. NEVILL
    3. While it is not key to any current discussions going on with the NEVILLE list, I wanted to note the passing March 25th, 1999 of my grandmother, Mary Marie Barker NEVILL. She was born 9/12/1902 and married Irwin Lowell NEVILL, who was descended from the Benjamin Nevill clan in Indiana. There are a number of folks now tracing this line (William Nevill - Elizabeth Chandler) back through Indiana and Kentucky. Marie Nevill was the matriarch of my Nevill family. Her only child, William Albert Nevill (my father) turned 70 on January 1st of this year, and she was an honored guest at his party. We should all be so fortunate to attend our children's 70th birthday celebrations! Unfortunately, she was not on good terms with the Nevill in-laws, and even though she was of sound mind, she didn't want to talk about her invaluable knowledge of the Nevill family that spanned this entire century. Her husband died in 1976. Whenever my research turned up a relative, I would talk to grandma and invariably get some non-committal reply like, "Oh yes, there were Nevills down in Mead, Indiana, but there's nobody there anymore." I was frustrated at the knowledge I know she had but didn't want to give. The connections and history of the family are certainly more important in the long run than any personal arguments during our lives! May we all learn to give freely of our history to those who can carry it forward. --Paul Nevill Richardson, Texas

    3. Tom, The clerk copied original records such as wills & deeds into bound books. This would include signatures. I did find a deed once where it looked to me that the grantor also signed the bound copy. This was very unusual. It was a German signature and written under it was "his hand". I remember asking some of my peers & they suggested that the old German gentleman may not have trusted the English clerks - no proof however - just theory. Remember that wills did not get recorded until after someone died. Some counties kept the original wills & filed them with other loose papers in probate packets. If he signed by mark he either could not write or was very old & feeble as I have seen instances when a man signed his name when he was younger but not when he became old & weak. 3. I have three marriages in my notes.........all girls. The only surname that I noticed in Wayne Co KY was Ferrel. Enoch Ferrel m Nancy Neville in Knox Co 1799 and Susan Ferrel [Nevill scratched out?] m Daniel Ward in Wayne Co 1807 [Nancy Ferrel gave concent] [Daniel Ward being the brother-in-law of George Neavill] Also Nancy Ferrill m. John Kennedy in Wayne co in 1808 I don't know if they were from the same family? Also noted Nancy married in 1799 couldn't have a daughter married 1807? They were surely connected somehow? Idea.....maybe Nancy was married to a Neavill first, or was an unwed mother, thus, the Neville scratched out in Susan's name? Susan later taking the Ferrel name?? None of this would tell me who Nancy's father was? Nancy might have been too old to be a daughter of George or Enoch? So would other names married in 1797-1799? Maybe sisters? Where were they in 1850 when all family given names were listed? George & Enoch were dead. Ryan posted a mess of other marriages in TN & KY. I should look up the three marriages from Knox Co. I don't know if parents would be listed? ____ Barbara

I was poking around the new LDS site and found this: http://www.familysearch.org/Search/af/ancestral_file_frame.asp?recid=14211752 This info seems to say that Anna NEAVILL did marry William HAMMONDS and that they had three children: Polly, James and William. Interesting thing though is that it lists Polly's birth as before 1808, and James' before 1810. So they were born before Anna and William married? Dunno if this is correct or not--and it contradicts what Pam Lewis said about Anna being the same as Joanna and that the marriage bond with William HAMMOND didn't go through. Ryan

    3. Shirley, I found the reference to NEVELL, JOHN HEN. at ancestry.com under AIS Census Index for Virginia. This appears to be a collection of databases, and the rent rolls are attributed an early census database of Virginia. In the same database it lists NEAVILL, JNO HRS among 1770 Fauquier Co. rent rolls. Could "John Hen." be the son of John, d.1768? More importantly, has this son been indentified later in Fauquier Co. or elsewhere? At 10:16 PM 4/4/99 -0400, you wrote: >George, > >What was the source for the 1770 rent roll which showed John Hen. 3. Hello all you cousins, It is Masters time in Augusta, watch for us on TV as the entire town goes crazy over golf. And NO, I have no spare tickets for your use. Not even for Peter who failed to invite us to his birthday party some years back. In reference to a portion of the Jan/David message below, there indeed is a Neville or two in Cherokee history. Saw a book some four months back in the Augusta Genealogy Library listing folks laying claim against the government. I believe there were two Nevilles so listed. And what have I done about this thus far? Nothing other than to note that the Cherokee microfilms are in the TN Archives and that the very next time I go there to pull them for a look. Of course I was there two weeks ago, but got distracted by the will of Alexander Neville, grandson of Yelverton/Yelvaton. My interest is the Cherokee possibility (just maybe, might be, whatever) is that Grandmother Elizabeth Neville, buried in Jackson Co. TN and the wife of Yelverton/Yelvaton might be Cherokee. His Rev. War service was in NC and he was to protect the frontier and to burn out the Cherokee Nation. -----------------Any maybe brought home a war bride???----------------------------- Straw grasping but have no other leads here. It is worth a hope! As to the will of Alexander, (Dated April 5, 1890 and Probated March 2, 1891) I have seen same printed out before in another book, but I also saw a another typed copy (blue ink on white paper) this time bound into a book on Tn wills). The book also gave reference to the microfilm of same in the Jackson County Will Book, Gainsboro, TN, page 548. Handwritten and signed "A. Nevil (his mark)," Attest by T. J. Shoulders and M. W. Gaines. Please note: the PRINTED copy of the will lists, "my grandfather Yealcaton," whereas the hand written copy in the microfilm/will book states, "my Grandfather Yealvaton," Also mentioned are his mother, "Easter" as well as his aunts, "Harret Nevil and Pollie Wilson Got a question for those more in the know on wills and legal things------"signed A. Nevil (his Mark)". Does this mean that Alexander himself wrote the entire will in the will book of Jackson County? Or, did someone copy the will into the will book for him to sign just his name? Or did the clerk just copy the will along with the signatures and the will is out there somewhere? Does "his mark" adjacent the signature "A. Nevil" mean that he could not write? Or----? As to the handwriting, and not being any sort of expert, the writing is neatly done. The N's throughout the text are usually different but not always from the N in the signature. The A's look similar as do the other letters in the name to those of the text. But the Signatures of Shoulders and Gaines seem to be done in the same pen asa the rest of the will. In conclusion, HELP! Hope you had an enjoyable Easter day. tom >>> Jan & David Faulkner <[email protected]> 04/05 12:03 PM >>> .......Has anyone checked the Cherokee rolls for Nevilles (any spelling) in the KY/TN/GA/AL Appalachain area. 3. Barbara, I have not found an Enoch in the Halifax Co., NC Nevilles. Maybe someone else has. I also have not found a George in that group who would fit your George's profile. Has anyone checked the Cherokee rolls for Nevilles (any spelling) in the KY/TN/GA/AL Appalachain area. It's possible some of them married into Cherokee families since the Cherokee were in the Knox Co., TN area at the time Enoch was there. What about the female Nevilles who were in Knox Co. Has anyone checked their spouses' families? (Do you still have the data on the Neville marriages of Knox Co.?)
