This was sent to me and conflicts with what I seem to remember from those related to this line. I do not show Polly Griffith as the wife of Joseph Neville nor do I show his son Samuel the son of Polly Griffith but the addition of the Griffith middle name has me curious. Also don't show Samuel Griffith Neville wed to Malinda Drake. Would appreciate those from this line getting back to me as to the correct linage and or comments.....thanx.....Ren Neville -- ======================================================================== Ren and Judy Neville 925-516-4976 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field..... shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30 "My fathers badge, old Nevil's crest, the rampant bear chain'd to the ragged staff" Henry VI, part 2, verse 1........William Shakespeare http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=johnneville Ne vile velis "Form no mean wish" --------------7736B2E0EAC045D2FA40D6F1 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: <baharri@webtv.net> Received: from mailsorter-105-2.iap.bryant.webtv.net ([209.240.198.118]) by merlin (EarthLink SMTP Server) with ESMTP id tmqgf8.609.37tiu4s for <beschutzer@earthlink.net>; Sun, 5 Aug 2001 05:54:00 -0700 (PDT) Received: from storefull-137.iap.bryant.webtv.net (storefull-137.iap.bryant.webtv.net [209.240.198.146]) by mailsorter-105-2.iap.bryant.webtv.net (WebTV_Postfix) with ESMTP id 3BAA217C6 for <beschutzer@earthlink.net>; Sun, 5 Aug 2001 05:54:00 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from production@localhost) by storefull-137.iap.bryant.webtv.net (8.8.8-wtv-f/mt.gso.26Feb98) id FAA07178; Sun, 5 Aug 2001 05:53:56 -0700 (PDT) X-WebTV-Signature: 1 ETAsAhQiPTsVMPBQbshKXTrJwncg5CDChAIUO2zSIiWEq1Zx12t6scJ/MBfDo3k= From: baharri@webtv.net (Beccie Harrison) Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2001 07:53:56 -0500 (CDT) To: beschutzer@earthlink.net (REN AND JUDY NEVILLE) Subject: Re: Sarah Francis Smith Message-ID: <2738-3B6D41E4-544@storefull-137.iap.bryant.webtv.net> In-Reply-To: REN AND JUDY NEVILLE <beschutzer@earthlink.net>'s message of Sat, 04 Aug 2001 22:36:44 -0700 Content-Disposition: Inline Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit MIME-Version: 1.0 (WebTV) X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 Thanks Ren. 3. Shirley, I am a descendent of Richard Nevitt who was listed as Richard Nevill on the early Ark and Dove list, and he was definately a Nevitt. The Ark and Dove society and MD genealogists Robert Barnes of the MD archives, Harry Wright Newman and others recognize him as Richard Nevitt not Nevill. His name was also spelled Knevett in many early records as he was from the English Catholic Knyvett family. I am also a descendent of Elizabeth Neville (c1695-1774) who married Joseph Buchanan (c1690-bef 1738) of VA thus I am on the Neville list. 3. Ren, Fauquier Co. was formed from the western portion of Pr. William Co. in 1758 & the county seat is Warrenton. As the DC metro area has expanded, some people now live in Fauquier Co & commute daily. The following represents my current thinking but it could change as new information is found. Col. Joseph Neville born c1707 [in 1790 he was 83 & in 1792 he was 85] He m(1) Mary surname unknown. Ann [I have no clues about birth date] m William O'Bannon [tradition?; her death 25 Apr 1824 appears in the National Intelligencer] 5. War pension says George is his brother] m Sarah Jackman 7. Mary, b c1750 or c1747 [needed consent for marriage, but I don't know if 18 or 21 was the legal age then] m Richard Jackman, 2 May 1767 (bd), Fauquier Co, VA [Joseph Neville gives consent] Time line for Joseph Neville to aid in determining where children were born: 1731 & 1733 - children recorded in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co., VA 1735 - had license to operate an ordinary in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co, VA 1739-41 - had an ordinary in Caroline Co 1745 - purchased land in Pr William Co 1753 & 54 - on Pr Wm rent roll 1762 sells to his son George land he purchased in 1745; land is now in Fauquier Co. 1. Re: [NEVILLE-L] FAUQUIER NEVILLE'S
    2. Shirley L Wilcox
    3. I suspect we have more than one early Richard floating around. If you go back & look at Harry Wright Newman's The Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate, you will see that Richard most likely was a Nevitt rather than a Neville. For those not familiar with this work, I will quote some passages (p242-3). "Casual writers on Early Maryland have incorrectly transcribed Richard Nevitt as Richard Nevill [Nevell], but careful study discloses that Nevitt and Nevill were the family names of two distinct personages on the Ark and were progenitors of two separate and unrelated families in Southern Maryland. It is admitted that owing to the illegibility of the early 17th century script or poor penmanship, Richard Nevill does appear in the public records as Richard Nevill, but studying both families, one will readily agree that they were two separate entities and both left descendants. Knevett is the usual English orthography and it was frequently used in the early Maryland records." ... "In 1641 he [Richard] was still domiciled in St. George's Hundred, when he voted for the burgess to represent that district, and in March 1641/2, when all freeholders were summoned to the General Assembly, he gave his proxy to John Worthy. But in September 1642, for his non-appearance at the Assembly and his failure to send a proxy he was duly fined, but soon gave his proxy to William Broughe.* *Up to this point his name had been printed in Archives vol. 1 as Nevill, but in this instance he appears in print as Nevett for the first time." Now if you go back and look at material Peter J Neville posted 5 Nov 1997 you will see data from the MD Land Office that is on file cards at the MD State Archives. I will repeat the portion on Richard here. "Richard Nevill, 1641, Tract: St. Mary's Certificate: 100 Liber: AB&H folio:98 Patent:100 Liber:AB&H folio:98 Note: Richard Nevitt is recorded: 1651, Tract: Nevet, Charles Co & in 1647 Certificate 200 in St. Mary's Richard Nevill, 1641, Supra. St. Mary's Certificate:50 Liber:1 folio:120 Patent:50 Liber:1 folio 121" I have not studied the Maryland records to determine if I agree with the conclusion that this Richard was later called Nevitt rather than Nevill, but I did see evidence of the interchange of spellings in the early years & there were Nevetts later on in St. Mary's Co., MD. By the way, the Richard Nevill with wife Mary lived in Northampton Co., VA. But to confuse the issue there was much movement between MD & VA, especially on the Eastern Shore. 3. Shirley's recent analysis of the Fauquier records and the Jackmans was most enlightning. I imagine that everyone on the list feels just like I do when I see her name jump up on the list mail. I always know there will be good stuff coming! Her discussion today of the Middlesex connection was excellent. How can we get copies of the Vol. One #1 of the Neville Heritage Review? (I tried to order a copy but never received it). I do have #2 and wonder if there will ever be a #3? I have just one addition to make - which may be old stuff to some of you - but which I feel helps make the case for James Nevill's wife being Sarah Jackman. This is from Peggy Shomo Joyner's Abstracts of Virginia's Northern Neck Warrants & Surveys, p. 143: Joseph Taylor, assignee of William Hampton, assignee of Mr. Richard Hampton (another familiar surname for us) for whom survd; 1 Nov. 1762 - Apr. 1764; 270 a. on Cedar Run; adj. Thomas Jackman, Joseph Neavill, Col George Fairfax, Waugh Darnall. CC - Jesse Alexander & William Hampton. Surv. John Moffett. survey Consented to by Mr. Geo: Neavill, Junr. I interrupt this to mean that Thomas Jackman and Joseph Neavill lived on adjoining tracks. I am convinced that my ancestor James Nevill married Sarah Jackman, the girl next door! John (1731) were brothers via testimony and letters to Cuthbert Bullitt, then that has to put Joliffe and Wulfect out some where left of center as Richard and Ann Buroughs could not be then Gen. Now, while on the Richard and Ann kick, Shirley has Richard Neville the emigrant married to Mary who has a son James born 1655. On 10-14-1651, John Lewger demanded land for transporting persons among whom was "Ann____, now wife of Richard Neville (Maryland Land Office, Liber AB-H, folio 150). Does anyone know who this Ann is. 3. Shirley.....if you keep digging, your going to re-write the book! Being a descendant off of this line, I have never felt comfortable with Booghers assumption that James Neville was a son of John Neville and Bridget Thorsley and for some reason, got whoopsed from his fathers (unproved son) will and as I recall additionally got killed by Indians twice. I believe Shirley has pointed out in the past that additionally a case can be made by Dorothy Ford Wulfect in "Marriage of Some VA. Residents 1607-1800 Vol.II, Genealogical Publishing Co. Baltimore 1986 that shows Richard Neville of VA and Ann Burroughs and uses the sources 16V53: DAR no. 56719; Joliffe p.74, reportedly Richard Married Ann Burroughs and a son was born 1731. Seemingly this Richard could be the son of James Neville (and Dorothy Sturgis) son of the immigrant Richard Neville b. abt 1630 and Mary which Shirley has brilliantly researched. This son born in 1731 "reportedly" refers to Gen. John Neville born 7-26-1731 who married Winifred Oldham, proven brother to Gen. Joseph Neville Jr. born 12-2-1733 who married Agnes Brown. Seemingly Shirley is putting a strong case together for the separation of James Neville from John Neville and Bridget Thorsley. -- ======================================================================== Ren and Judy Neville 925-516-4976 voice/FAX "If God so clothe the grass of the field..... shall He not much more clothe you" MATT. 6:30 "My fathers badge, old Nevil's crest, the rampant bear chain'd to the ragged staff" Henry VI, part 2, verse 1........William Shakespeare http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=johnneville Ne vile velis "Form no mean wish"

    3. There is a baptismal record for Joseph Nevil, son of Joseph Nevil & his wife, 2 Dec 1733, Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co, VA that likely is the Fauquier Co. Joseph's son. We can prove that Joseph Neville Sr. had a son George (Fauquier Deeds 1:430). George had a daughter Mary who married John Rosser, as proven by his will. This Mary appears to be Mary, daughter of George & Hannah Nevill, born 20 Nov. 1726 as recorded in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co., VA. A daughter Elizabeth is recorded as born 3 Dec 1728 & d 23 Dec 1728 & the mother Hannah is in the church record as buried 31 Dec 1728. Both of George's marriages were also at Christ Church. He married Ann Symes 22 June 1725 & Mary Gibbs 20 June 1729. None of the children of the second marriage are recorded. He may have moved shortly after marriage. Note the following. The Fauquier Co. Land causes (4 Nov 1809) has a deposition by Mary Rosser aged 86 who says her father removed from Gloucester when she was a small girl and was overseer for Col. Page at a place where Francis Whiting now lives for four years & then moved to his own place where Ambrose Barnett afterward lived and died. She married when 19 & her husband died 25 or 30 years ago when she was 77 or 78 years old. Ambrose Barnett married Judith Neville, 18 July 1766 (bd), Fauquier Co., VA. She too is listed in the will of her father George Neville. I suspect we are not descendants from John of the Ark & Dove, but instead are related to the Gloucester/Middlesex families, perhaps descendants of Richard Neville. There is a John Neville, infant, who received land in Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co. from Duncan Bohannan in 1675. I think he was a son of James and grandson of Richard the immigrant who was transported to VA by Capt. Stone prior to 11 Jan. 1641. My theory & interpretation of the records, is in Volume One #1 (Winter 1998) of the Neville Heritage Review. There is also a Richard Nevill in Middlesex Co. Order Books, 1675, 1677, 1679. I don't know how he connects. On Wed, 1 Aug 2001 18:38:42 EDT Marylee144@aol.com writes: > Hi Shirley, Where do you think Joseph was born? I hadn't heard this > > information. 3. I am a descendant of Yelvaton Neville's sister Malinda (Neville) Thompson. We have no proof that Capt. William Neville was a son of Joseph, but I think it was highly likely as they were from the same area. However I am strongly convinced that Joseph was NOT born in Isle of Wight Co., VA. That is an entirely different family and someone years ago mixed up two men with the same name. There are numerous errors in the early generations that have been repeated over and over & when people see it so often they think it must be true. 3. Hi, Mary, for Joseph B. Neville son of George Neville and Rachel Earle I have in my files that he married an Elizabeth, possibly Pollock. This is undocumented info. from another researcher and they cite the time of their marriage as Oct. 1802 so if you have more accurate and documtneted info. I would definitely be interested. Joseph B. (I have seen Barger or Bargel) Neville was the brother of my ggggrandfather Georgee W. Nevillle. I have some info about Joseph B.'s final marriage but none about that early marriage or any resulting children. I know that many of George W.'s children ended up in IL. The migration pattern I have for this family is Fauquier Co, VA> Montgomery Co. TN> then ssome to W. KY and other to IL. Do you know if Joseph and Mary were divorced? I had always assumed she died young but if she lived that long and ended up in IL then obviously that is not the case or this is a different person. What do you think? Thanks for the reply, Donna >>> Marylee144@aol.com 07/30/01 09:56PM >>> Hi, I saw your email about Mary Pollock Neville. I have a Mary Elizabeth Pollock Neville married Joseph Neville about 1815. She was born about 1792 in Kentucky and died about 1870 in Franklin County, IL. I have the names of her children and spouses if you would like them. Looking forward to hearing from you.
