    3. I think you have to experiment by clicking on reply, and then looking at the "To:" blank to see where your reply will go. Different lists seem to be set up differently. If you click on "Reply all:" you can also see where your reply is going. If you want to reply privately, paste the submitter's private email address into the "To:" blank. There are early Pender newspapers as found at http://www.nebraskahistory.org/lib-arch/research/library/newspapr.htm They are on microfilm at the Nebraska State Historical Society. There is no guarantee, however, that there are no gaps in the date parameters. The last number (seven digits, the first two being 00) is a file code number--probably a poor explanation for it! 3. The question has been brought on how to reply to list postings. This list is set for a reply to automatically go back to the list, for all to see. If you want or need a reply to go directly to the sender, then replace the list address in the 'to' section of your reply with the personal email of the sender using 'cut and paste or just copy it. It is also important to remember that if a post appears from the Thurston County message board, the original poster on the message board may not be a member of the list. I usually answer the post on the list and then go to the message board (there will be a link in the message) and post my answer there as well. Hope this helps. Mary List Admin

    3. Hello Lila, First can you tell me if I am to reply to your personal email in the header of this message or do I just click on the nethurst mail and send a reply? My first experience at forum lists. thanks. I thought about Marvin being a "CIty Marshal" at another place other than Pender but have not found any periodicals to support that. He is on the 1900 Census with that occupation and other Census reports, NE and OR he is a labourer or farmer. Pender did not get its first newspaper "Sentinial" until after this time. Any other suggestions appreciated. Clearing up this identity would lead to a possible identification to remains found deceased in OR around 1920 and restore a piece of law enforcement history to NE. Thank you -- * *

    3. Newspaper research would likely turn up many mentions of the village marshal, by name. I researched Schuyler, Colfax County, and found the Chief of Police mentioned in nearly every issue of the local paper. It seems unlikely, but could your man have been a village marshal in a nearby village, and only lived in Pender when the census was taken? 3. Nebraska local government law recognises the "Village" as being an incorporated community smaller than a "City." While Pender could have (due to increase in population) become a "City" it has remained a "Village" from its founding in 1885 to this day. As to the situation of a Village Marshal in 1900 (when Mr. Clark resided in Pender) the Compiled Statutes of 1901 have the following to say (the Marshal had various other duties which are scattered throughout the code.) Sec. "1382 [Sec. 67a.] [Marshal.] The marshal shall be chief of police, and shall at all times have power to make, or order, an arrest with proper process, for any offense against the laws of the state or ordinances of the village, and bring the offender for trial before the proper officer of the village, and to arrest without process in all cases where any such offense shall be committed or attempted to be committed in his presence." In short, as a legal "Village" Pender would have had a Village Marshal at this time.

    3. I am looking for confirmation there was a "City Marshal" of Pender, Thurston, NE. The Census report shows a Man named Marvin Clark living there and employed as a City Marshal. I cannot find documentation other than this Census that Mr. Clark actually resided there or was a City Marshal. Can anyone ovver assistance? But, to answer your question, there "could" have been an obituary published in Pender, as there were family members still residing there. BUT, there are many factors to finding an obituary on a person. Obituaries cost and if a family member did not wish to pay the cost, one wasn't published; especially if the person had no local connections except for family. Sometimes the person wishes for no obituary or services. Sometimes the family is estranged. Etc., Etc. I will "assume" the Pender Times was in publication in 1965. This person was actually Charlotte Adell Amsbury. She married Hale in 1877, died in 1934. But obviously this is the wrong people. Daughter Pearl married Ed Clinkenbeard. Sons Ollie and Arthur did not marry a Peters. I see you have only posted 13 messages on this Rootsweb system (under this user name). When you post it is very important to fully identify criteria information about the people you seek. This includes their full name, the full date of birth is very important if you have it, or at least an approximation and place. Names of parents, siblings, date/place of death also help. They "came through Walthill," what time-period: Twenty years ago or 120? This is probably why you didn't receive any answer to your posting. I just don't want you to get "stuck" by someone identifying the wrong people. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
