Author: onexsmallxleafx93 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.nebraska.counties.scottsbluff/80.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I found an article relating to the DeMott family in a book that I actually just found earlier in the week in my bookcase. It's called "Families of the Pioneer", and it was written by the Rebecca Winters Genealogical Society back in the '80's. I hope this can be of some help to you. I'll copy the article from the book tomorrow and send it to you. This is only the transcript: "In 1886, Lorenzo DeMott, his son Norman, and Norman's family, left Chautauqa County New York and emigrated to Nebraska where they homesteaded along the North Platte River near what later became the city of Scottsbluff. Along the way, they had left most of their household furniture in storage at Fort Sidney (when they later returned for the furniture, they found it had been stolen). Not far from the North Platte River, on Norman's homestead, they found a grave with a half wagon wheel rim imbedded in the soil. Chiseled inscription on the wheel rim identified it to be the grave of Rebecca Winters. They cared for the grave, and later, when Norman sold right-of-way across his land to the Burlington Railway Company, he made a reservation in the sale that the lines through his property should not run over or disturb the Rebecca Winters grave. The grave became a historic landmark. Norman later sold land to the Great Western Sugar Company for the site of their sugar beet processing factory at Scottsbluff. Part of the present city of Scottsbluff sits on some of the original DeMott homestead land. Norman's wife, Florence Parks, died October 23,1891. Two of their sons, Clifton and Victor, moved from the valley to other states. The third son, Parks Earl, married Ida Margaret Andrews on January 27, 1900. They remained in the Scottsbluff-Gering area. Parks died February 1, 1951, and Ida died January 23, 1977. Their four children still reside in Gering, and most of their children still live in the area. Great Grandfather - Lorenzo DeMott b. Dec. 23, 1818 d.
