So you have the actual paper? I am searching for stuff that I know from my sister Rose Victor but would like to see myself. So you didn't have complete papers for 1921 and 1922? What about those "marriage books"? I tried to buy them but the website doesn't work. I know they have marriage books at the Omaha Public Library so do I have to go there? I have mobility problems. And Rose is also dealing with some problems and wants me to do the research. If I come to Columbus can I sit down and look at actual books, etc.? Or did Lincoln take everything? I went there years ago and they said that everything I wanted was stored in boxed and unavailable. I know they have my great grandfather's naturalization papers, etc. I just don't know where to look for stuff. Our number one question is who did our aunt Katherine "Kitty" Caffrey marry. We know she was married and had a child in Chicago in the 1920s. But she was buried in her maiden name and we're not even sure of the married name, tho it might be "Carroll." She worked for the telephone company both in Columbus and Chicago. For the other stuff we mainly want to get actual copies of the documents, etc., but we know the dates. Cate, For the most part, I used a hand-held scanner and copied portions of the actual newspaper, then transcribed them. The newspapers, though, have been filmed and are available at the Columbus Public Library. I started with the earliest papers and tried to copy (what I considered) the most important parts, but had to stop because I'm not able to get out anymore. Maybe someday I can pick up where I left off (I didn't make it to the 1920's). The actual marriage records are in books kept in a separate room, but under the control of the County Clerk's office. The "marriage books" available for sale are transcriptions of most of the data from the applications, covering the records contained in the original book. You can get a copy of the actual record from the County Clerk for $1.00, I believe. For example, this record was transcribed from Book 4, Page 110: KOST, John, 22, born c1867 in Hun, of Platte Co; parents: John Kost & Mary Dobes CAFFREY, Kittie, 19, born c1870 in IL, of Platte Co; parents: Bryan Caffrey & Mary _ Married: 16 Nov 1889 at Columbus So, you can go to the County Clerk's office and request of copy of the application found in Book 4, Page 110, if that's one you are interested in. The original record apparently doesn't give Mary's last name. If you think Kittie was divorced, you can check at the District Court and see if they can help you. You might have to do a line-by-line search for the record, because I'm not aware that the old records are indexed. I found this interesting death record: Name: Kathryn E Kost [Kathryn E Caffrey] Social Security #: 0 Sex: Female Birth Date: 3 Apr 1871 Birthplace: Illinois Death Date: 15 Sep 1946 Death Place: San Francisco Mother's Maiden Name: Plunkett Father's Surname: Caffrey It IS hard to know where to find original records. Each county/state differs on who has what, so it's always best to inquire (as you are doing) before making the trip. BTW, I "misspoke" when I said I had transcribed each and every article. I actually meant that each and every article had been transcribed......Shirley Martys, for one, has been doing a fantastic job of transcribing news from the Monroe newspapers. Thanks. Kathryn Kost is actually my Dad's aunt. The one we're looking for is his sister. Thanks a lot for your help. You are a very generous woman. I feel guilty because you asked me to type the 1955 Directory and it was taking so long I just kind of stopped. Do you still want it? It's one of the things on my "bucket list." Interesting thread - "Birthplace: Illinois" caught my attention as it always does, especially since I spent lots of time researching this phrase as relates to my GGGrandparents and their second child. Perhaps what I found will be of some value to you, perhaps not, but here goes. In a couple old references I found entries that stated - amongst early immigrants in Chicago, there was a general call for a work opportunity in Chatsworth Illinois where a mine was to be worked when enough human labor was to be found. A goodly number of Columbus NE early pioneers, in Chicago at that time, responded. In the end, the mine did not "come in" for one reason or another, and all labor amassed in Chatsworth went their separate ways. The closest Catholic church to Chatsworth at that time was St. John's located in Fairbury, just down the road. I wrote to them and the 3rd Baptismal entry was for Rosalia and Walenty Lasek's second child, Maryanna, born 1868. In the absence of specific birth information concerning Katherine Kost, St John's would be a good option. I don't know if St Johns is available on line or the LDS, but you can write to them. Would appreciate a URL if found on line or LDS film number. Effingham Illinois as well as Teutopolis Illinois (Down the road) have connections into the Columbus area as well - the Franciscans into the Columbus area.
