Sherri - Am wondering if you have run across a business named "Old Hat's" in your quest to find business names and locations. This business was operating in Columbus in the 1880's - I am sure it was not advertised in any paper, nor would it have appeared in any business listing for the time, nor was it probably discussed in polite society. It was established to take care of men's immediate physical needs while searching for a wife/homemaker. Reference: Around 1980 Miller & Paine Dept stores commissioned Dorothy Weyer Creigh, author and historian, to write a series of articles about life in the late 1800's - early 1900's to celebrate their 100 years of business - The articles appeared in the Lincoln and Grand Island Papers - there were 51 weekly articles published - later they were bound into a book called "Nebraska - Where Dreams Grow". I found reference to the above business in the article about mail order brides which I think was the 15th in the series of articles - Very interesting and well researched articles covering a variety of topics - mostly from the Lincoln area but in general there were articles about on the Germans from Russia, The Irish, the Czechs, the Scandinavians, The Mormons, and The immigration society as well as stories about blizzards of 1873 and the Schoolchildrens blizzard - book burnings and the flu epidemic of 1918 among other topics - I bought the book after finding reference to the flu epidemic of 1918 as my grandmother lost some siblings during that epidemic and I was interested in learning more about it - has turned out to be quite an interesting book - DianneH

Hello - Its doubtful that any Polish men would know anything about such a subject. A 14 hour workday on the farm leaves little time indeed for anything else. What with daily Mass in the AM and Bible Study in the PM, there's barely enough time to spend an hour or two with the wife over dinner. Private prayer has to be allotted time of course along with their visiting the hospital sick. Daily rosaries are said when they can squeeze a few minutes here and there. It was a tough life.
