    1. Re: [NEPLATTE] "Old Hats"
    2. Tom, I think these places were geared more to the single man than married men, but am sure none were turned away - or very few were turned away - The reason behind my thoughts are due to stories that have been told to me by great aunts - My gg grandmother happened to earn her living in this profession in Iowa - I wondered why my great grandfather changed his last name - but after finding some letters from my great aunt Myrtle to my grandfather and being told stories by my great aunt Helen - I kind of gathered that he didn't want anyone to know who his mother was. Side story on the same subject: i was helping a lady in the library on Monday hunt for an obituary from the 1800's. While I was paging through 1897 microfilm i found an article about a 26 year old man who was charged and convicted of moral depravity. it seems he convinced a young woman from a local brothel to come home and live with him and he was sentenced to a year in jail. It did not say if she was charged with anything but indicated that she was of questionable moral background. Dianne In a message dated 3/30/2011 11:55:54 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Hello - Its doubtful that any Polish men would know anything about such a subject. A 14 hour workday on the farm leaves little time indeed for anything else. What with daily Mass in the AM and Bible Study in the PM, there's barely enough time to spend an hour or two with the wife over dinner. Private prayer has to be allotted time of course along with their visiting the hospital sick. Daily rosaries are said when they can squeeze a few minutes here and there. It was a tough life. 1. Re: [NEPLATTE] Walenty Spies
    2. Megan, Walenty translates as Valentine I am pretty sure. I remember a Spies family in my younger days, so some must have been around in Columbus. Check out this photo from our Platte site. The line that says Third Ward School. (I remember Kippy Soulliere too who is on it) http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/county/platte/photo.html Just a quick check of Ancestry didn't show any Walenty, but plenty about Valentine Spies........not in Nebraska tho. What time period are you talking about anyway? 3. Happy upcoming LENT to everyone - The Polish first name WALENTY, sometimes WALENTYNE, WALENTIN, [female WALENTYNA] actually does not have a direct English counterpart, rather, the Polish versions were formed FROM the Latin name VALENTINUS. English speaking countries adopted the Latin version to arrive at VALENTINE, so then by circular association, we accept VALENTINE as the English version of the Polish WALENTY. The root word is the Latin "valens" which means "mighty, potent, healthy" OR from "Valens" which means an "inhabitant of the ancient province of Valentia". 2. Cris Murphy
    3. Hi Everybody! Ive finally made some headway today. I find my greatgrandfather Maurice Langan was born 1836 in Shanagolden Ireland. and his father, my great great grandfather's name was John! Still don't know his mother's name and it was just a fluke that I found him, but Im so excited! AND, Ive been looking for record of Catherine Langan's death and found it! But now that Ive found it I don't know how to proceed. What I have is "Ireland Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958" It says she was born about 1859, but she was christened June 10, 1858 so that's close. She died 1864 and it says Rathkeale. . I know this isn't Nebraska related and Im sorry but Im hoping someone has experience with familysearch.org and can tell me how to view this. Im trying to find the actual town they had lived in and the cemetery. It would appear at least at the time of Catherines death they lived in Rathkeale. from familysearch.org Catherine Langan film # 101582 Volume 5 Page 449 Digital Folder # 4200214 Image # 00147 Thanks for any suggestions on this. It was established to take care of men's immediate physical needs while searching for a wife/homemaker. Reference: Around 1980 Miller & Paine Dept stores commissioned Dorothy Weyer Creigh, author and historian, to write a series of articles about life in the late 1800's - early 1900's to celebrate their 100 years of business - The articles appeared in the Lincoln and Grand Island Papers - there were 51 weekly articles published - later they were bound into a book called "Nebraska - Where Dreams Grow". I found reference to the above business in the article about mail order brides which I think was the 15th in the series of articles - Very interesting and well researched articles covering a variety of topics - mostly from the Lincoln area but in general there were articles about on the Germans from Russia, The Irish, the Czechs, the Scandinavians, The Mormons, and The immigration society as well as stories about blizzards of 1873 and the Schoolchildrens blizzard - book burnings and the flu epidemic of 1918 among other topics - I bought the book after finding reference to the flu epidemic of 1918 as my grandmother lost some siblings during that epidemic and I was interested in learning more about it - has turned out to be quite an interesting book - DianneH ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. Re: [NEPLATTE] Canadian research
    2. I found this really interesting. My husbands paternal ancestors were from the Palatinate.(they arrived in 1739) I knew that some of them went to the Netherlands, Switzerland and on to America.......but I had never read about some going to Ireland! I wonder if they Irished their names (is that a word?lol) "The scene was set for a mass migration. At the invitation of Queen Anne in the spring of 1709, about 7 000 harassed Palatines sailed down the Rhine to Rotterdam. From there, about 3000 were dispatched to America, either directly or via England, under the auspices of William Penn. The remaining 4 000 were sent via England to Ireland to strengthen the protestant interest. Although the Palatines were scattered as agricultural settlers over much of Ireland, major accumulations were found in Counties Limerick and Tipperary. As the years progressed and dissatisfactions increased, many of these folk seized opportunities to join their compatriots in Pennsylvania, or to go to newly-opened settlements in Canada. 3. Another day in "paradise" - or so we are led to believe. 1. www.butlercountygallery.com/drupal/flagunk has about a million old photo's displayed looking for names. Excellent site, worth your time to look. Sure looks like a female Schmek on page 1. 2. While looking, I recommend you try my super-secret "Immigrant Dip" to give you energy to cope with all the excitement if you find something !! -- 1 tube container of Jimmy Deans frozen sausage, normal or spiced, fried to rare then pour out grease. -- 1 container RO-TEL (normal or spiced) and 1 container cream cheese, mixed with sausage in frying pan over heat till it melts. Stir it to blend. Put in bowl, let set few minutes, then eat with chips. You'll not regret the experience. 3. www.fordnagle.com is a site that collects identified old photo's and gives them to Family members when and if found. Search alphabetically and use the "find" option on the computer by typing "Neb" in. All "Neb" entries are then highlighted. Have a gud un !!

    2. Cris........do you have a subscription to Ancestry? There are at least 13 people who are researching Maurice Sr. and Jr. One lists as many as 10 sources for info. All of them have the same birth date, and Kerry, Limerick Ireland as birthplace, then settled Platte Co. You should check it out or have someone else do it. You might get really lucky with someone elses research like I have. I am not saying the finds are definite.....but can't hurt to try. This is in the Family Tree link. 3. I'm so excited, I have an online copy of the marriage cert of James Carrig and Ellen Langan. Married St. Paul's Toronto County of York on 11/24/1856! So The entries I have found in (I think Margaret Curry and another source) are incorrect. I had a feeling they were but without proof... Sadly nothing is filled in on the cert except the 2 witnesses names and neither are a LANGAN or CARRIG. James name is spelled CARRAGE on the cert. -- Life may not be the party we hoped for..
