    3. Mike, I did some investigating and think we have found where the store was. However, it appears that they were not owners or perhaps owned but not in their name. In the 1915 City Directory it lists E Henry Ott and wife Dora C. It says clerk at the "Held & Clark". Held and Clark is listed under the stores as Hardware and is located 501 W 13th. That address is now located at 13th street and 25th avenue which is a one story building and there is a small one story building on the west side of that building. In the 1923 city directory it does not list where he works but says he is a clerk. In the 1930 city directory it only shows his wife Dora C. I found a very short one or two senctence obit for Dora that states she died in December 1945 in Walnut, Iowa. Shirley

    3. If you have problems contacting him, you can call Stanley Tworek Junior (Stash) who owns and farms the adjacent property. He'll know how to contact Walter and I know that Stash' is in the phone book. 3. Can anyone help Alice locate the building where “E.H. Ott & Co. – Dealer in Hardware, Stoves, Tinware” was located? (around 1915-1925). Unfortunately, I think it must have been after the 1915 Columbus directory and before the 1930 Columbus directory. Alice has a nice picture of the building if that would help anyone recognize the façade (looks like maybe early 11th street location?). Would the Platte County Historical society have anything? This would be the family of Ernst Henry Ott and Dora C. Ott. Mike From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, March 28, 2011 9:33 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Can you help Mike: My Dad, no deceased, lived for years in Columbus. A sister & I are coming to IA & NE to see what background info we can find. Our grandfather had a hardware store there, Ott's Hardware and Tin. We have a picture of the building, brick 1 story and the building next to it also looks as tho it says Ott on it. We have no clue where it might be, altho we have grandmas home address and found out it recently sold. We would really like to know if the Hardware Store building still exists, and hoping you might know, or could guide us to someone who does. My grandparents were E.H. Ott and Dora C Ott. Grandpa died in 1927 at St Mary's Hosp & Gma in 1946. Dad was Wallace Ott born in 1909 (in Iowa) moved to NE early and graduated from HS in Columbus and worked as a "soda jerk", I think Tooleys and later for Nash Dietz & Nash Finch. 3. True enough - Alcohol used in excess has always been a problem and it affects anyone. I've come to that conclusion long ago. Its a personal choice, a sickness, a disease when used to excess, and generally the problem is supressed by Family and friends. During my youth (several decades ago), it was more a social stigma to some, normality in the life of others. Its always the excessive use that causes problems. Its legal and will always be due to the fiasco with prohibition so the politicians won't touch the issue. I don't know if there is an answer to this problem, but today, the issue has to be more serious when one considers rampant drug use along with the alcohol. 2. DIANNE.............enjoyed your post, though I think Tom had his tongue firmly imbedded in his cheek when he made his! lol I expect there were lots of married men who frequented the brothels everywhere. They usually just didn't tell on each other.......just like nowadays. Interesting story about your gggrandmother. When you read the old newspapers you see that things happened back then like always, including lots of murder, incest, abuse etc. I expect that alot of the women and men in Columbus for instance were deemed insane when actually they were alcoholics or going through menopause! It sure helped me with my hubbys side. Recently, my daughter, who lives in Tucson now, became acquainted with a distant cousin none of us had ever met! He lives in Lincoln, Ne but winters in Tucson. He, wife and daughter have become good friends, and he told her that he had just met a Bomberger from Maryland in Tucson. The Maryland Bombergers are the original family! I suddenly feel the tree sprouting more branches. Oh yes..............and Happy Birthday to the big guy, Tom!!!! 3. Yes - Moral depravity - sighhh, well, the truth be known, I suppose the "End Results" are more widespread than one would ordinarily think - kept so by the stoic adherence to the social and religious norms + values of the times. Then again, the subject has always been "hiding" right out in the open for all to see, if they wished to see - kinda like missing the tree because they were looking at the forest. Personally, I have read from many sources over the years, that for one reason or the other, many females gravitated towards providing such services - a matter of supply and demand I would guess, and from this pool of femininity then, pioneer wives would be "found". I suppose that if I were a female during this time period, I would have done the same - of course I wouldn't have made much since I would undoubtedly have carried the title of "ugliest female in Columbus" [smile] and the tighty whities would have baffled them. I think that probably, today, in our ardor associated with genealogy, we tend to romanticize the pioneer times, when in reality, most lived right on the edge, where the difference of a penny may well determine whether one eats that day or not. I suppose at times like this, the immigrant Family would have questioned their sanity in leaving the old country, but then again, their pioneer lives in Nebraska may still have been preferable. What a strange world we live in.
