    3. Bill, My THOMAS family was from West Pommern, east of Stettin, Prussia (today's Szczecin, Poland). I have a wonderful map of the area that includes both the German and current Polish names of the villages, that I received from my cousin in Szczecin. The map includes a URL http://www.hoeferverlag.de and an e-mail address [email protected] - check out page http://www.hoeferverlag.de/onlineshop/englisch/polen/index.php which lists the maps for Poland. Map PL006 is middle Silesia... Hope you find what you need there. -- Marge Galus Sandlier <>< Forget Me Not http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~sandlier/ ---- Bill <[email protected]> wrote: ============= Hello All, Has anyone done research in Silesia? Would love to find something like the Austrian Military Maps of the 1800's for this area... but so far only blurry and congested maps. I have found on www.yasni.de, when searching for my surname variant of Thanel/Thonel, several Thanel/Thonel family trees/stammbaums. These names are in southern Silesia just to the north of Bergstadt where my forefathers and possibly the Columbus Reinke families lived. I have seen the name Thanel in early Platte, Custer and Polk Countys. Any suggestions will be welcomed!! Bill Thoendel Hoskins, NE

    3. Your information on Illinois applies to my great grandfather, who left his wife and firstborn there while he went down to New Orleans to visit another sister who lived there and joined the Union Army. So his name is on that Columbus Monument, Bernard Caffrey. His son, my grandfather, was born in Ireland but all the others were born in Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois or Columbus. He applied for a homestead in Platte County in 1880. Kitty was his granddaughter, born in Columbus in 1891. Lassek Sent: Monday, April 11, 2011 10:07 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NEPLATTE] Illinois comment Interesting thread - "Birthplace: Illinois" caught my attention as it always does, especially since I spent lots of time researching this phrase as relates to my GGGrandparents and their second child. Perhaps what I found will be of some value to you, perhaps not, but here goes. In a couple old references I found entries that stated - amongst early immigrants in Chicago, there was a general call for a work opportunity in Chatsworth Illinois where a mine was to be worked when enough human labor was to be found. A goodly number of Columbus NE early pioneers, in Chicago at that time, responded. In the end, the mine did not "come in" for one reason or another, and all labor amassed in Chatsworth went their separate ways. The closest Catholic church to Chatsworth at that time was St. John's located in Fairbury, just down the road. I wrote to them and the 3rd Baptismal entry was for Rosalia and Walenty Lasek's second child, Maryanna, born 1868. In the absence of specific birth information concerning Katherine Kost, St John's would be a good option. I don't know if St Johns is available on line or the LDS, but you can write to them. Would appreciate a URL if found on line or LDS film number. Effingham Illinois as well as Teutopolis Illinois (Down the road) have connections into the Columbus area as well - the Franciscans into the Columbus area. I am searching for stuff that I know from my sister Rose Victor but would like to see myself. So you didn't have complete papers for 1921 and 1922? What about those "marriage books"? I tried to buy them but the website doesn't work. I know they have marriage books at the Omaha Public Library so do I have to go there? I have mobility problems. And Rose is also dealing with some problems and wants me to do the research. If I come to Columbus can I sit down and look at actual books, etc.? Or did Lincoln take everything? I went there years ago and they said that everything I wanted was stored in boxed and unavailable. I know they have my great grandfather's naturalization papers, etc. I just don't know where to look for stuff. Our number one question is who did our aunt Katherine "Kitty" Caffrey marry. We know she was married and had a child in Chicago in the 1920s. But she was buried in her maiden name and we're not even sure of the married name, tho it might be "Carroll." She worked for the telephone company both in Columbus and Chicago. For the other stuff we mainly want to get actual copies of the documents, etc., but we know the dates. 3. So you have the actual paper? But she was buried in her maiden name and we're not even sure of the married name, tho it might be "Carroll."
