    2. Dove Sky
    3. After a struggle to save the Granville cemetery that began in the year 2000 and ended some 6 years later in the Nebraska Supreme court. The Granville cemetery was saved from total destruction by a farmer and the farmer was told he could no longer run his Center Pivot over the graves. Granville was established by the early settlers in Granville Twp. The first of them coming in 1873. Most of the group had roots in New York so the named Humphrey after Humphrey,New York and Granville after Granville, New York. In 1881 they formed the Cemetery Association and incorporated a one acre cemetery. Among the 11 men who signed the deed of incorporation were 5 know Civil War Veterans, one having escaped from Andersonville prison during the Civil War. After winning the court case and restoring the grounds, I applied to the Nebraska State Historical Society for a Historical Marker. The marker was approved and it was installed last October. Now on 22 May 2011 at 1:30 PM we plan to dedicate the marker and the grave of Francis H. Baker a Civil War Veteran buried there. The dedication by a Civil War re-enactment group will be a real exciting thing to see. We have a very nice invitation made up on two sides of a page, showing the maker and other information. Any one who wants to have a copy of the invitation email me at [email protected] and I will send a copy to you. Please come and join us if you live close enough to make the drive to Cornlea, Ne. 2. Nothing like getting home late on Mothers Day to some good genie laughs and stories! DianeL...........hilarious and now we know why Auntie Ann left New Braska for the safety of New Jersey. Which was worse? The Indians or the mob? We know the whole story. Funny some of you mention the stories of people thinking there were cowboys and Indians in Nebraska. When I came to California in the late 50's the same thing happened here. But for someone in Nebraska to fear for someone in Dakota? Well, there was that Indian school in Genoa! Tom......thanks for another history lesson! KathyB ____________________________________________________________ Groupon&#8482 Official Site 1 ridiculously huge coupon a day. 1. [NEPLATTE] Ahhhh - Those ancestors of ours !!
    2. Thomas E. Lassek
    3. They came West on railroads, in covered wagons, on horses, and the Saints pulling their carts. They weren't the first though, the Romans used similar transportation, but in a different way, in a different time. Regardless, its all immaterial now anyway. Why ?? Because we have the Space Shuttle of course !! There's rationale at every turn, in every nook and cranny. So, why not start with the RR tracks ?? The US standard for RR tracks is exactly 4 feet, 8.5 inches between rails. An odd spacing for sure, but, that's the way they were built in England, and the experienced English expatriates designed our RR's prior to mass immigration. Still an odd number - but, those same expat's also built the old English Tramways, a system of roadways in use prior to the RR, and they used the same tools and Jigs that they used for wagons that traveled on the Tramways. But why 4 feet 8.5 inches ?? If they tried other spacing, the wagon wheels would almost certainly break in a few miles on the virtually permanent, deep and packed Ruts on the Tramways of Europe and England. It appears that the original Tramways were built by Imperial Rome and the uniform ruts were made by their War Chariots. All Chariots were made according to uniform specifications. But still, why 4 feet, 8.5 inches ?? Because silly, the Chariots were pulled by 2 horses and the standardized distance across the side-by-side horse butts is 4 feet, 8.5 inches !! But the Space Shuttle ?? Well, as known, the Space Shuttle requires 2 Solid State Rocket Boosters at takeoff. The boosters are made at the Thiokol plant in Utah, and yes, here it comes. The boosters are shipped to the launch site via RR and there are tunnels along the way, and we all now know that the tunnels are made to accommodate a train whose width on the tracks is slightly larger than 4 feet, 8.5 inches, a standardized measurement from over 2,000 years ago, and based on the width of 2 horses butts side-by-side !! If only our ancestors knew !! Tomasz

    2. Shirley - your email made me laugh and remember - when i was growing up here in Oregon in the 50's an 60's - 10 miles from an Indian Reservation - my uncle from Omaha used to call my mom every month and fret about us living so close to danger - My mom used to love fueling his imagination by describing the "stockade" walls around our small town and how every man had to take their turn doing time in the stockade towers "looking out" for raiding parties etc - He also believed we still had old crank phones and had to go through an operator to make a local call - living in a small town with a small telephone co op - that was not all that far from the truth - but he always had questions about the "wild" western state we were living in and believed we all packed 6 irons on our hips - lol - dianne In a message dated 5/8/2011 5:15:03 P.M. She's a very meticulous research person and newer to genealogy but is somewhat reluctant to join a group since she's never done so before. Anyway, I continue my efforts. Does anyone have the immigration information for the Rosno's ?? The ship and date ?? To ass

    2. Marge and others on the list.........I know you will forgive my poor memory, but sometime back, there was a discussion (or else it was in my own mind lol) about Michael Mostek and Mary Kula or Kuta. They had come from Poland to Chicago and then to Platte Co in a covered wagon. That is all I knew about them, but it seems that someone came up with more. Does anyone else remember this conversation? Some time ago, I received an email from Valene Contor who was searching for the 2 Rosno's and it took me awhile to answer her, so today I finally did.
