Hello all - Nothing like a genealogical mystery to keep one's blood flowing, no ?? Thinking about this a bit, it would be reasonable to state that Mr. Bill's records and others were removed from their repository and used in support of another legal action somewhere within the system and were kept as part of that action under file. No Xerox machines back then. Either that or it was simply misfiled, but the odd's don't favor a misfiling since others have their records missing as well. I'm wondering if possibly the records were refiled under the surname of the other spouse involved ?? The file must have been there on the date that the index was made or it wouldn't be noted. I am a bit surprised in that the standard file separator (various sizes and colors) wasn't put in when the file was removed so as to indicate that the file was removed for another action. Again, it wouldn't be logical to assume that someone simply stole the file as other files are in the same predicament. The mystery continues. Tom - think my ancestors arrived in Nemaha County in 1854 -Supposedly they came with Richard Brown who founded Brownsville and with the future governor of NE - last name of Furnace or something like that - I am not up on my governors from any state other than OR - think they arrived from MO and it was mostly Indians then - One of my ggg grandmothers brothers was scalped by Indians in that area - and that's why i love the Library of congress web site with the old newspapers on it - there are newspapers from Brownville and I got quite a few articles about My Edwards family - but still am anxious to visit the area and see what I can find for myself - and as far as recording devices etc - my son sets them up and then just tells me which buttons to push - lol - I am not up on the latest in electronics - computers - yes - anything else I am sorely lacking in operating skills - I have gps on my phone and wouldn't even begin to know how to use it - I am lucky if I can get to my voicemail - lol - Dianne

" ***** Well shoot - you don't need any help from me concerning this recording information for posterity stuff. I think I'll just sit back and take lessons. I am probably most excited about visiting Nemaha CO - my ggg grandmother was the first white woman in that part of NE and I have found great stories about her on the net - my ggg grandfather was a minister and the church he preached in is still standing - it is now a museum and I am really looking forward to seeing it - plus I hope to find where they are buried and where my gggg grandparents are buried in Brownville. ***** That's impressive. 4 Greats. That had to put them in Nemaha County in the very earliest of years. I'm not sure what type records they had back then, or even if they had any records. This may well be a challenge for you to find info on them. Of course, your 4 great was a preacher, so that should be a plus. I'm thinking that if you had a few surnames, it may be possible to look at some of the earliest of entries in the Family Bible if you can find it. The trip sounds interesting. Your Family then had to be there during the times when there was very real danger to the settlers from Native Americans. They must of had some stories to tell. Tom
Shirley - Yes you sent me the school records and I will have to say - they were a big hit at the family reunion this year - I always try to take something extra along to the reunions and this year it was the school records and old photos I had scored from second and third cousins - a picture of my grandpa and his siblings when he was 5 was also a big hit - I am looking forward to the Platte County visit and visiting the museum and meeting some of the kinseekers etc - I know the old family farm is no longer standing but would love to find the location and see what it looks like now as well as the house my aunt always talks about in Columbus - I am piling up a list of things to take with me - (thanks Tom about the suggestion of a recorder) and I am also thinking it would be wise to take along a brief family history of the various families and their locations at various times due to the number of families I want to look for information on - My NE families include: Derby, Prohaska, Cougil, Bailey, Harper, Edwards, Bricker, and Ashpaugh and my IA families include: Derby, Bailey, Prohaska, Stewart, Edinger and Lawrence. And even though she is not on this list - want to tell you how wonderful a lady named Carol who works at the Knight Library in York NE has been. not only has she sent me a ton of articles on my Prohaska family that answered a lot of questions - she has just been very patient with my constant requests for information. Am hoping I can locate a platt map and someone will be able to help me locate the actual address of the family farm - 5 miles East of Charleston is not much to go on for an address - but do want to go out and see if the farmhouse my great grandfather built is still standing - I have a couple of pictures of it - If it is - I may even go knock on the door and explain who I am and ask if I can walk around and take pictures - but am especially interested in say Hi to you Shirley - you have been great about sending me the school records and stuff and plan on taking you to lunch when i arrive in Platte County - Dianne In a message dated 9/10/2011 4:06:13 P.M. LOL Tom - have to tell you if I ever told my son or family that I was buying a Harley - I would be under the constant watchful eye of 2 sons, 3 grandsons, 3 brothers and at least a dozen nephews and nieces (not to mention cousins) - not to stop me from buying one - but to be the first to borrow it - I would never seen it again - lol - I have been writing and researching genealogy groups and libraries and emailing several of them about information they have - I plan on buying a couple extra sd cards for my camera and my oldest son has all the latest gizmos and gadgets when it comes to recording stuff - he has no problem with me using any of them - in fact he gives me lessons on how to get the most use out of them - so will tell you my sneakiest use of them to date - Every so often - my female cousins have a luncheon for just the "girls" - we try to do one a year - last one I took along one that looked like an I Pod - when I walked in - I told my cousin that my ipod had died and I needed to charge the battery and she told me to plug it in right next to the table - so not only did I get a ton of great old stories from aunts and cousins - I had them all on tape and not one of them realized they were being recorded - my aunts will tell great old stories about their childhood and siblings - but not if you are recording them - they tend to clam up and not say much - so catching them unaware was great - my sister is the only one who suspected and she didn't say a word - might have been the hostile glares I gave her every time she looked towards the recording device. But she did ask me afterwards if I had recorded it all - needless to say - all my cousins were shocked when i provided them with a copy of the recording. I thought that probably somewhere up on the web there would be such a site or sites. I PC8 the referral. Good for you - visiting Nebraska. Make it a worthwhile trip and plan it out as best you can. I think you are on a good list for this "excursion". A good portion of "Genies" are located in Nebraska. You need to marry up with them - a bribe would be good (chuckle). Just tell them you'll buy the first beer !! Seriously, go while you can. No one's getting any younger in preparation for the excursion, if you follow my drift. "Forbidden You To Go" ??? Wrong thing for him to say if you ask me. That would probably firm up your resolve more than anything else. If I were in your city I'd go with you. It would be a blast. A couple things that I have learned on these "outings" with respect to genealogy. Take your good digital and become familiar with the "taking a movie" section. You won't regret it. Another thing would be for you to take one of these small modern tape recorders that you keep in your pocket. Today, they'll record for somewhere around 150 hours or more before it's filled up. The thing is that you'll talk to lot's of people and see lot's of things and you only get one good shot at some of this stuff. A lot of the info that's given to you will be lost, even if you try and write it down. One's memory is not all that "exact" either. Lastly, if you have the room, take some of those old photographs we all have in shoe boxes. You may well indeed find out who they are or at least you'll get lot's of good stories for posterity. This will also prompt others to take out their old photo's as well. When they do, you can always take a high resolution of the photo. Again, the best way to plan this out, in my opinion, is to contact fellow genealogists here on this list and ask for their help and referrals as to where to look. All of us can surely offer a day or two individually in pursuit of our hobby. Nothing like a "Random Act of Kindness" to cement relationships. You can have some fun with your youngest son if you want to put things into perspective (chuckle). In passing, just tell him that you are considering the purchase of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle so you can view the country in the way it was meant to be seen. Hehehehehehe - betcha that he'll take that vacation - (smile). Shirly - Thanks for remembering my questions. If you have time, fine, but don't worry about devoting your life to it. I wouldn't want to put anyone out. "I think I am glad that I am not from the Polish Heritage" - Well, you know that St. Peter is actually an extremely logical and rationale Saint, and as such, he simply sends the Poles through the gate without questioning them too much, obviously because he feels that the Polish People are probably the holiest of all that ask for entry, so he just doesn't want to waste time during the processing in period. If you find something in the newspapers, I may well make you an "Honorary Polish Person". When you "process through" - he'll just shoo you in along with the rest of us. You do super work on "Find a Grave" - I refer to it periodically to see what new info is up there. You've made your mark in this genealogy business for sure. If statistics are available, I think you will be pleasantly surprised to find the amount of people that refer to it and where they are located. I hear about your efforts constantly, all good. I agree, the Polish surnames seem unpronounceable, however, I have to say that it's really a simple matter to pronounce the names. Polish is a phonetic language. Words are pronounced, without error, the way they are spelled today. If one has a "cheat sheet", merely the Polish alphabet and pronunciation card, you'll go a long way towards "Honorable Polish Status". The name looks terrible in spelling, but if you go slowly and pronounce the letters and diacriticals s they're meant to be pronounced, you will get a pronounceable surname easily recognized by Poles. Works every time. Yes, surnames change in spelling over the eons and will constantly change in the future. Take mine for instance : LASSEK today, LASEK in Poland, Pospieszała to start with. Lot's of history. OK - I'm working with Sister Sally Smolen, the daughter of Sally Smolen who was married to John Smolen Sr., Cousin Dean and Ron Lassek and John Smolen, plus Paul Brundy. We're open to others as well. By inception, we were all to reduce our old photo's to digital and put them on a CD to send to everyone. This hasn't been fully applied yet, so I have volunteered to have the photo's sent to me and I digitalize them and make the CD's, then send the original's back if and when they want them. We've circulated 1 CD since the start of the project about a month ago, well over 100 photo's and they're steadily being identified. Of those in the project, they simply ID the photo by the number it is given automatically on the digital scan, by example "CVS 0001" then they send everyone an email with the proper identification of the photo. All then use the "rename" portion of our computer to change the "CVS 0001" to the actual person, by example "Clara Lassek, 1941, Columbus" then save it. From this point onward, the photo is ID's with the name and other specifics. The CD can then be reproduced and sent to others. Individual photo's can be attached to email or the CD taken to Walmart to have a "professional" photo made, any size. One can also simply print out a copy on printer friendly photo paper. I took the photo's to digital via my digital camera which allows me to transfer the likeness in high definition, so you can make paper photo's any size or blow it up to look closely at it for identification. The process is in it's infancy, but it works fine. I have volunteered to keep it moving by doing some of the things required to keep it progressing. I absorb postage costs and other costs that may be required. I consider genealogy a hobby and am glad to have some of this stuff identified and kept forever. I think I am glad that I am not from the Polish heritage. Wow, those names are impossible to pronounce much less spell. Bet there are all types of stories behind the different spellings or when the spellings were changed. Anyway, if you have family buried there, take a quick look and send a message through the "Edit" button if you see something....Shirley > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Diane - I appreciate the info for unknown photo's. Tom - Good luck in your photo efforts - have you looked into posting your unknown photos on dead fred or ancient faces - both sites are free and have places to post unknown photos - I am working on planning a genealogy trip to NE and IA next spring. Am excited about going and doing first hand research - have not been able to find anyone to travel with me - they all say yes but come up with excuses and I have been trying to put this trip together for 3 years now - so am going alone if I have to - but am really excited to go - my youngest son has forbidden me to go alone and I told him - if you dont want me to go alone then take vacation and go with me - but I am not putting it off any longer - I am going - end of discussion - all of my research in NE will be in the counties of Nemaha, Richardson, York, Seward and Platte. I also plan on going to western Iowa on this trip and doing some research there as well. Just wish I had time to fit in KS and SD - but wont be able to on this trip - maybe in a couple of years - Does anyone have suggestions as to places to see and things to do while I am there - I havent been in NE since I was a child - and believe me - that was many many years ago. Sounds like a fantastic idea Tom. We all have those albums or shoeboxes full of the unknown. I would be among probably quite a few to hear your process and how you are successfully achieving what seems to be the almost impossible before I am gone and my kids say "why in the world did she keep all of these pictures of people she didn't even know?". Also, Tom, I am still working on the problem you presented back a month or so ago. Each week I have been scanning newspapers trying to find a hint to giv eyou an answer but so far nothing. But, I have not given up. And on one more note, the weather has been beautiful and I have been out doing what I love best and taking pictures of headstones. One of my last quests was at the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in the Krakow area. Hello - I'm in the midst of a Photo effort, along with others, to identify all the Lassek photo's that the Family has been collecting all these years. Our system seems to be working.
