Have you tried contacting the Nebraska State Historical Society to see if they can locate a death record? Of course there may not have been one since those records were not kept too well prior to 1904. Here are some places to try for assistance. JOSEPH FITZPATRICK was born August 15, 1832 in Ireland and died January 27, 1911 in Davey, Lancaster co. NE. CATHERINE DAVEY FITZPATRICK was born May 17, 1941 in Ireland and died June 24, 1901. Their children: Edward J. - May1861, John - 1863, David - 1864, Winifred - May 1867, Daniel Dennis - August 25, 1869 (married to Hattie Julana Shumaker), William A - October 1874, Elizabeth - September 8, 1880. I am looking for any information on Joseph or Catherine. Cannot find a death certificate or any death information on Catherine which is my main goal right now. Have death cert. for Joseph, but it doesn't give any information. Wrote to the church and they couldn't help either. Joyce Johnson Melbourne, Florida
Hello, everyone. My most elusive ancestor was Barbara STEINMAN. On Sept. 27, 1894, she gave birth to my grandfather and soon put him up for adoption with a private adoption agency in Lincoln, NE. He was adopted by Daniel & Emily Ann Skinner of the Alvo area and named Alva Albert. Years later the adoption agency told him that Mrs./Miss? Steinman (or her family) owned some land in Kansas which she had wanted to go to my grandfather. The agency wouldn't tell him any more details. I found her listed as Barby Steinman & a servant of Joseph Whittman of 939 H St. in the 1900 Lincoln census (sheet 4, line 89). She had been born in Nov., 1853, in Switzerland. On the 1910 census the Whittmans had a different servant. She probably would have been alive then, at age 57, but I don't know where. Maybe I should check the soundex index for 1910, if there is one. Any help, suggestions, or questions about possible connections with Barbara Steinman are very welcome. With thanks in advance, Danielle Craig dmcraig31088@home.com
My elusive ancestor is John M (Millard, Millar or Miller) THOMPSON. He was born in Steubenville Ohio in 1863 - unknown district Died 1941 in Lincoln. John's parents were James THOMPSON and Nancy MILLAR (Miller) both born and married in Tully, Derry, Ireland. ?? We do not know when James and Nancy came to North America or where they landed. John THOMPSON married in 1887 Amanda Elizabeth SWIGART (spelling shown on document hand written by their son) She was said to have been born 1862-1863 in Missouri. ?? James THOMPSON and his family (believed to have another son Joseph H. THOMPSON b March 22, 1865) moved from Steubenville to near Cameron Missouri and then on to Doniphan Nebraska. ?? We do not know years for the moves. John and Amanda had a son, Clinton Adam THOMPSON born Dec 8, 1888 in either Hansen (Adams County) or Doniphan (Hall County) Nebraska (I have seen both in family notations) ?? John is said to have been a farmer who "farmed near Doniphan". We believe he may be the farmer listed: "J.M. Thompson-Hansen" on the "List of Farmer's in Hall County 1890-1891, State Gazetteer Farmer's Directory." Listed under "T" ?? He may also be the farmer listed "The 1890-91 Farmers Directory of Adams and Hall Counties lists a J. M. Thompson in South Platte precinct of Hall County. He is a renter and his post office address is Hansen." We know at some point the family, still including James and his wife, as well as John and Amanda and Clinton (and maybe by then a daughter Grace), plus Joseph, moved to Lincoln, where family notations say John THOMPSON owned the John Deere dealership there. (John Deere records do not go back that far to confirm.) ?? ?? John may be the J listed in "Adams County, Nebraska '1890 Nebraska Directory' Thompson, J M Kenesaw Adams Nebraska 1890" ?? John may be the J listed in " 'Buffalo County, Nebraska Directory, 1890-91' J M Thompson Luce Buffalo Nebraska 1890" ?? John may be the John who is listed "1890-1 Business Directory & Farmer's List of the Nebraska State Gazetteer LANCASTER COUNTY - BUSINESS DIRECTORY LINCOLN DIRECTORY. 275 Thompson JM, business mgr, The Farmers Alliance, cor S 11th and M" We do know James, Nancy, John, Amanda and Joseph are buried in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska, Lot 540-Sec 17. But we have not been able to find documentation on any of the above, with exception of cemetery. Lots of "maybes". Confirmed: Clinton THOMPSON attended University of NE, graduating in 1909 BSME. We would like to know where he married Amanda....Ohio, Missouri or Nebraska Where he was...Hall or Adams county and/or even Buffalo county...before Lincoln When was he finally in Lincoln....appears it could possibly have been for a period of 40 years.... Any confirmation on any above is certainly appreciated. With kindest regards, and wishing you a happy holiday season... Judy Shone Oakville, Ontario hutchone@bserv.com
Hi all, well since the list has been pretty quiet and we are getting close to the end of the year, why don't all of you post your most elusive ancestor that was in Lancaster County, the time period and town if known. If you have any surnames that may link to your MOST WANTED ancestor and they were not necessarily in Lancaster County but were in neighboring counties, you might also mention them. Please REMEMBER-- do NOT hit your reply button to my message. Begin a new e-mail and put a constructive subject in your subject line that will grab the attention of the other list members. I have made some changes to the Mail list home page if you would like to take a look. Also the Lancaster County website has been getting a new look and the Index and Resource pages are festive. We are always looking for materials to be added and we encourage your submissions. Types of materials we are looking for include: Family histories, biographies, photos, obituaries, tombstone photos & inscriptions, cemetery lists, etc. Because of copyright laws, only materials dated before 1925 or written by the submitter will be accepted. Contributions would be greatly appreciated. For more information on how you can help check the NEGenWeb Project Help Wanted page. Please direct any comments or problems with these pages to: Kathie Harrison at NelliBlu28@aol.com and be sure to put Lancaster County website in the subject line. Please consider helping add to these pages by submitting your family group sheets, church lists, photos, tombstone inscriptions and tombstone photos, memories, school lists, biographies & obituaries. Dear List members - Apparently several days ago when the BADTRANS-B Worm/Virus was hitting alot of people's e-mail I was told some wrong information which I passed on to my lists. I have since found out many factors that I didn't know. I would like to advise you all to see the links to the sites that will help answer questions regarding virus/worms, protection from them and the importance of a very up-to-date virus program &/or firewall. I do not profess to be a computer expert but simply want to help protect my list members from having their computers infected. I put up a page with these links for you. Please visit this page and be sure to upgrade if your anti-virus program is not current, because it is very important. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/nelanc/hoax-virus_links.htm l If the above URL splits up please go to the Mail Lists Jump Page to access the link: <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lists.html">Lists Jump page - Rootsweb Mail Lists</A> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lists.html Thank you. I am going to post this for my list members as this newest virus/worm is very nasty and prevalent right now. Please do not post any questions about this to the list. As Listowner I am posting this to help my list members only: It is called "W32/BadTrans.b@MM". It is quite different from the original "W32/BadTrans@MM" virus. First, here's how it works. When a user becomes infected, the next time he/she reboots the computer, the virus goes through the user's email program and looks for unread emails in all the mailboxes. It picks some of these, makes a reply to them, and sends itself. Here's the kicker. It uses the infected persons email address as the sender, BUT it adds "_" (underscore) before the real address. The subject line will probably have nothing but "RE:" (nothing else). The body of the email will be completely blank. There are no attachments, so there is nothing to click. The virus is embedded in the body, with cute code to hide it; the recipient never sees anything but a totally blank message. (I'm adding this after I finished the email. I just discovered a problem when searching for FROM: addresses that start with <_. There is a problem with people who have their email program set to show both their name and email address in the FROM: header. If such a person is infected, mail from him/her will show, in the header, something like the following: "John Doe" <_johndoe@wherever.com> The FROM: element in the header you see before you open the email will show only "John Doe". That's a problem. Either set up a filter to divert infected emails to a separate mailbox, or make sure your system is COMPLETELY protected before you open or preview any more emails.) In addition, the virus tries to dig through the infected person's computer and send email addresses, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, passwords, etc., back to the writer of the virus. Anyone using OUTLOOK (not Outlook Express) will infect his/her computer if he/she merely OPENS (reads) or PREVIEWS the email. The email has no attachment to click to activate it; it is activated by opening it, by the hidden HTML code in the email. Again, the virus makes use of the ms01-027 exploit, which means that the virus can execute on READING or PREVIEWING the email from within OutLook - it is not necessary to double click on any attachment, since the email contains no TEXT or ATTACHMENT. The virus is EMBEDDED in the body, but formatted NOT to appear, thus you get a completely blank message if you WERE to open it, which would mean you are already infected when you open the email, IF you haven't done all the following: 1) Installed an Anti-Virus (AV) program; 2) Kept it updated with the latest data files; 3) Have your AV program configured properly to detect email viruses; 4) Downloaded and installed the MS patches for MSIE 5.01 and 5.5. The patch to fix this exploit has been available from Microsoft since May 16, 2001 !!!!!!!!!! Where to read the Microsoft Bulletin MS01-027, dated May 16, 2001, and links for downloading the patch for MSIE 5.01 and 5.5: <http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security /bulletin/MS01-027.asp> Where to read about the W32/BadTrans.b@MM Virus: <http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/badtrans/default.asp?cid=2607> <http://www.messagelabs.com/viruseye/report.asp?id=86> Evidently, MSIE 6.0 is not affected, since all the patches for 5.01 and 5.5 were incorporated into it. But, to be sure, make sure you go to the Windows Update page and check to see which patches your system needs. <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> I have seen emails on some of the Lists to which I subscribe, where obstinate users absolutely refuse to install an Anti-Virus (AV) program. They claim they are intelligent and experienced enough to never become infected. NOT SO !!!!! This latest atrocity is being spread by some of these "superior" users. What users without AV programs don't under- stand is that they are doing all the rest of us hundreds of million users a great disservice. I'm tired of downloading dozens of messages every day containing this virus (and others). Someone else will have to provide the information for Norton and other AV programs, but here is what I know about McAfee: You must have version 4.x or later installed; You must be using the 4.0.70 or later engine; You must be using the 4172 or later data file; You must correctly configure McAfee to catch viruses in emails and downloaded files. Furthermore, IF you are using Outlook (not Outlook Express): You MUST not open suspicious emails, or preview them; You must look at the From: header; if it has an address similar to this, <_someone@somewhere.com>, DON'T open it; all the addresses of the infected persons will be real, except they will have the _ (underscore) in from of them. If you open or preview an infected message in Outlook, it's too late! You're already infected! One further thing. If you DO use an AV program, it is imperative that you check for updates often -- at least daily, and, with these souped-up virus versions starting to come out, 2-3 times a day wouldn't hurt. I was lucky. I used the Norton utility to check for updates and downloaded the latest data file just hours before I started receiving the first bunch of infected emails. Many were not so lucky. Addition for Eudora users: Set up a filter that looks for <_ in any header; set it to transfer all such emails to a special folder (such as Infected-Email); make sure you also select "Skip Rest" in the second Action box; then move this filter to the very top of your filters. This will hopefully be the last posting on this subject from me. Please see my HOAX-VIRUS Links page for helpful information regarding viruses, etc. The URL is long so please go to the Mail Lists Jump page for the link: <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lists.html">Lists Jump page - Rootsweb Mail Lists</A> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lists.html Take care ~ Kathie Harrison Lancaster County Coordinator, NEGenWeb http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lancindex.html Harrison Roots & Branches http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/index.html Listowner of: Rootsweb mail lists : NELANCAS-L, NEDIXON-L, NESAUNDE-L, BRICE-L, BLUNT-L, WEITZEL-L & MEDICAL-GENEALOGY-L
Dear List Members: Please DO *NOT* REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE in any way that will cause the reply to go to the list. We want to stick to genealogy as much as possible on the list, not get sidetracked. For further information, contact me PRIVATELY. Better yet, check your online antivirus resources. Please DO *NOT* REPORT VIRUS ACTIVITY to the list under any circumstances. Contact me personally. I will deal with the situation as circumstances warrant. There is a new strain of a virus (actually a worm, for the technically minded) that can *APPEAR* to be closely connected to a mailing list. It is called BadTrans.B and I have received many copies of it over the past few days. Here is how to recognize it: 1. The "from" address begins with an underscore or space, e.g. "_address@domain.net" or " address@domain.net" but is otherwise an address you might recognize as genuine. 2. The "subject" is taken from a message you sent to either an individual or a mailing list. 3. There is no *visible* content or attachment. Here is what to do: 1. Make sure you have updated your antivirus *software* since November 25, 2001.** 2. Make sure you have updated your antivirus *definitions* since November 25, 2001.** 3. Make sure you are running your antivirus software at all times. This used to be optional, a matter of personal preference. It is no longer either, for responsible netizens. 4. Do *NOT* send a warning to the list. If you believe it might be helpful, send me a message *privately*. **Note: if you have an automatic update function in your antivirus program, it will take care of all this for you. No virus is currently capable of passing through a RootsWeb list. However, BadTrans.B makes it *APPEAR* that this is happening, and uses list messages as a source for new targets. Therefore, as list admin I need to act in certain situations. Here is what I will do if a subscriber to one of my lists appears to be infected: 1. I will unsubscribe the address and block resubscription. 2. I will contact the infected subscriber to explain what has been done and to offer assistance. 3. On reasonable assurance from the subscriber that the bug has been cleaned from the subscriber's PC, I will allow resubscription. Remember, infected subscribers are victims, not evil people. However, with reasonable precautions taken we can all help to limit the spread of such bugs. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. A letter has been passed around in my family for years, nobody ever knowing how my grandfather knew Rev. John Vollstedt. The letter, written by the Rev., dated 1929 refered to a Mrs. Herman Stotz and that she had written John Vollstedt and was asking if my grandfather, Ernest Witt, was alive or dead because she had not heard from him in a long time. How did the Rev. get Ernest Witt's address ?, Ernest Witt b. in 1883 in Mecklenburg, Germany immigrated in 1910, first to Wisconsin then he settled in Elgin, IL. to live his life out there. He had never been near Oklahoma, nor did the church sponser him, nor did my grandfather have any deep connections with the Lutheran church in either place.
