POLICE PHONE OPERATOR QUITS WITHOUT NOTICE W.J. Turner, recently demoted from detective and acting desk sergeant at the South Side police station to patrolman and switchboard operator at central station, has resigned. He appeared at the station shortly before the time he was scheduled to go to work last night and turned in his badge and credentials to Captain Peter Dillon. Turner ascribed no reason for quitting and had not given previous notice, according to Captain Dillon. Turner was injured in the court house riot a year and a half ago, a bullet piercing his left leg, making him a cripple for life.
