Mahlon "Lonestar" Hans wrote a book titled "The Great Sioux Nation". His daughter, Montana Helena (Hans) Weyer, wrote a novel titled "Trailing the Teepees". Fred's granddaughter, Grace Lakota (Hans) Pawol had published by the So. Dakota Historical Society, a booklet titled "Scouting for the U. S. Army, 1876-1879: The Diary of Fred M. Hans". Many newspaper articles have also been published about Fred Hans and his career and i have a few but i don't have any way to find others. The books and articles that have been written by Fred Hans or about him, mention many names, places, and historical events. I am wanting to find verification (if possible) of his exploits or correlation in other books or articles. Some of Fred's accomplishments may also be mentioned in some kind of historical documents other than newspapers. Fred Hans career was in detective work for the railroads chasing bank and train robbers which included the "Wild Bunch" (Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid). Fred's! first job was at age 16 scouting for the Army during the so-called Indian Wars on the western plains and during the gold rush days of the 1870s in the Black Hills of the Dakotas. Fred Hans was also a Deputy, US Marshall. Fred's longest and most controversial career was as a chief of detectives for various railroads primarily in Omaha. Most of Fred's accomplishments took place while on horseback and happened in very remote and desolate areas in the territories of Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, the Dakotas, and Nebraska. Newspaper articles are likely to be found in any town of the time with a newspaper in those states, such as: Rapid City, SD; Denver; Laramie; Omaha; Sioux City, Iowa, etc.. One article was found published in the NY Times in Nov of 1900. The books and articles published about Fred Hans report his involvement or refer to events such as his personal participation in treaties with Indian chiefs, battles with Indians such as "Wounded Knee" and Custer's last stand, k! illing or arrest of particular bandits, locating and rescuing captured white women, etc., etc. any assistance in obtaining copies of newspaper articles referencing Fred "Lonestar" Hans, or in locating sources or locations, would be sincerely appreciated please contact Dan Brown directly at dadbrown_99@yahoo.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
