Greater Omaha Genealogy Society's fall workshop is coming soon, (Oct 20) and flyers should hit the mails this weekend. (I know, we're behind schedule, but we've been playing phone tag with some of the speakers.) It will again be at Nebraska Methodist College, here in Omaha (nice location). This is a multi speaker conference, and features area talent, so the cost is lower than when we bring a nationally know speaker in. 1. Organizing your records: will deal with developing a filing system that enables you to find things fairly easily, and neater than the "pilot system" (you know, pile it here, pile it there.) You will want to bring a few of your records, and some file folders, although we will have some extra file folders there for sale. (Don't bring your entire collection of genealogy materials, there won't be THAT much time. Just a few to get started.) 2. Finding Our Civil War Ancestors by Dave Wells, G.A.R./Civil War expert. We'l look at the GAR & Civil War records and learn how to find out more about our ancestors who were involved in the War Between the States. Lunch will be 11:45 to 1:00 PM, and you can go out, bring your own, OR we are planning on having lunch available at a nominal fee (sloppy joes and salad or potato chips) if you want to stay there and work on your file organization. 3. Dave Harding, Omaha World Herald columnist will discuss writing the stories of our ancestors. 4. Todd Arrington from the Homestead National Monument will be there to discuss the procedures for getting a homestead, and the process we have go through 100 or so years later to find the records. There are door prizes, a bake sale, and generally, we have a lot of fun! Hope you can join us. If we make any money over actual expenses, we buy more genealogy materials that get placed at the W. Dale Clark Library in Omaha, so it's a win-win situation. Email me quick if you want a flyer with times, speakers, costs and address. We're hoping to get the flyers in the mail Saturday. G.O.G.S. members get a price discount, plus they get the newsletter 10 times a year, an Ezine, and other perks. And yes, people can join with the conference attendance to get the lower rate if they want to. There will also be fliers at area libraries and family history centers. We've had a lot of fun at past workshops and hope you'll join us for this one too.
