    1. Re: [NEDOUGLA] Omaha Poor Farm
    2. Forest Lawn actually sold one unused section of their recently developed property to Douglas County, who then named it Potters Field. The county had full control and responsibility for the upkeep and care of the new cemetery. The only input from Forest Lawn, was a separate contract providing for digging and refilling the graves at $1.25 each Prior to this agreement the "Poor Farm" buried their dead right on their property, which is close to the County Hospital near 42nd and Center St. The number of burials or location of graves has never been disclosed. The county also was in control of all records names, date, and other details. This arrangement was in the late 1880, and was discontinued in the late 1930's or early 1940's. Forest Lawn has probably the best records of any cemetery in that time period, but for the most part, concentrated on their Cemetery, not Potters Field, or Prospect Hill. 2. Lisa Alzo will be coming to Omaha to speak at a conference sponsored by the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society the last Saturday in April. Lisa's topics will be: Demystifying Eastern Eastern European Research; Silent Voices: Telling the Stories of your female immigrant ancestors, Making Census of your family history and one other which will be decided in the next week. If you are not on the conference mailing list that G.O.G.S. uses (haven't gotten the flyers in the past 2 years), but would be interested in obtaining a flyer, please email me off list with your mailing address so that we can mail a flyer to you. Flyers will also be at Omaha branch libraries and family history centers...but if you live outside the Omaha area that usually stops at these sites, you might be interested in coming into town for this one. Feel free to share this with others that you think might be interested in this conference, and may not be on this list. Karen
