Also, be aware that while the Pioneer cemetery in the Florence area across the street from the Trail Center is probably the largest of the pioneer cemeteries, it is only one of them. There's a lot of research currently to try to locate & identify the pioneer cemeteries. There were several on the Nebraska side of the river, and several more on the Iowa side, in as much as there were some 90 communities in the area started by the pioneers using the area as a staging area for the trek west. Many of the communities they established still exist, although many have changed their names. Karen
Re Mormon Pioneer Cemetery: Suggest checking the Mormon FamilySearch site Then look for Locality Catalogue for film and number. Films may be borrowed for a fee and viewed at your nearest Mormon Family History Centre. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <NEDOUGLA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 07, 2007 11:42 AM Subject: [NEDOUGLA] Mormon Pioneer Cemetery > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: WEST > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.nebraska.counties.douglas/4713/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Does anyone know if a list exists of those (approx 359) Mormon souls > buried in the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery? I am looking for the burial of Alfred Wetherhold Adams who was born 24 December 1842 died 2 December 1924. He had two wives A. Matilda Gobell and Ellen F. Topliff. Matilda had two sons, George b. abt. 1861 and Nelson b. 1864. Ellen had four sons, Everett, Ernest, Harold, and Henry. I am hoping to find the cemetery where Alfred is buried and eventually try to get an obituary. I assume that most of the Omaha cemeteries have been inventoried. Thanks. Kay Winter

There is the office that Nancy provided in her reply to you but that office does not have the complete list. I was told the city of Florence was in charge of the complete record but when I went there I was told city of Omaha had the list it was turned over when they annexed. When I went to the City of Omaha I was told they didn't have them the city of Florence retained those records, and so on and so on. I did find some information at the main library when I was in town. Try the office Nancy provided and I hope you have better luck than I did. Johanna Ohio

She might want to check with the LDS Church. I know that they are currently scanning and indexing all of the 3 million or so microfilmed records in their vaults getting ready to put all of them on line with indexing & intersection to other records where the same names/combination of names occur. They're looking for volunteers to help. Projected date to finish the scanning is in the next 6-7 years, with indexing & interfacing to be finished as fast as humans can get it done and get it on-line. The Society right now is working on cemetery records and obit indexing. We also have some work going on for a book to immediately succeed the previous marriage book that we did. How many years it will cover will depend on the number of pages it grows into, as we want it reasonably affordable for people. Karen

Marriage License index transcription project. This week a woman who lives in Michigan, but has roots in Omaha, sent me 184 marriage license index items from the early 1900s transcribed from microfilm. These were a partial list of the "A" surnames in the Index and can be seen at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nedougla/html/marriages She would like to identify and work with others who are interested in the Douglas Co. Marriage License Index, so as to transcribe more of the entries. If anyone on this list, who lives in Omaha, is interested please contact me. To: GOGS leadership If this Marriage License project raises any red flags for the Society, please let me know. Emmett Mason http://www.rootsweb.com/~nedougla/
Unfortunately, no one seems to be able to find the records of the cemetery that we keep running into evidence of at/near the Douglas County hospital site. There is definitely no cemetery there, and when you ask people at the hospital, or county offices, you get a lot of blank stares. It's an issue that the members of the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society has been pursuing leads on for the last year or two. So far, all the leads have run into brick walls. No one seems to know, or they're not talking. Karen
We have the records for the Potters Field and are in the process of retyping it for possible publication. Let us know if you have people you want us to look up. There is a cemetery off to the E side of Forest Lawn that is where Potter's Field is. There is a large monument to the adults, but only a few scattered stones that have been put in by relatives, after years the fact. (Obviously, people who could afford to put a stone on the grave at the time of the death could afford to purchase a grave and wouldn't have been buried there.) Karen

That place is beautiful, and has tons of hugh monuments, rolling hills, and tons of trees. The old name really surprises me.
