1. Re: [NEDOUGLA] NARA trying to hike 338 percent on Civil War pensionrecords & ...
2. I would write to the National Archives in Washington DC, and it might not hurt to write or email your Representatives & Senators. When I think that the records from the War of 1812 have not been microfilmed or digitized, I cringe. Can you imagine how fragile that paper must be by now. What neglect! I know that one of the national genealogy societies has been trying to raise funds to get both the US Colored Troops from the Civil War and the War of 1812 actual records filmed for preservation. Washington needs to get on the stick. Some things are higher priority than some of the other things that they give money out hand over fist. Any leads on the name of the newspaper, the store itself or if anyone has access to a City Directory who could possibly see if he was listed between those years and possibly even 1957 and 1961 I would be so grateful. 2. ewintr
3. Hello, I haven't been on this list very long so I hope it is permissable to request a census lookup. I am searching for William (Bill, maybe Billy) JOHNSON in 1930. His wife's name is Elva. They had a son (Dean) born in Omaha in 1933 so I assume they were there in 1930 although she was born in Illinois and he 'may' have been born in Arkansas. Any help is appreciated! 3. Hi folks I'm new to this list. I'm getting a long way from home now in my searching and I know nothing about Nebraska and it's history so I'm out of my realm here. I'm looking for my g-g-aunt's family. She was Martha MIDDLETON who married Thomans C. WALLACE (WALLAS) The family below moved to Omaha in the late 1800's. 1. [NEDOUGLA] German American Fraktur as Genealogy Records
2. German American Family Records in the Fraktur Tradition (3 volumes) by Earnest, Corinne P. A fraktur is a highly decorative piece of art work that will give you birth or occasionally marriage information about an individual. They are now very expensive and occasionally turn up in antique shops If you have Pennsylvania German ancestry, take some time to look at these books for possible ancestor information or for an appreciation of an art style common among many of our ancestors. This three volume set is another of the genealogical treasures found in the third floor book room at the W. Dale Clark Library in Omaha. Sorry, books in the Genealogy Book Room Collection do not circulate.

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. 1. [NEDOUGLA] Looking for historic baptismal custom information
2. I'm putting together a quiz for our Genealogy Society members so that they can be aware of things they know/don't know about researching. One of the questions is which Churches do infant baptism (because their records of infant baptism are closer to a birth date, and which Churches only do late childhood/adult baptisms. I know a few, but have spent the last hour and a half searching the net and haven't hit the right combination to bring up the exact answers I am looking for. I don't want a debate about whether one is right or wrong, but a simple statement that Church A does infant baptisms, Church B only baptizes adults, Church C baptizes when people who are of an age to ask for it...kind of a thing. If you have information for me, you can contact me off list (Some might argue this isn't "genealogy", though I think knowing whether our ancestor belonged to a Church that did infant or adult baptism will make a difference on whether we can substitute a baptismal date for a birth date or not.) If you're interested in this kind of quiz for your local genealogy society, contact me in a couple days, and I'll send you a copy of the final quiz. This one is specific to OUR genealogy society, but could be adapted without much difficulty to other genealogy societies. It's just kind of something to get folks thinking. 1. [NEDOUGLA] Vital Records and Substitutes for Vital Records
2. Saturday morning, Feb 17, 9AM at the Mormon Trail Center multi purpose area on North State Street (top of the hill west from 30th in Florence) will be the second of this year's family history classes. The topic is Vital Records for the Vital Events of our Lives and Substitutes for Vital Records. These classes are sponsored by the Omaha Public Library and the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society. We're grateful to the folks at the Trail Center for letting us use their room because the largest class room in the library only holds fifty people. If you signed up last month, you are automatically signed up for this one, so if you find you can't come, please let us know so that we won't prepare the extra handouts for people that aren't coming. If you weren't able to make it last month, and want to come this month, please call us at 706-1453 or email: _Genclass@aol.com_ (mailto:Genclass@aol.com) to let us know that you are coming, or to ask any questions. The classes are free, but we want to have an idea how many are coming so we can get enough handouts made without having dozens left over. We will again have our offer available for new members, so that they can sign up for the Genealogy Society the rest of the fiscal year for half price. There should be time at the end of class for questions. We are working towards having a class at the library on entering data into Personal Ancestral File, which is a free genealogy program for those that don't have a genealogy program of their own yet...also one of the best ones. It is loaded on the two computers in the genealogy room, but you will need a small disk or a thumb drive to input your data and be able to take it home. We'll see you Saturday morning. (It's still too cold to do much else, so come be warm with us...and maybe you'll be like some others and find a new cousin at the class.) Karen
