Jane...At Prospect Hill Cemetery, Elkorn, Douglas Co., NE: Rachel A. Doherty 1861-1940 Brother Emma R. Chandler Jan. 10, 1867 Nov. 17, 1945 Rufus E. Chandler June 10, 1863 April 28, 1934 Frank J. Watters Aug. 15, 1877 March 5, 1895 Mary Doherty Murphy (remarried after Charles' death?) Sept. 23, 1870 Sept. 25, 1960 Charles Doherty March 24, 1855 July 21, 1933 Mabel Doherty Riggs April 29, 1891 July 9, 1992 Grace Marie Doherty daughter of Charles and Mary Oct. 7, 1896 Aug. 13, 1897 Bethel Doherty June 7, 1898 Oct. 15, 1935 Given the proximity and layout of the graves, it would appear that Joshua and Levinah are the parents of Balford, Charles and E.A.--as well as a daughter (not identified here) who married a Watters. There's a newspaper reference on the USGENWEB site for Douglas Co. with an obit for Frank Watters...who died at the farm of his uncle--E.A. Doherty, 3 miles west of Waterloo. Cora, Balford A., and Eva Kahler are likely children of Balford and Rachel. H. Balford Barber would be a child of Sarah Doherty Barber. Not sure about Genevieve...could she also be a daughter of perhaps Ruth or Bertha who married a Weeks? The Lizzie Weeks on the 1910 census could be a sister to this Genevieve. Daughter Emma could be Emma R. Chandler. Mabel, Bethel and Grace Marie are likely children of Charles and Mary. This gives you married names for Emma, Eva, and Sarah--and possibly Ruth or Bertha. I snapped some photos of the larger stones with my phone. Contact me directly if you want these and I'll e-mail. Jane...Here's some information: In 1910, Ballard Doherty, age 66, is living with Rachel, 61, and Lizzie Weeks, 19, in Chicago Precinct, Elkhorn P.O. (That's actually about where I live now; it's all developed and isn't farming anymore). (T624_845, Page 14B, ED 96, Image 131.) In 1920, Dalford Doherty, age 76, is living with Rachel, 71, at Waterloo; that's just west of Elkhorn. (T625_990, Page 7A, ED 144, Image 834). In 1930, Balford Doherty, age 80, is living with Charles H. Barber and Sarah O. Barber. He's "father-in-law"--so this Sarah must be his daughter. This is at Summit, Burt Co., NE, just two counties north of Douglas Co. (1266, Page 10A, ED 15, Image 419.0). Looks then like Rachel died between 1920 and 1930 and Balford went to live with his daughter. I'm not aware of a cemetery in Waterloo; although there could be one. Perhaps someone else on the list would know this. My next recommendation would be the Old Elkhorn Cemetery. Next time I'm out that way, I'll take a look for these folks. I don't know if the records are available; I just drive through when I want to find someone; it's fairly small. I am lookinga for information about the Balford and Rachel Doherty family. They were listed in the Waterloo Precinct starting in the 1900 Census. They had 5 girls: Emma, Eva, Bertha, Ruth, and Sarah. I cannot find out anything about the girls or when and where Balford and Rachel died and are buried. I would appreciate any help. Thank, Jane
