    1. [NEDOUGLA] Just a reminder
    2. Monday is the last day to register for next Saturday's Genealogy Workshop (Oct 20) in Omaha to be held at Nebraska Methodist college. It's too late to mail a flyer out to anybody that's still interested, BUT you can download one at _www.gogsmembers.wordpress.com_ (http://www.gogsmembers.wordpress.com) There's also some information on other GOGS activities and plans, plus a link to 92,000 indexed obits from Omaha newspapers [www.Omahaobits.wordpress.com] (updated weekly, usually sometime on Saturday--not always on Saturday morning--and especially not on Saturday morning next week with the conference going on). Topids: Organizaing records (so that you can find those copies & documents you've spent the money on) Civil War Soldier research Writing the stories of our families Using Homestead Records (it's amazing how much family information is in some of them.) If you don't pre-register, you can still come, but it costs more to register at the door. Members of Greater Omaha Genealogy Society get a member discount either through the mail or at the door (plus a newsletter, ezine and other perks). Some join the Society JUST for the membership discount because the discounts on the two annual conferences saves them the cost of membership, making the rest free. The Nebraska Methodist College location is just off 90th & Dodge, lovely building with lots of free parking. The rooms are large, there are two camera sites that can flash the overheads so everybody can see them. Lunch facilities are near by, or we'll also have available a sloppy joe & salad or chips at lunch time for nominal fee, since there may be those who don't want to go out. We always have a bake sale, and there's a goodie bag for all registrants (even a free genealogy magazine for everybody in it.) Hope to see you all there. If you have more questions that the web site didn't answer, you can call: 706-1453 ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    1. [NEDOUGLA] Fred "Lonestar" Hans--books & newspaper articles
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: db1297627 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.nebraska.counties.douglas/4798/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Fred. Mahlon "Lonestar" Hans wrote a book titled "The Great Sioux Nation". His daughter, Montana Helena (Hans) Weyer, wrote a novel titled "Trailing the Teepees". Fred's granddaughter, Grace Lakota (Hans) Pawol had published by the So. Dakota Historical Society, a booklet titled "Scouting for the U. S. Army, 1876-1879: The Diary of Fred M. Hans". Many newspaper articles have also been published about Fred Hans and his career and i have a few but i don't have any way to find others. The books and articles that have been written by Fred Hans or about him, mention many names, places, and historical events. I am wanting to find verification (if possible) of his exploits or correlation in other books or articles. Some of Fred's accomplishments may also be mentioned in some kind of historical documents other than newspapers. Fred Hans career was in detective work for the railroads chasing bank and train robbers which included the "Wild Bunch" (Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid). Fred's! first job was at age 16 scouting for the Army during the so-called Indian Wars on the western plains and during the gold rush days of the 1870s in the Black Hills of the Dakotas. Fred Hans was also a Deputy, US Marshall. Fred's longest and most controversial career was as a chief of detectives for various railroads primarily in Omaha. Most of Fred's accomplishments took place while on horseback and happened in very remote and desolate areas in the territories of Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, the Dakotas, and Nebraska. Newspaper articles are likely to be found in any town of the time with a newspaper in those states, such as: Rapid City, SD; Denver; Laramie; Omaha; Sioux City, Iowa, etc.. One article was found published in the NY Times in Nov of 1900. The books and articles published about Fred Hans report his involvement or refer to events such as his personal participation in treaties with Indian chiefs, battles with Indians such as "Wounded Knee" and Custer's last stand, k! illing or arrest of particular bandits, locating and rescuing captured white women, etc., etc. any assistance in obtaining copies of newspaper articles referencing Fred "Lonestar" Hans, or in locating sources or locations, would be sincerely appreciated please contact Dan Brown directly at dadbrown_99@yahoo.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NEDOUGLA] 60,000 + names Up and running--but not perfect yet!
    2. We've got 60,000+ names extracted from Omaha newspapers, and when the Library recently decided they weren't going to be able to get it up any time soon, we went looking. Wordpress suits the needs very well for now. This is definitely a work in progress. Not only will more names be added as they're extracted from newspaper microfilms, but the current content will be fine tuned (we have some that are duplicates from consecutive days, etc...and they will be removed. Different papers for the same individual will not be taken out.) If you come to the W. Dale Clark library in Omaha, this material is in notebooks in the genealogy book room by individual years. Because of the number of pages (nearly 1000 when combined), they will not be combined into a single data base because of printing costs to add more names to a given year when there are lots of pages. If you are coming to Omaha, do a cut & paste for the names that you're interested in if you don't want to check when you get here, because once a data base is over 10 pages, I don't bring a reprint down until I've added another 10 pages (if what we've collected is more than the 10 page parameter, we do add 11 or more pages at the same time with the current update, so the # of pages may be odd numbers more than 10.) New names are added to a holding file until we can get them into the individual year printouts or on-line. It would be difficult to say which is the more current public copy at any given time. To use this site efficiently, here are some things to know: 1. Years are combined. Know when your person died approximately. Many names are very common and the only way to tell them apart if you don't know much about them is the death date or cemetery (though sometimes families did NOT stick to one particular cemetery.) Spouse (& parent names for under 21 & single) are included usually, if given in the obit. (Although not always in the earliest ones that we extracted, sorry.) 2 * means more than one day's paper. *** means 3 more days in that edition of the paper...such as a total of four days in the morning paper. The first appearance of an item may not be the most complete...but information is combined in our index for the edition that it appears in. Sometimes, there are news stories with more information each day. There may be a day or two skipped before the obit is repeated in some cases. And page #'s aren't given for additional days. 3. Although we're generally calling it an "obit" index, PLEASE understand that we're taking anything that indicates somebody died and putting it in, because, especially in the early days, it was not common to put much of anything in the paper unless a person was prominent in the community, or if it made a "really good news story". It's as if the three or four lines were used as "filler" to take up space. That's why you will get Lodge notices (LN), death certificate notices (DC), Cards of thanks (COT), even items that appear in the gossip column that indicates something like: Mr. & Mrs. John Jones were in Omaha for the funeral of their nephew, Harry Bronson. And sometimes, the death certificate notice may give a more complete name than does the obit. 4. Other than people who died in the immediate Omaha area and may have been taken anywhere for burial, we're also extracting names for people that the papers report dying anywhere within about an hour to an hour & a half's drive of Omaha...on either side of the river. Just because you think you're folks are strictly Iowa, doesn't mean they didn't show up in an Omaha paper, even in the early days. Here's the web address and happy hunting. _http://omahaobits.wordpress.com/_ (http://omahaobits.wordpress.com/) Karen ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    1. Re: [NEDOUGLA] Genealogy workshop Oct 20 in Omaha...
    2. Karen, Just a follow-up to my previous emails. Wondering if you have been able to find out any thing from the Old Lutheran Home about Patricia? I have tried to contact you several times to follow-up and I have not received any response from you. If you are not interested in helping me, I understand, but would appreciate a response at least so I know to look at other options. There have been some recent developments in my search so the more I move ahead, the better my chances are right now. I look forward to your response. Thank you, Michelle -----Original Message----- From: Sahara346@aol.com To: nedougla@rootsweb.com; nedodge@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, 5 Sep 2007 5:57 pm Subject: [NEDOUGLA] Genealogy workshop Oct 20 in Omaha... Greater Omaha Genealogy Society's fall workshop is coming soon, (Oct 20) and flyers should hit the mails this weekend. (I know, we're behind schedule, but we've been playing phone tag with some of the speakers.) It will again be at Nebraska Methodist College, here in Omaha (nice location). This is a multi speaker conference, and features area talent, so the cost is lower than when we bring a nationally know speaker in. 1. Organizing your records: will deal with developing a filing system that enables you to find things fairly easily, and neater than the "pilot system" (you know, pile it here, pile it there.) You will want to bring a few of your records, and some file folders, although we will have some extra file folders there for sale. (Don't bring your entire collection of genealogy materials, there won't be THAT much time. Just a few to get started.) 2. Finding Our Civil War Ancestors by Dave Wells, G.A.R./Civil War expert. We'l look at the GAR & Civil War records and learn how to find out more about our ancestors who were involved in the War Between the States. Lunch will be 11:45 to 1:00 PM, and you can go out, bring your own, OR we are planning on having lunch available at a nominal fee (sloppy joes and salad or potato chips) if you want to stay there and work on your file organization. 3. Dave Harding, Omaha World Herald columnist will discuss writing the stories of our ancestors. 4. Todd Arrington from the Homestead National Monument will be there to discuss the procedures for getting a homestead, and the process we have go through 100 or so years later to find the records. There are door prizes, a bake sale, and generally, we have a lot of fun! Hope you can join us. If we make any money over actual expenses, we buy more genealogy materials that get placed at the W. Dale Clark Library in Omaha, so it's a win-win situation. Email me quick if you want a flyer with times, speakers, costs and address. We're hoping to get the flyers in the mail Saturday. G.O.G.S. members get a price discount, plus they get the newsletter 10 times a year, an Ezine, and other perks. And yes, people can join with the conference attendance to get the lower rate if they want to. There will also be fliers at area libraries and family history centers. We've had a lot of fun at past workshops and hope you'll join us for this one too. I checked on one of my archived newspaper subscriptions and couldn't find mention of them but that time period is pretty sketchy... Good luck! They were Don or Dan C. H. McNeil and his wife Ella McNeil. Don died in the 1920*s in Omaha, where he was a pharamacist and his wife Ella, died sometime after 1930.
