Next Saturday we're having the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society Spring Workshop, featuring Michae John Neil, nationally known genealogy speaker (& a very good speaker). His topics are: Researching the Entire Family: focusing only on the direct line can cause significant information to be overlooked and larger patterns to go un-noticed. This lecture discusses via examples, the importance of researching the siblings and at least first cousins of a direct ancestor. Beginning German Research: Beginning stages of German family history research. Land Records (Public Land States): Basics of how land is described in public land states and effective search strategies for records in these localities, including a discussion of basic terminology. Intended for the researcher with little or no experience in land records. Researching on a Tight Budget: Discusses some no-cost and low=cost ways to expand your genealogical research. Mention is also made of those times when "free" or "low-cost" is not possible. There will be a syllabus, door prizes, a bake sale, white elephant sale, a freebie table, and lunch is available at a nominal fee. Any money made over expenses is used to buy more materials for the genealogy department at the W. Dale Clark library, and we'll all find more ancestors! (We have copies of two genealogy magazines in the sign in bags.) APRIL 5, doors open at 8:15, starts at 9:00 AM. Nebraska Methodist College, 87th & Burt (use the east door, lots of free parking) in Omaha. 3rd floor, but there are elevators, lots of rest rooms...very nice facility. Members of the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society DO get a discount on the conference, and since a new membership will run through Jun of 2009, members joining for this conference actually can get in three conferences at the membership price for the price a year's membership. (Somebody said that's like US giving YOU $10 because there are three conferences in that amount of time.) You can download a flyer for the conference at _www.gogsmembers.wordpress.com_ (http://www.gogsmembers.wordpress.com) (look on the lower right hand side of the front page.) It's in PDF format, and PDF viewers I'm told can be downloaded for free if you don't have one. Email _Genclass@aol.com_ (mailto:Genclass@aol.com) to be aware that your registration is in the mail--but it must be mailed sometime this weekend so that we get it in time to process it. Plans are already in the works for the fall workshop, which won't be as expensive because we don't bring in a national speaker...so stay tuned. Date is currently set at Oct 11. See you there. I know we're going to have fun. Karen **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. The seven county genealogy sites which I maintain in NEGenWeb are remaining on the Rootsweb host server. At the moment both addresses to my counties (rootsweb.com/~..... or rootsweb.ancestry.com/~.....) will work. Those counties are Butler, Douglas, Greeley, Nemaha, Otoe, Perkins and Sheridan. USGenWeb has moved, but is probably undergoing maintenance today and may not work. Try it again in a couple of days. www.usgenweb.org/ NEGenWeb has moved, but links to all counties have not been changed to reflect those counties which moved and those like me who stayed with Rootsweb. They should be fixed in a few days. http://negenweb.org/ probably www.negenweb.org would also work Just sharing this information, Emmett Mason

I particularly want to know where Samuel was in 1930 (living with a family member in Omaha, living alone, etc). He was born 20 Mar 1880 and died 26 May 1934 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was my husband's Grandfather. His wife was Bertha Alma Nichols (who died in 1926). Their children were Winfield Dearborn Purchase, b. 1912; (Samuel) "James" Purchase, b. 1915; Ruth Ellen Purchase, b. 1918, married to Adams and Tatreau; and Bertha ("Betty") Purchase, b. 1919. Samuel worked at The Union Tea Company in Omaha. He used to be like a Watkins man, selling products, going door to door -- only in his time he went from farm to farm in a buckboard. Another new addition to the site is a listing of Omaha area newspapers that are at the Omaha Public Library, and the years that they were published (some were only published for a few months.) This contains some of the same information that the pink newspaper lists available at the W. Dale Clark library contain about their newspaper holdings, and the years of publication. This makes a useful adjunct to that listing, and by no means replaces it. That handout gives the dates of publication that we have at the library, but this sheet is a "quicky" reference so that we can see at a glance what papers were in publication in the approximate time periods we are interested in. You can then check the pink sheets for the exact publication dates for those particular papers. FYI, there are three newspapers now that are fully indexed for references to someone's death (since they aren't always true "obits", being death certificate notices, probate notices, gossip column notices, etc.) You'll want a color printer for it if you have one. Alas, this week one went up that was for "Pete Glandt's married daughter" in 1884. If he only had one daughter who was married, you're in business. If he had several that were married, at least you know to look for the death of one of them at that time period...she won't be in the 1885 census, and this is why. If you try to contact me, cross your fingers. My AOL emails have been acting very quirky, and I can't get into it half the time. Karen **************Ideas to please picky eaters.
