    1. [NEDOUGLA] Wednesday evening Genealogy meeting.
    2. We have guests coming to speak to the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society Wednesday night at 7:00 PM at Crown Point Retirement Center. The topic will be adoptions. Many families want to know about their birth family as well as their adoptive family (especially since there are so many medical conditions that are inheritable. We have had guest speakers from the Adoption Triad before (although it has been several years), and it is always interesting to hear the process of people connecting with birth families. You do not need to be a member of G.O.G.S. to attend the meeting. Karen

    1. [NEDOUGLA] Another genealogical treasure at the W. Dale Clark Library in Omaha
    2. Have you ever used John Andriot's Township Atlas of the United States? Located in the genealogy book room (929.10973An 28t, 1987), this book is a treasure for researching your ancestors in the census and figuring out where to look next. It is broken down first into states, then individual counties picturing the townships of the United States. When you know the township in one census, it may be quicker to find them in the next one, unless they moved. (This is assuming you are using the film, or even if you can't find them because the indexer couldn't read somebody's handwriting in the on line versions.) Use the atlas to determine just where in the county your family lived in relationship to the county boundaries (maybe they got the marriage license in the next county over, instead of their own county seat if it were closer...or maybe if their township was on the border of two states, you need to check counties in the neighboring state for the bride/groom and marriage of that elusive ancestor.) What if there are two or three people about the same age with the same name in the census, and you're not sure which one your ancestor married? Look to see what townships they were in. In the old days when we had to travel by horseback or wagon, people married closer to home than they often do now when they can drive across the county in half an hour or less. When there are very common surnames that your are looking for, utilizing the Township Atlas to narrow the search field may prove to be a tremendous help. Xerox the maps of your counties and keep them handy while you research. This book is in the Genealogy Reference room at the W. Dale Clark Library. If you can't get down there yourself, you can contact Greater Omaha Genealogical Society, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness volunteers, or the Omaha Public Library to try to get copies of your family's counties of residence. 1. [NEDOUGLA] Saturday at Prospect Hill Cemetery
    2. This Saturday morning we will again be meeting at historic Prospect Hill Cemetery in Omaha to work on reading the stones so that we have a record of them before they are totally destroyed by weather and vandals. Two weeks ago those who were there made good progress, but there is still much to be done. We meet up near the flag pole at 9:30 in the morning and have been working the two sections to the south of the flag pole. We have notebooks, but you will want to bring a pen or pencil to write with, maybe a hat & sunscreen. Bug repellent is a must because the chiggers are hungry!! We have some cemetery kits for unearthing slightly buried stones, and some other tools that we regularly use, but if you have them, you might want to bring them: grass clippers trowel white chalk lg soft brush like a paint brush spray bottle for water It is very interesting to see the various markers and know that many of the people whose stones we are transcribing are the people whose names we see on streets and schools here in Omaha. Some markers are in German and we found one in Welsh. We don't worry about translating, just transcribing. Teenagers and adults are welcome. Questions? 346-6256 or 714-6256. Hope to see you there. We will also be there the last Saturday in September, but the October schedule will probably change due to other commitments on second & fourth Saturdays. Stay tuned. Come help if you can. Karen
