Do you know Chris's father's name? My adoptive father is a Sorenson. I have been transcribing Prospect Hill Cemetery in Omaha and there are several Sorenson's there. I have to go to work but will get the info and pass it along to you later. October is Family History Month Join Greater Omaha Genealogical Society members in doing things to help more people access more information about people from our area. “Cast your Bread upon the waters, it will come back buttered.” Skip Ross In other words, do locally what others can't do for themselves, and someone, somewhere, will do something that will help you find YOUR ancestors. Last year we had over 500 volunteer work hours donated to make more records available about people living in our area. We'd like to do at least that much this year. Because not just members of the Greater Omaha Genealogy Society will benefit, we're inviting anyone in our area to help. (If you want to help, but don't live in the area, contact me and we'll see what we can find for you to do to help make more genealogy records available for people.) Projects we have already needing help: 1. Typing (some people can't get out to help, others hate to type--sounds like a perfect match. 2. High school & college year book collection & indexing (these year books will be at the W. Dale Clark Library when indexed) 3. Cemetery reading (these will be published so that people can access information about their ancestors from the markers...and when the cemeteries work with us, we also include the names of those who were interred without markers. One more added plus to our cemetery projects: we include interment dates if the stone has only a year of death OR if the person had no stone. It makes it easier to find an obit, or order a death certificate if the death certificates were kept at that time. IF the Society makes money from publications, more materials are purchased for the W. Dale Clark Library, and we all benefit that way as well.) 4. Marriage indexing 5. Obituary indexing from historic Omaha newspapers on microfilm Other projects that will help make more records available are welcome. We must get a copy of the records generated however, to have it count. To help: call 706-1456 or 346-6256 OR Email: OmahaMom@aol.com
Was your Munro family Catholic or Protestant, or do you know? It will make a difference where we look, if we can narrow the search somewhat. Karen

However your researchers have made a couple of incorrect assumptions using census data. David Kent was born in Albany, Fayette Co., Iowa on Aug. 17, 1858, not Appanoose Co. (He did die in Dow City on Aug. 9, 1900.) This is based on a handwritten genealogy by David's wife, daughter, and granddaughter (my mother). My research of census data also leads me to believe that Silas Kent was not born in Pickaway Co. but in Harrison Co. Ohio, however research is still ongoing by me as this family's census history is very inconsistent on ages making very difficult to track from 1870 back. If questions you can contact me directly @tccroom@pacbell.net.

When he applied for his Social Security card, he would have filled-out an SS-5 form, which asked for his birthplace + name of father + maiden name of mother (which you want to know). The Social Security Administration will sell a copy of that form to anyone for $27.00. It may take a few months to arrive. He married "Hortense" (b. 1849 in ME) and in the 1870 Omaha Ward 5 census it states they had 2 children (LuLu & Harry). By 1880 Omaha Dist. 20 census he was married to "Ida E" (b. 8/1856 in IL). Both 1870 & 1880 H.W. Cremer was a Crockery Merchant. Children in the 1880 census was Leon & Mina. In 1886, Cedric was born in Omaha. I would like to know who H.W. Cremer's parents were if possible. Perhaps there are marriage records that might states who his parents were, plus what Hortense & Ida's maiden names were? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I checked the newspaper today regarding the William Gerner obituary. It is definitely Gerner in the paper, but they make mistakes too. 100 + years later, it would be difficult to tell, although if someone has access to the cemetery records, they may be able to tell us whether the paper made a misprint or not. There is a complete set of Omaha City Directories on the 3rd floor of the W. Dale Clark Library. They are located in the stacks along the wall to the right of the reference desk (if you are standing looking at the reference desk). City directories are useful when you're not sure when to start looking for someone moving in or out of a city, or perhaps dying between censuses, especially when there weren't vital records kept. In the early years, South Omaha is at the end of the Omaha city directories before 1915. Partnered with the descriptions of the areas located in census films, it can help you locate which of six census reels to find your family's neighborhood in if you are looking at the film census. (Yes, we have all of Nebraska censuses that have been released.) It can help narrow the search for tracking an ancestral occupation. You can track your family's employment history between census years, using the city directories. The directories started in 1866 and they have all available to the present time. No City Directories were made in 1867, 1869, 1871, 1873, 1875, 1882, 1919, 1920, 1924, 1927, 1930, 1943, 1944, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1969, 1988 or 1994. If you have Omaha ancestry, you're going to want to look at the City Directories. The library also has a few city directories for other places as well...but the main collection is naturally for Omaha. Karen
