I have a long distance request and would appreciate any help I could get on obtaining the obituaries of my paternal grandparents and pictures of their graves. My paternal grandparents lived and died in Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska, and although my father died in Louisville, Kentucky, he is buried with his parents at Fremont Memorial Cemetery. I live in Louisville, Kentucky, and I have never seen my father's grave nor the graves of my grandparents. I have never even seen a picture of their graves. You have no idea how much it would mean to me to finally see my father's grave. He killed himself in our Louisville home in 1962 when I was 10 years old. My father was Glenn L. Ernst. He was born July 12, 1918, and died August 3, 1962. My grandparents were Ira Ernst (died September 5, 1976), and Nettie (Enyeart) Ernst (died December 6, 1971). There aren't any words to express how much it would mean to me to have the pictures and the obituaries. Can anyone help me? I would be glad to pay for your time and costs. Okay, then. Question One: Ella Gaw (born 15 Mar 1886) died in July 1983. She lived in Omaha. If she is the one I seek, she was married to David John Gaw and had at least one child, Charles, born in 1910. Ella and David are in the Omaha city directory in 1939 and 1940. I would really like to see a typescript of her obituary. I find no death record for her husband, but of course, his obit would be even better. David is the son of Joseph Gaw and Margaret Alice Palmer. Joseph is my gggrandfather David Harper's stepson. Mother was Sarah Wilson Gaw Harper. I just found this branch a few months ago and hope to find information about Joseph's step-siblings: Jennie (Sarah Jane) Harper (b 1859) who married Joseph M. Reynolds and moved to Iowa. Ashton (male, born 1856) and disappears after 1880 census in Nebraska. And David Harper's other children: Robert (my ancestor) Catherine Harper Williamson Anne (b 1848) Ewart (b 1849) And, of course, to see if David Gaw's son Charles might have living descendants!!! > From: Sahara346@aol.com > Date: Sun, 6 Sep 2009 11:43:54 -0400 > To: nedodge@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [NEDODGE] It's a Genealogy Lock In > > You can always ask questions. Nancy, I hit a brick wall in my family tree with Carl Aloysious Eduard Schaefer. He was killed in Omaha, Nebraska on a street car. No death date, No place of last known residence, No burial information. I can send more information if this is something you have time to do. He was born in 1832 and his son immigrated to the United States in 1883. By looking at some of the children's census records, I came to the conclusion that he would have had to have been in Omaha between the years of 1883 and 1900. If you have time, your help would be greatly appreciated! Hello, If you can't come to the Genealogy Lock In and you live far alway. I can do some look up for you. Tell me what you need and I would be happy to help out. Nancy Mancuso
On Friday, October 2nd, Omaha Public Library and the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society are holding their first ever Genealogy Lock In. On that evening, while other library patrons are being shooed out the door, the genealogists that are there will be settling down for some serious research. The doors to enter will be locked before 6:30 PM that night, so be very sure you're not late or you won't be able to enter (you can leave at any time. To be sure that you have a name tag so that you can stay: email _Sahara346@aol.com_ (mailto:Sahara346@aol.com) and give me your full name. Every one else will be headed for the door and out by six PM. The Lock In officially ends at 9:30 PM, so we'll have to leave by then. Reasons to come to the Lock In? 1. 2 librarians on duty who are going to be focusing just on genealogists 2. 14 computers with Ancestry & other genealogy web sites available & just waiting for us to visit 3. Over 8,000 genealogy books in the book room (including Roger Minert's German genealogy books that we purchased at our conference last spring that finally made it out of cataloging.) 4. Marriage microfilm from about 20 Nebraska counties--mostly through about 1900, but much later for Douglas & Sarpy counties. 5. Wide selection of historical Omaha newspapers on microfilm. 6 Genealogy newsletters from over 125 genealogy societies around the country available to explore for your family. 7. Complete set of Germans to America & several other ethnic immigration book sets 8. Complete set of Omaha City directories, (and several other cities on microfilm) 9. Obit clipping file from 1977 through Jun of 2008 10. Naturalization index for Nebraska and some 60+ IA counties (alphabetical) 11. Interment data bases on several Douglas county cemeteries 12. Church records from several Omaha historic Churches on microfilm 13. Historic clipping file on Omaha history & people (these are only accessibly by asking the librarians) 14. GO-PAF people available to answer genealogy computer questions 15. GOGS volunteers available to try help solve genealogy problems Coffee & cookies as a snack will be available. There will also be a donation jar to help pay the guard's salary (one of the requirements to have the lock-in.) If we get more than is needed for the guard that night, we'll buy more materials so that we all find more ancestors. If we don't get enough to cover, the Greater Omaha Genealogy Society will pay the cost. For those who do not live in Omaha Public Library's area and so don't have a card (and don't have a Council Bluffs or Lincoln Library card), come early and get a one day guest card for $2. This will allow you to use the computers, plus give you five free copies (you can put more on your card if you think you're going to make more copies.) Come early and have more time to look at things. Check out the card catalog at _www.omahapubliclibrary.org_ (http://www.omahapubliclibrary.org) to see some of the things that you might want to use when you come. Hope you can come join us. Karen PS: Because of budget difficulties, we can't promise at this point whether the library will be open on Saturday or not. We'll let you know as time goes on.
Hi My question is this - What would be the best way to go about verifying the relationship between 2-3 people when all I have are the birth/death dates for these persons? Here's what I know - My great grandmother, Dora Paulsen Hahlbeck (Feb 1863-Jun 1944), is buried at Scribner Cemetery, Dodge County. She is buried in the Dieckmann family plot. The other names in this plot are: C. Jacob Dieckmann Dec 1830-Aug 1897 M Dorothea Paulsen Dieckmann Jul 1830-Mar 1913 Hans D Paulsen May 1794-Aug 1885 HM Nicolas Dieckmann Feb 1860-Nov 1913 Anna Swoboda Dieckmann Jun 1859-Mar 1913 Given these dates - I am guessing that M Dorothea would be Dora's Aunt and that Hans Paulsen would be her grandfather. I have been told that my hunch is correct. How would I go about verifying that my guess is correct? Much thanks in advance, Jodi Pleins researching Hahlbeck, Paulsen, Ihde, Pueppke in Dodge and surrounding counties.
Hello Everyone, I have just update my Blogs where you can find obituaries that are listing in Cass County, Nebraska, ECHO Newspaper from January 24, 1944 to 1946. The South Omaha Sun Newspaper from December 27, 1951 to August 31, 1983. Must more from World-Herald and Omaha Bee and Daily News from 1893 to 1927. http://italianmomomaha.blogspot.com/ Nancy

I found a relative, Cuthbert Paul Randall, in the wonderful transcription of Nebraska Who's Who. Cuthbert was born in Minnesota in 1901, married Jennella Loye and, in 1940 was a lawyer in Dodge County with three children: Richard, Peter and Jennell. I believe he died in Minnesota in 1962. Can anyone help with the children? Birthdates, marriages, anything! Perhaps an obit for Cuthbert? TIA Nicki _________________________________________________________________ NEW mobile Hotmail. Just wanted to let people know that I just added over 1,000 birth listings to our G.O.G.S. web site: _www.OmahaBirths.wordpress.com_ (http://www.OmahaBirths.wordpress.com) These are mostly births listed in the paper which means that they are not the actual birth date (which isn't given in the paper), but may help one track a family to know if you've got all of the children, or possibly narrow down the search for one that's known to be missing. There are a few from the early Omaha & South Omaha birth registers, and there will be more. These records were prior to the State of Nebraska making it mandatatory to register births, so they won't be complete although there's a lot of births on the two films. While I'm sending this to more than just Douglas county, it's important to note that people lived in many places and had births reported in the Omaha paper because they may have been born here for whatever reason. IOWA births I am also including Council Bluffs births when listed in our Omaha papers. These births are often listed as having parents from many outlying communities, so pass the word to friends in other area towns to check if they're looking for births. There's births recorded with parents listed as having their home in places like Glenwood & Missouri Valley. There is a differentiation there as the entry will say: Council Bluffs so that people will know it is a listing for CB, rather than Douglas county. OFFUTT births If they're listed in the paper, I'm including them also, even though they're technically in Sarpy county. Most AF folks that I've known talk about being stationed at Omaha because people know where Omaha is and draw a blank at the Bellevue name when they get away from the local area. Just as with the Council Bluffs births, if the paper says they were born at Offutt AFB, my entry will indicate that. Hope everybody finds lots of connections. (Hey, if you do, let me know.) And just for the record, this site hasn't been going for very long, but with over 5,000 births gathered as we gather obits, it's not doing too badly. It's important to remember we are a new site, and gathering births is NOT the main focus (we collect births as we collect obits for those in the paper.) Not everybody gave permission to print a birth announcement, just as not everyone had an obit. So visit and have fun with what you find.
