Ne Obituaries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ne/CherryObits?read=30 Surname: Brinda, Boyd, Weihe, Beel ------------------------- Ellenor M. Boyd was born to Stephen and Harriet Frampton Boyd August 3, 1892, in Lucerne, Kansas. She died March 20, 1974, age 81, at the Cherry County Hospital. Ellenor studied normal training during high school at Manhattan, Kansas and taught school in Wyoming where her mother and brother filed homesteads. There she met John Brinda, who was a cowboy for the 7V Ranch. John was inducted into the Army in September 1917 and the couple were married at Camp Funsten, Manhattan, Kansas, May 20, 1918, just hours before he left for overseas. In 1922 they bought a farm in Todd County, South Dakota, where they raised their family and spent their lives. Ellenor was a pioneer woman, self-sufficient and concerned with her fellow man. On March 23, 1925, a prairie fire threatened their home while her husband was away freighting hogs to Valentine. Ellenor took her two children and a nephew to the bare potato patch, dug a depression for them, left bottles of water with the warning not to leave and covered them with blankets. She fought fire through the night and saved the buildings. During World War II she joined the Ground Observers Corp and logged more than 5,000 hours. She was past president and a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of the Help One Another Extension Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, her brothers Will and James and sister Helen. She is survived by their four children, James (Cheeri) Brinda, Berkeley, Calif.; Dorothy (Leo) Weihe, Marianne (Gerald) Beel, and Robert (Carolyn), all of Valentine, 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services were conducted March 23, 1974 at Watts Funeral Home by Rev. Lee Hicks. Burial was at Mount Hope, Valentine.
