His boyhood and early life was spent in Valentine and on his father's ranches in Cherry County. His father, James H. Quigley, was born in San Antonio, Texas, and accompanied several longhorn cattle drives to Nebraska until he settled in the Valentine area in 1882 where he engaged in ranching. His mother, Mary M. Quigley came from eastern Iowa as a schoolteacher, and originally taught at Bordeaux near Chadron. James and Mary were married in 1886 and had five children: James Cloyd, Margarete Clair, Gertrude, Ruth and William Bryan. Bryan died November 14, 1995 at Valentine at the age of 96. As a boy he learned to hunt, trap and fish and during high school he participated in football, boxing and basketball. Bryan left high school in 1917 to enlist in the U.S. Army to serve on the front lines in France during battles at Marne, Cherume Dames and Muse Argonne. From the latter he received the French Croix de Guerre for his wounds and bravery. After the war, Bryan was one of the carter members of the American Legion Leo Brinda Post and remained a member during his lifetime. He advocated a prepared and strong military for America and was a tireless supporter of military veterans and their causes. Upon return from France he enrolled at the University of Nebraska and received his law degree in 1923. He practiced in New York City seven years and then spent the rest of his career in Valentine until he retired at age 85. He was Cherry County Attorney 1935-1955. He was Red Cross chairman 15 years including WW II period, served as president of the Valentine Production Credit Association and a longime AkSarBen Ambassador. Bryan and Bertha G. Weeth were married in 1937. Their sons, James H. and Bill, are practicing attorneys in Valentine. Bertha died in 1971. In 1973 Bryan married Betty R. Fischer of Valentine and they enjoyed sailboating in the Pacific Northwest and Gulf of Mexico. Bryan was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings and his first wife. He is survived by his wife Betty, sons Jim (Dorothy) and Bill (Ann); stepchildren Ruth (Robert) Tennies, and Mark (Cheryl) Fischer; five grandchildren; a niece, Mary Quigley Harrison and her children and a nephew, Gilbert (Patricia) Phelps and their children. Funeral services were held Nov. 17, 1995, at the Presbyterian Church with Revs. Steve and Carolyn Breazier and Fr. Carl Ferris officiating. Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Valentine, Nebr.
