Why would that surprise us now? I will check this out on the Hardwick board. We are working on Aunt Julia as I have family who remember her. It appears her correct married name was Stanford. She moved to Farmersville, Texas. She had at least one child. A son who was described as crippled in some way, but a hard working boy. It is a theory that Aunt Julia may have married again and the name would be Curtis. Just a theory at this time. We have a picture of Aunt Julia with a brother (both elderly at that time). Brother is not MJ Powers in the picture.

She meant to say that George Hardwick was married to Elizabeth Powers (not Perkins), who is daughter to Sarah Jane Conaway Powers and Gardner Powers. Now we are working on whatever the connection might be to the Marion Johnson name given to John Powers. My father-in-law was Clarence Sandford Powers.

We have passed the name Jane as a middle name through three generations.A daughter of Henry M. Powers had info which indicated the name of Lydia Remison being married to Gardner Powers from 1855 to 1858. Aunt Julia's married name seems to be Stanford. My sister in Texas has info indicating a possible later marriage with the name Curtis. Aunt Julia supposedly died in Farmersville,Texas. She had at least one son crippled in some manner. I think we've hit the jackpot. The Parents of John and Julia are Gardner Powers and Sarah Jane Conaway who were married in 1832 in Indiana. Sarah and Gardner divorced and he remarried in 1868. In 1870 in Cass Co. Ne. Sarah was murdered by a Gallant Rakes. We've tried figuring out a Sandford connection too and have so far been unable. Julia is listed as M. Julia on the Cass County Ne.1860 census. At the trial a witness by the name M.J.Powers testifies. I have not read the news article but will see it tomorrow. My daughter had a reply from someone earlier from California and now I think we are on the right track. My daughter thinks she has some info and photos of M.J. and bro Henry. We have a lot of info. Thanks for your reply. You can email me direct. You and my husband are related.

My Great Grandfather went by the name John Powers. He was born in Iowa on August 25,1854. According to family he passed through Arkansas on his way to Texas with other Power relatives.I can only determine that he returned to Arkansas with his first wife Emmeo Audie Woods after 1880. He had two sons, Marion Sanford Powers and Henry M. Powers. His first wife died of food poisoning ( ate something prepared or stored in a copper pot) in 1888. In 1898 John Powers remarries Laura Melvinia Spears and they have one child, a daughter Mellie Jane Powers. This was my Grandmother. John Powers' sister went to live in Texas and I am still trying to track her down. I highly suspect a connection with Gardner Powers. The family is perplexing at times! John powers is also on record stating his parents were from Indiana. Can anyone shed any light on this man or Julia. Her married name may have been Stanfo! rd? Thanks so much, Phyllis Work
